Woodstock, Illinois Hospital Technicians Discuss Special Topics Every third Tuesday the fifteen technicians in the laboratory department of Memorial v Hospital for McHenry County meet, each bringing a special topic per taining to department work he will discuss. These meetings, involving improved skills, are representative of the con tinuing in-service training that is an integral part of the commitment by the 400 people who work at the county-wide hospital in Woodstock. As part of the National Hospital week participation, Memorial Hospital for McHenry County employees are re-dedicating their efforts to improved patient care, and they are backing that com mitment by taking part in the varios training projects available, say Bert Hanson, executive director. Members of the nursing staff, the largest department at the hospital, attend refresher courses and take part in seminars. Dr. Frank Elmudesi, head of the laboratory department, explains the monthly depart mental meetings provide a chance to involve the specialists in the work of the department by asking them to study a specific topic for presentation and discussion. "We also go over our relationship with other departments, and talk about day-to-day responsibilities that come up, all in the interest of •improved patient care," he Vlaborates. "Coordination with other departments is vital to the smooth flow of data gathered in our laboratory, for a large percentage of the patients depend on the work of this department for information which helps a doctor diagnose how to proceed." Training is furthered by the department's participation in a special program where the laboratory does research on material and equipment supplied through the Scientific Products company. "We compare what is sup plied us with what we normally use and present a report. We receive a $1,000 grant which we earmark for educational meetings of our department personnel. Memorial hospital usually matches those funds." Dr. Elmudesi says the department also belongs to the College of American Pathologists program and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists programs which are important for quality control. Personnel in this department must have a wide range of knowledge and expertise. A look at what its work covers reflects this requirement: Hematology, chemistry, blood banking, microbiology, tissue pathology, cytology, serology, and special chemistry. Dr. Elmudesi, department director since 1972, says acquisition of modern equip ment over the past couple of years has increased depart mental efficiency and in creased the demand for skilled personnel who are kept up-to- date on techniques and ser vices. Among equipment added within the past year are a fluorescent microscope, modern spectrophotometer, Model S automated hematology equipment, Helena scanner for probing and for protein and lipo-protein and hemoglobin electrophoresis, and an SMA 12 Junior used in blood analysis. "We've tried to show during this National Hospital Week period how our employees take their responsibilities con scientiously and whole heartedly participate in any school, course, seminar or staff meeting that will improve their ability to serve the public," says Hanson. "In their dedication, they exemplify the devotion of thousands of people who work at the 7,000 hospitals in the United States, a devotion summarized in this year's National Hospital week theme: 'A Constant Concern for a Healthy Community.' " School Accreditation Granted Marian High Announcement has been made that Marian Central Catholic high school has been granted full accreditation by the North Central association for the 1974-75 school year. The school has been a member of the North Central association since 1973. Administrators and teachers feel this should be a matter of quiet satisfaction to the students and the parents of the school, since accreditation gives assurance that the school meets those minimal yet rigorous pre-conditions for effective education established by the association. Through this voluntary membership in the NCA, the school and the people in this district have committed themselves to the pursuit of quality in education. North Central association accreditation and evaluation offer both a framework and an effective tool to help schools clarify their goals, recognize their strengths and limitations, and implement processes and programs to help meet the needs of today's students. Accreditation by the North Central association assures that the school is meeting the minimal conditions for ef fectiveness. By setting stan dards for basic operations of the school and by requiring a comprehensive self-study once every seven years, the NCA stimulates the school towards continuous improvement. The external team is composed of teachers, administrators, university personnel, and state department of education representatives. The year the school spends on an evaluation enables every teacher to participate in the development of a comprehensive plan for school improvement. Army ROTC Scholarship To Be Announced Up to 300 Army ROTC four- year scholarships will be awarded to selected high school seniors through an early scholarship selection cycle. The application period for the early cycle began April 1 and is open until Aug. 31. Winners will be announced Oct. 15. This gives recipients of the award a chance to complete college plans shortly after beginning their senior year of high school. Applicants not selected in the early cycle will have a second chance. Their applications will be reconsidered during the regular four-year selection cycle which closes Dec. 1. Announcement of these win ners will be made in April, 1976. Army four-year scholarships may be used at any of the 287 colleges and universities which will host the Army ROTC program in school year 1975-76. School admission requirements are the responsibility of those selected. * Applications may be obtained by writing to Army ROTC, P.O. Box 12703, Philadelphia, PA. 19134.
