"Same old story," said the man himself-intimating a Cub victory and the Sox loss. Not until the next morning did we learn the truth about a Sox victory. We may ask him again, but won't believe a word. People ask, "Do you plan to travel? Sure do. Drove all the way to Lake Geneva Sunday. That's a long trip compared to driving up one side of the Fox River, thrdugh Johnsburg, then head for home on the other side of the river. Stopped to see the Trade Fair sponsored by the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce. It was a good show. Such promotions can do much toward promoting McHenry as a trading center. Have always contended that the Chamber of Commerce is not a glamorous organization, but it is one of the most im portant in our community. WANTA UMP? - The Pig Tail League needs umpires. Call Bill Sheehan 385- 1542 or Jerry Dowe 385-7674. Our government spent 150 billion dollars on the Vietnam war and have set aside only 260 thousand on a love research project. Oh, we have some dillies of programs on the list. And we wonder why taxes are so high. Spent an enjoyable evening at the World War I Vets annual dinner Thursday night. Hear how they are fighting to get financial aid for War Vets. Maybe some of that big money they are tossing around in Washington should be used for this cause. Before our Sox started a winning streak, we were recording a few mistakes to send to Manager Tanner. For instance. Brian Downing, a star of the future, had his eyes on the runner instead of the ball that came into the plate on a perfect one-hopper. The runner was a dead duck if Downing had followed rule No. 1 -- keep your eye on the ball. Oh, there are a lot of pointers we could give Tanner if he didn't take the attitude "Don't call me. I'll call you." We don't believe the Cubs are the same team they had in spring training. Like 01' Man River, they just keep rolling along. Missed the Lawrence Welk show to go to the McHenry Choral Club program under the outstanding direction of our "Brenda." This group is full of talent. Wouldn't dare mention one without going down the line. Of course, we can make an exception and mention Otto Pyritz and his sing-a-long during intermission. It was a happy crowd that cheered Otto when he came through the curtains to sart the fun with "Roll Out The Barrel." The Old Boy is still a winner. Waniois Defeat North Chicago 7-6 By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry high Warriors defeated North Chicago Saturday morning at Mc- Cracken field 7 to 6 in the first game of a double header. The second game was postponed until Monday due to rain. Ron Himpelmann, in relief of Dave Wickenkamp, was the winning pitcher. Wickenkamp pitched six innings and struck out 13 Warhawk batters. Tommy Ludwig was the batting star as he picked up 3 hits for the day. Rta. 173 PH: 815-678-2631 Racing Rich Wondra of Camp- bellsport, Wis., made it two in a row as he piloted his No. 92 through a field of 18 super modified racing machines to win the feature race Saturday night on the third-mile oval at Wilmot, Wis. And taking the second spot for the second week running was Gene Erdman of Hartland, Wis. Erdman took the lead early and held on for 10 laps but Wondra skillfully maneuvered through traffic and then rode right on Erdman's tail, making his bid for the lead when Erd man began experiencing dif ficulty holding the car close to the rail on the turns. Midway through the 25-lap race, Tom Sexton of Crystal Lake and Bill Klein of Burlington, Wis., both spun out going into the first turn but managed to get their cars out of the way of the onrushing pack without being hit. In the 15-lap semi-feature for sportsman cars, George Todd of Milwaukee spun out on the back straightaway but also managed to get out of the way of traffic. The sportsman feature race again proved to be a crowd pleaser as brothers Duke and Sid Norton, visiting driver George Scheffler, Don Collins, Randy Storm and Chuck Ostergaard all fought it out in a 15-lap race which saw the lead change eight times. While Collins and Sid Norton of McHenry battled each other back in the pack, Duke took advantage of his mid-field starting position to move up rapidly. Then, after riding the tail of Everett Pitch for several laps, he got right on Fitch's DIVING BACK . . . Warrior Dale Urbanski beats the pick-off attempt of Marian's pitcher Sleconich. Thursday the Warriors enter the District Tournament which will be held at McCracken Field. The tourney games will be played on May 8, 10 and 12. McHenry meets Richmond-Burton on Thursday, May 8. Chicago 0 0 0 0 0 4 2 6- 5-7 By Dick Rabbitt For the second year in a row, Coach Wally Scott's McHenry high track team brought back the big trophy from Woodstock as they successfully defended their relays title. They scored 101 points to easily out distance Palatine who had 68 for the runnerup spot. Rockford Jefferson placed third with 56 points followed by Woodstock with 41 and Dundee trailed the field with 33. bumper and began jostling him in the turns. Fitch finally gave way and Norton then went after last week's feature winner,-George Scheffler, who drives a well- worn but extremely fast 1957 Chevrolet. Once again, the leading four cars in the sportsman feature were mere feet apart as they crossed the finish for the checkered flag, with Norton and Storm finishing one and two. In the sportsman semi- feature, Jeff Hutchinson had an easy time of it, lapping a number of slower cars and beating Danny Brown of McHenry to the finish by a quarter of a lap. Brown did give him a run for his money earlier in the race before losing ground when he drifted wide in turn four. The 15-lap super modified semi-feature also proved a runaway for Bill Kojis, who drives a beautifully prepared car. Although the track was in better shape this week, drivers said the new clay in the turns is still causing problems. Track officials blamed heavy rains during the week for preventing work on the running surface until Friday. Even without the services of senior sprinter Ev Klapperich, the Warriors displayed plenty of power and depth. John Mclnerney won both the mile and 2 mile runs, running the mile in his best time ever a neat 4:29.9. Brian Nuss was the only other Warrior who had double victories as he won the 330 low hurdles and long jump. Brett Decker heaved the discus 142' to pick up a first place medal, and George Hansen vaulted 13'8" for another first place. McHenry won 3 relays, winning the varsity 440, and the frosh-soph came back to win both the 440 and 880 relays. On Saturday the Warriors travel to Libertyville for the North Suburban Conference meet. EARL R.WALSH GOOD SPORTS - Avid sports fans for as long as they can remember, City Clerk Earl R. Walsh, left, and City Treasurer Thomas F. Bolger were remembered for this interest in an amusing way on the occasion of their retirement from office last week. Each received a large framed picture of himself as a THOMAS F. BOLGER baseball player. A White Sox player with shoulder length hair was depicted with a bat on his shoulder and Walsh's face superimposed on the picture. Bolger's face was shown on a baseball player in a Shamrock uniform. Bolger managed the team some years ago.
