BOY SCOUT ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head...does not quite describe the conditions that Cub packs, Scout troops, and Explorers posts camped under during a recent weekend. The annual U.S. Grant Pilgrimage, held in Galena, will always be in the cambers' memory. There was a total of about 10,000 Scouts who came to this old mining town this year, and the Webelos (Pack 452), Scouts (Troop 128), and the Explorers (Post 128) of Pistakee Terrace, Pistakee Highlands,, and Fox Lake were part of that count. Let's go back to Friday evening around 6:30 p.m. as the last minute gear loading was done and cheerful goodbyes were called out. One of the mothers was heard to tell how she put pieces of paper in every pocket of her newly Webelo son with his name and address written on them. This was his first campout. The long ride at night was most thrilling as they drove closer to their destination. The curves and hills brought on a good case of hiccups to one of the two den mothers who went along. On to the campsite, Wooded Wonderland, to see a most welcomed campfire, and tents that were already set up by a group of Scouts who went earlier. It was said a tent named the Hilton (that was for the two Den Mothers and their daughters) was in direct line of a route for some forty horses to take every night. Of course, what's a campout without a few jokes? Those tents were sure warm on that moonlite night, and that's why some slept with their clothes on in their sleeping bags. Before bedding down there were the necessary walks to the non-convenient and non-luxurious rest rooms. Breakfast on Saturday morning was delicious, and the hike up the cliffs behind the campsite at 9:30 a.m. was very popular with all there. On to Galena in time for the lunch hour, for which the Scouters built up an appetite by walking from one end of town to the other. The great Stockade was toured by some and registration was done at the famed DeSota House hotel. The parade consisting of Scouters and bands was long but im­ pressive too. Toasted marshmallows were a must around the campfire Saturday night while threatening dark clouds covered up the stars. "And the rains came' The only nice way to describe the campsite Sunday morning is to say gooooy. An Explorer was overheard saying in a laughing way there was a small river flowing through the camp area. There was much scurrying around for gear packing, the taking down of tents and loading of cars. The soaked Scouters had to wait in the 2 foot rutted road of mud for hours. Tractors driven by nearby farmers came to their rescue by towing the cars out, one by one. To help matters more, one of the Webelo leader's car would not start. Once out of this Wooded Wonderland, they proceeded to a service station for repairs, and on to a most welcomed restaurant. That breakfast at noon was the best breakfast anyone had. With full tummies, everyone now could be homeward bound at last, singing "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head"....* Reporter CUB PACK 351 Cub Scout Pack 351 attended the Cub Scout camporee at Kunde Woods in Marengo from 1 to 7 p.m., April 19. Thirty-one boys of the 40 boys pack at­ tended. Theme of the camporee was America's Bicentennial and Paul Revere's historical 18- mile ride. Activities consisted of a two and one-half mile nature hike on which the packs were to identify specific trees, evidence of man and animal, accuracy contests, horseshoe pitching and a coloring contest. Pack 351 won first prize for the nature hike, and second prize in horseshoe pitching was won for the, pack by Tony Wember.
