Their next home game is against North Chicago Wednesday, May 14 (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) BANK NOTES BY DONALD DALEY PRESIDENT FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF McHENRY 'Not Worth a Continental" With the advent of the War of Independence, there was an immediate mon etary crisis; the colonies were without mepns to fi - nance army payments and supplies. There was no ce ntral taxing power, no real source of revenue. The Continental Congress chose the only a venue open; on May 10,1775 it author ized the first issue of "Continental Currency". These paper notes stated that the bearer was entit led to Spanish milled do llars or value thereof in gold or silver. Circulation commenced in 1776 with an inital issure of $2,000,000. There were forty issues in all for a total of $191, 552,380. For the first few years this currency worked eff ectively but by 1780, in spite of a decree that made it treasonable to refuse or discourage its' circulation, the Continental Currency had decreased in value to where one Spanish milled dollar could buy, 300 to 500 Continental dollars. Finan cially, the American "cause" was getting more desparate by the day . . . Army pay was constantly in arrears and supplies were meger. It is on re cord that when American spies were to be sent on an important mission, George Washington himself had to "pass the hat" in order to raise even the small amount of silver they needed to operate "behind the lines". By 1781 the "Continentals" had run their course; it took 250 of them to buy a bushel of wheat, a suit of cloth ing took 3,000. An order to stop issuance came in September. Such circumst ances popularized the say ing "Not worth a Contin ental" to describe anything that was virtually worth less. So distressing was this experience, 80 years were to pass before the United States Federal govern ment would again get in volved in the issuance of paper money. The entire cost (in gold) of the Re volutionary War was about $104,000,000. Regardless of how drastically this Continental currency had depreciated, it did not de preciate all at once and it did make it possible to conduct the war. The de preciation has to be consid ered modest compared to some later European in flations. Soph Tennis Under cloudy skies and in cold winds Remorseful Golf turned out to be just that for the ladies at McHenry C.C. on Tuesday, the 6th of May. Monday night's rain left the course a little damp in spots and a bit ploddish for those who walked the 18. In spite of the adverse conditions the more hardy heroines stuck to it and turned in fairly respectable scores. Flow O'Connell turned in a net 82, followed by Marilyn Reihansperger with a net 84, while Carol Cooney and Liz Nolan tied for low putts with 32 each. Next week opens the ABC Two 'Week Team Event and on the 27th of the month there will be a Tennessee Dog Fight. For those who haven't already entered these events there are sign-up sheets in the Women's Lounge. Happy golfing to all - and, pray for sunny skies! Of course, this popular couple has a host of friends in these parts besides the Cubs. Anyhow, this weather is too cold for baseball. The little woman got us out in the back yard to help with a project and we had to get inside because our hands were freezing. That's our story and we are sticking to it.
