J SECTION 2-PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 1975 Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 9, 1925) Bueh's hotel and summer resort in this city will re-open next Saturday morning under the management of L.R. Zimmer and Edward Cook, two young men who recently came toithis city from Palatine. In a letter to the Plaindealer in which he renews his sub scription to the Plaindealer, W.L. Howell, who has just taken over the management of the LaPorte, Ind., country club is getting the big club house and grounds ready for the season's opening. The LaPorte club is one of the largest and most substantial in that section of Indiana. Owing to the prevalence of measles the Lincoln school, three miles east of this city, is closed down for two weeks. The teacher is Miss Carolyn M. Steffes. Mrs. Martha Georgiana Clemmens, for more than three quarters of a century an esteemed ̂ resident of this community, passed away at her home at the age of 76 years, May 4. j A new two story addition is ' being l^uilt to the McHenry House. IThe lower floor will be used for kitchen and work rooms while the upper floor will give the proprietor a few more bedrooms. The McHenry Community club which recently offered a prize for the two best slogans to be adopted for welcome signs to be erected at the entrances to our city by that body, an nounces the winners. First members of Mr. Stringer's English class. Their slogans for the two sides of the sign read "McHenry a friendly city, let us prove it." On the reverse side on leaving the city "McHenry Appreciates Your Call." The second prize went to Byron Hitchens, a student. His slogan "McHenry Welcomes You, Stay Awhile." The goodby slogan was "McHenry Thanks You, Hurry Back." FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 9, 1935) Mrs. Henry Foss arrived in McHenry last Thursday af ternoon after a hurried trip by airplane from New York in ^nsyHQp^Q a message telling her £ the critical illness of her mother, Mrs. J.F. C'laxton. Mrs. Lillian Stoffel of Washington, D.C., arrived on Wednesday of last week to spend the remainder of the month in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Stoffel. This is the first return visit Miss Stoffel has made her parents since she left McHenry in November 1933. Miss Stoffel is employed in the nation's treasury department at Washington, obtaining the position by passing a civil service examination which she took in 1932. Her sister, Martha, is employed in the same building but in another division and has been there since the war, going in 1918. Eugene Sayler who plays trumpet in the DeKalb college band will make a trip with the band to Benton Harbor, Mich., where they will take part in the parade at the crowning of the cherry blossom queen of Michigan. Twin boys were born to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Passfield, near Yolo Wednesday morning. Miss Eva Jarvis of Waukegan and Mr. Nicholas Miller of Johnsburg were united in marriage by Fr. Voet at St. Mary's parsonage at Woodstock May 4. Mr. and Mrs T.H. Speaker of Richmond, parents of Mrs. Leslie Olson of this city, ob served their golden wedding anniversary at Richmond Sunday. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 18, 1950) The Central Certified Food „ Store located on the corner of Green and Elm street where the National Tea store and Central Market formerly did business opened for business last weekend. The "Central" is a carry over of a name under which the Pries family has been doing business locally for the past thirty-five years. William Pries, Jr., is respon sible for the new store locating here. The children also made a tour of the local post office and went on to other places of interest in this area. Mrs. Arthur Hoppe was hostess to members of the past matrons' club of the Order of Eastern Star on Monday af- • ternoon, officers were elected and a lunch was served after the business meeting. All persons in the community are invited to exhibit violet plants on May 24 at a showing to be sponsored by the Crystal Lake African Violet society ii* the First Methodist church. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 13, 1965) Lillian H. Jones of Wonder Lake died May 10 at Memorial hospital, Woodstock, where she had been a patient for three weeks. Mrs. Jones, 64, had lived at Wonder lake for about twenty-five years. Two young McHenry students at Marian Central high school had the honor of holding the titles of king and queen of the annual prom. They were Jane Weber, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Richard Weber, and Dennis Hester, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hester. At the high school sports banquet "Mac" McCracken, athletic director presented a plaque to Joe Schmitt who is retiring after forty years of service ta the school. One of the greatest movies ever filmed in India "Jhnak, Jhnak, Pawal Banje" (rough translation, Twinkling feet) will be shown at the McHenry Theatre May 19 as a benefit for t h e A m e r i c a n - I n d i a - Dispensary hospital project in the village of Ammathi, South India. Dr. R&thma Aiwa, staff physician at McHenry hospital who will go to India to assume director of the hospital when it is completed next year, has arranged for the showing of the movie. Junior high students taking part in the state solo and en semble contest on May 1 at Lockport West high school returned home with eleven Color Motion Picture To Be Shown At Church A young Apache pits his wiles against white hoodlums who live just off the reservation in "Apache Fire", a dramatic color motion picture to be shown at the Alliance Bible church. 3813 W. John street, superior ratings and eight excellent ratings. They were in competition with thirty schools. McHenry, May 4 at 7 and 8:30 p.m. The film story was adapted from the experiences of an Apache evangelist who appears briefly in one of the sequences. Also included is the famous musical group known as the Claus Indian family.
