Pastor Addresses His Academy Class Of 1925 Chapel at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. (The following sermon was preached by Father William O. Hanner of McHenry at the Naval Academy chapel, An napolis, Md., for the fiftieth reunion of his class of 1925. Father Hanner is rector emeritus of Holy Comforter c h u r c h E p i s c o p a l , Kemlworth) 'Fifty-four years ago this summer the class of 1925 began to gather at Annapolis, the home of this United States Naval academy, to prepare ourselves for commissioning in the Navy. Four minus some scores ot our renew our fellowship and to declare our loyalty to this school, our classmates and our nation, now so sorely beset, in ways that fifty years ago we could not even imagine. Times have changed; nine presidents have come and gone; the tenth now occupies the White House. "I take it that most of us are, in some sense, men of Christian conviction. There will be wide variation in belief and in practice and in living amongst us. Nevertheless, there are at least some spiritual values we laymen, to augment the work of the churches or Christian groups with which we are associated. "Two virtues will almost certainly appear amongst us. We are, I believe for vastly the most of us, men of obedience. We have been trained to obey orders. We do not carry out our own wills, we look to higher authority. When it makes its sense known to us we take action to make the hopes and plans of higher echelons ef fective. "We almost certainly have a second virtue. We are men who gave of ourselves. Faithful unto death is not an idle phrase amongst those who have been trained in the profession of arms. Killed by enemy action, died as a prisoner, service accident -these appear in '25's Golden Quiver. Many will answer no more roll calls. To those who have gone before us we pay respect today. "No one can hold Christian convictions or read and un derstand anything ef the life of Jesus Christ and not realize that the two virtues 1 have named are marks of the life He lived amongst us on earth. " 'Not my will but thine be done' He prayed in Gethsemane. Rare is the person who, with any knowledge of the facts, would deny the obedience of our Lord to the heavenly Father. And as to self giving, the holy phrase, 'Faithful unto death' leaps to our minds. Obeience and self giving are marks of Christ. From His example, from our profession, from our classmates whom we memorialize today, we learn and see examples of these two great domonical virtues. They are the virtues upon which Christ reared a kingdom. If in any sense we are to aid in building that Kingdom of God, these are the virtues which we mus cultivate. "In the long eras of histroy, nations arise and nations fall. Cultures come and go. Where in the midst of this mixed up and naughty world can a man look for peace and security? It is to be found, my classmates, in the built which He called th Kingdom of God. "Here in the midst of change there is permanence; here in a troubled world lies peace; here amidst the pains and struggles of physical existence lies serenity. There is no other place, no other realm, where the fruits of the spirit grow so valiantly as in Christ's Kingdom under His most gracious leading and with His aid and strength. "This Kingdom it is, my fellows, which our classmates who have gone before helped to build. Perhaps they built all unknowingly. Perhaps they did not sense the rearing of spiritual realities-but-they tried to forward man's highest work. This is where our efforts, blessed by the grace of God, have the fullest fruition. This is what we crave as the world clamors and clangs about us with its transiencies. "We have yet a little time- perhaps more perchance less. Let us in memory of the dead of the Class of 1925 seek to build not only the United State of America, which we love, but the Kingdom of God that Jesus came to found-to build. Here in a building not made by hands, may we come to realize the highest call of man-to build the Kingdom of God. Here may our earthly obedience find a richer consummation, here may our self giving ripen in a fruit of r---- va PAGE 7 - PLAIMUfcALIiK-WtUIVtl/SUAK, Jtrvt, 4, VA NEWS EDITOR'S NOTE: Veterans and their families are asking thousands of questions con cerning the benefits their Government provides for them through the Veterans Ad ministration. Here may that which we offered to our national flower as we find it reared into the permanence of the celestial realms. Here may the passing of fifty years be built into a timeless work. Here may we find that our classmates, whom we called dead, be alive with us in a Kingdom the glories of which no man can know, for there God reigns, and for this all unknowing we have lived and they have died." They must notify the agency of changes in value of their estates or annual incomes, however.
