Ob The Sklelkies .With Dick Rabbitt ?lc* school year is gradually winding down to the end. Only a doubleheader with Libertyville next week remains on the athletic calendar. With over 300 various athletic events scheduled this past see ^ has indeed been a very busy year at McHenry High School. Coach Bill Day's football squad wound up with a 6 and 3 record and 21 pts. separated them from a unbeaten season. Coach Bill Hutchinson's harriers had a 15 and 1 record and the sophs went undefeated with 16 and 0 Chuck Cuda's golfers had a fine record, and look to be contenders this fall. Coach Marty Sobczak's grapplers showed great improvement during the season. Ken Scanlin at 105 lbs. qualified for the state finals, and had a very outstanding season. Ken Ludwig's Warriors were the talk of the community.. Losing to Zion Benton 63 to 62 in the opening conference game, the Warriors went undefeated the rest of the way. Zion did likewise and wound up winning the North Suburban with a 13 and 0 record. The Warriors won the Belvidere District, and lost a heartbreaker to Harlem in the Rockford Sectional. Mike Shanahan's small swimming squad competed against some of the best in the area, and held their own in very tough competition. Gary Gray's tennis squad showed great improvement and wound up with a 12 and 6 record. Some of his younger lads are going to be tough to beat in the future. Coach Wally Scott's thinclads had a 12 and 1 dual record, matched by the frosh-soph squad. They placed second in the McHenry Relays, won the County, and picked up seventh in the Rockford District. John Mclnerney and George Hansen both qualified for the state finals in Charleston. KenSwanson's baseball teamreally surprised everyone At present they won a 18 and 7 record with 2 j*ames~ with Libertyville still on tap. Yes indeed, it has been a great year at McHenry High School. The entire athletic program is on the way up. The community and Warrior fans, have a right to be proud of their "Warrior teams". None of this would have been possible if it were not the work of Bill Blankenhorn the Athletic Director. On behalf of all the Warrior coaches I would like to thank Bill for a job "well done". He is no doubt the hardest working A.D. in the North Suburban. Very rarely has he failed to at least put in an appearance at a home athletic event. The scheduling of games, hiring of officials, and getting bus transportation are only a few of his many tasks. He is "johnny on the spot" and will go out of his way to give assistance to those who are in need of it. At times he is not appreciated. It is hard to keep twenty seven coaches all at one time or another happy. There are differences of opinion, but in the end the coaches respect him, because they know they will get a fair shake from him. I guess I can best sum it all up by just saying "Thanks Bill". In closing I want to say I hope you fans enjoyed this column as much as I did putting it together. If the good Lord is willing, it will be back next season. Have a happy summer. r McHenry Area ! • 12-Inch Softball i By Pat Wirtz MAY 21 GAMES Jerry's Phillip's 66 won a long 12 inning contest versus the S.P.A. by a score of 12 to 8.
