HELPING PAWS (815-459-2641) By Nancy Hanson ^ Taking your pet along on vacation doesn't have to be a harrowing experience for you or your pet. A little forethought goes a long way in this en deavor. Only travel with your pet if he is in good health. Check ahead to find out which motels will welcome pets. If you are traveling with a cat, have his nails cut. If your pet is a dog, always have a leash on him, before any car doors are -opened. Animals suffer from nerves on car trips? «nd the unexpected should always be considered. Limit your pet's intake of food and water. Stop, oc casionally, and let your pet stretch his legs a little. Never leave an animal alone, in a parked car with all the windows closed. After you arrive at your destination, still feed your pet smaller amounts of food and water at first, until you are sure he is settled down after his trip. It is a good idea to see your veterinarian before your trip, to be sure of your dog's good health and to ask him any questions about your pet and your pet's well being on the trip. Held annually, this event has long served as the starting signal for community efforts to repair, repaint and make other improvements to the nation's approximately 25 million rural and suburban curbline-type mailboxes, 7937 of which are served by the McHenry post office. Posmasters and civic groups, the press and municipal governments in many com munities around the country conduct campaigns in the Spring to "Spruce Up" the mail receptacles often damaged by severe winter weather. "Because more Americans receive their mail today on rural routes than ever before, Mailbox Improvement week is more important than when first observed generations ago in rural areas and small com munities," Postmaster Smith said. Approximately 12,400,000 families are served by about 31,000 rural mail routes, 5,962 of which are served by McHenry. Rural delivery service is now available to all qualified customers living a quarter- mile or more from first, second and third class post offices without city delivery. In the past, customers had to live a half-mile or more from the post office or erect an approved mailbox on the line of travel of the rural carrier in order to receive rural delivery; Growth irf the nation's suburbs has increased the numbers of curbline mailboxes served by motorized city delivery carriers/1975 of which are served by McHenry. An estimated 36 million customers now receive their mail in such boxes. Rural mail service began way back in 1896. In those days many make-shift receptacles were used as mailboxes. One favorite was a tin can nailed to a tree. Today, manufacturers provide a variety of modern mailbox designs for use with PAGE 5 - PLAINDEALkK-h Kilia* , mai M, *»«.» decorative posts in cooperation with the postal service. "Customers who prefer other designs than the traditional mailbox may check with me for a list of manufacturers making approved optional designs, "Postmaster Smith said. "I am also authorized to approve customer-made mailboxes when they comply with postal regulations." All postal personnel directly involved in suburban and rural deliveries will cooperate with postal customers in making certain their mailboxes comply with regulations on safety and MORE TIME Man: "Look here.
