JUNE 4. 1975 Twice Told Tales TWICE TOLD TALES FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 4, 1925) Through the cooperation of three classes of the McHenry community high school a new baby grand piano was placed in the high school auditorium recently. The senior class of this year, the senior class of next year and the graduates of 1922 have cooperated to bring this piano to our school. The class two years ago, 1923, gave two beautiful pictures. These now hang in the new study hall. Ths class of last year, 1924, gave one of the beautiful curtains on the new stage. John A. Thennis, local agent for the Valvoline Oil Co., is out this year to break all previous records as to the amount of oil sold in any one year since the establishment of the tanks and agency by concern in this city. On June 1,1924, the local agents records show that eighteen carloads of oil had been unloaded for the first five months. One June 1 of this year twenty-three carloads had been unloaded. E. J. Fellows, West McHenry, three and one half miles southwest of town is offering his 260 acre farm for $200 an acre, including seven head of good horses, tractor and all farm tools and equip- THE GREAT KIMBIES ment; about 800 bushels of oats, 400 bushels of corn, 300 bushels of barley, 45 tons of hay; also the growing crops, consisting of 110 acres of corn, 27 acres of oat, 14 acres of barley, 10 acres of clover, 10 acres of alfalfa. The offier is good until July l. E.S. Brink a former McHenry resident and who for a number of years was the local agent for the Standard Oil Co., has returned to this city where he has rented the service station owned by M L. Worts and located west of the railroad tracks on the McHenry- Woodstock road. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 6, 1935) A pretty June wedding was solemnized at St. John's church, Johnsburg, June 5, when Miss Anita Schaefer of Johnsburg and Mr. Bernard Freund of Johnsburg were united in marriage with Fr. A.J. Vollman officiating at the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. James Beavis . were in an automobile accident awhen they were driving on Buckley road. Their car skidded on the wet brick pavement and overturned, wrecking the car and injuring both Mr. and Mrs. Beavis. In the safety essay contest sponsored by John J. Stilling following his free movie, the first prize was won by Mrs. Joe Nimsgern and the second prize by Vernon Kramer. Twenty-eight students of the eighth grade of the public grade s c h o o l r e c e i v e d diplomas Friday. The record for receiving the Plaindealer for the greatest number of years at one address is difficult to determine. Among the oldest is Mrs. C.S. Howard, who for the pasty fifty- eight years has received the paper continuously at the same address, McHenry. TWENTY-F1V* YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 15, 1950) ' Sunday, June 11, was one of the most memorable days Mr.and Mrs. Peter Freund, Jr., of Johnsburg will ever know. It was their golden wedding anniversary. Circle J. of the W.S.C.S. is sponsoring a summer fashion show at the McHenry ttounty club June 20. Betty Nielsen will * present the revue. Chris Balek, 90 years old, died Wednesday, June 14, in the Woodstock hospital. He had been confined there for the past three weeks after breaking his hip. Anton P. Freund was elected Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus to serve for the ensuing year. The Paul Patzke family has moved from the Victor Freund place on Rt. 31 to the home of the late Mrs. Augusta Patzke. Damage estimated at $6,000 by McHenry firemen demolished the Heaps cottage at Lilymoor last Friday. Another cottage only a few feet away was also badly damaged. Someting new in the way of a merchants tent will be a feature of the Veterans of Foreign Wars carnival in August in the city park. Two thefts in this community were reported this week. Ambrose Schaefer reported three doors from a house had under construction were taken. Tires wheels and a few other items were reported stolen from a truck owned by John Nett parked in the gravel pit near Johnsburg. James McAndrews is now assisting Frank Adler in the latter's barber shop in John­ sburg. Mr. McAndrews received his training in Chicago and has been employed in McHenry. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 10, 1965) A twenty-five year old McHenry man, John Flach, lost his life in an unusual auto ac­ cident which occurred early Saturday morning, June 5, in Grant township. When 272 seniors march onto McCracken field June 10 for their last assembly as a class, it will be McHenry high school's forty-fourth annual com­ mencement. This was the largest class ever to graduate. When a truck owned by the McHenry County Farm Ser­ vice company caught fire it was dumping corn cobs at the Stilling farm arid backed too close to the burning cobs. Sunday, June 13, has been selected as the date for the first service of Shepherd,of The Hills Lutheran church. Rev. Don Johnson is the pastor. A new Henny Penny carryout service has opened this week on Elm street. Milton J. Voigt of Wonder Lake .was cited for his out­ standing life insurance service at the annual convention of the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Coun­ cilors which met in Dearborn, Mich. The Country Art Fair an­ nually spotlights a particular artist in addition to exhibiting the works of over 100 McHenry county entrants. This year the work of talented Lori Wilhelm will be featured in a one woman show. Thomas F.. Bolger of McHenry State Bank has been named to the Bank Study Committee of the Independent Bankers Association of America, an organization of 6,300 banks in forty states. Usury Bill By State Senate The home,interest ceiling in Illinois was extended at its current 9Vfe percent rate today in a 44-7 vote in the State Senate. The bill, originated in the House and passed there in an overwhelming vote, now goes to the governor. The measure extends for eighteen months the highest rate at which lending in­ stitutions may charge for home mortgage loans in the state. The interest rate would have returned to its former 8 percent rate, where it stood last summer before a one-^ear temporary extension at' the higher level.
