1 A Day In The Country PAGE 19 - PLA1NDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, lf75 Lora Jacobs stands at left, near one of the Hereford steers raised on the Jacobs farm. Watching are some of the youngsters from the inner city who enjoyed a day in the country. "This is the place you can see stars in the sky". That was one city youngster's definition of rural McHenry when he visited the Ben Jacobs family on their farm at 3619 Ringwood road. No magic of a fairy story could have been more fascinating to the boy, whose teacher explained to a member of the Jacobs family that only once this year has the Chicago smog not obscured the stars. Ninety-three inner-city boys and girls spent a day not soon to be forgotten with the Jacobs'. They had never been on a farm before. While riding on a bus tour of the farm, one child wanted to know what a man with a machine was doing. A member of the host family explained that it was called mowing a lawn. A delighted young Chicago girl, enjoying her first visit to a farm, giggles as Joanne Gillespie prepares her horse to take the child for a ride. HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS Bell Displays Local Growth Illinois Bell has grown a lot lately, but you'd never know it just by looking. Most of the growth has been inside at the telephone central office, 1311 N. Court street in McHenry. ' Installers from the Western Electric company -- the manufacturing and supply unit of the Bell system -- are now completing installation of new equipment there to improve local telephone service and keep pace with telephone growth in the McHenry area. Approximately 1,000 new telephone numbers are being added, along with additional switching equipment, ac cording to Bell Manager Stan Jozwiak. He explained that the amount of switching equipment needed to originate and completel dialed telephone calls increases This was the second year Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs, their son, Ben, 17, and daughter, Lora, 13, undertook this project. Last year the guests numbered about seventy-five. This year the figure jumped to ninety- three. Activities included a tour of the Hereford farm, watching the Jacobs feed the animals and taking part in the every day plans of this large operation. After enjoying lunch on the lawn, Danielle Byron, a 4-H club member, gave a dog care demonstration. Great delight was taken by children and adults in riding the horses. Joann Gillespie, Lora and Danielle helped the smaller ones and calmed any fears of the large animals. Arrangements for the outing were made with the Youth Extension director for 4-H in Cook county. Dave Plocher, McHenry county Extension adviser, assisted the Jacobs' in their undertakine. Below are some representative queries. Ad ditional information may be obtained at any VA office. Q -- I received an honorable discharge after two years of service in Vietnam. Am I eligible for burial in a Veterans administration cemetery? A -- Yes. All of the original VA cemeteries as well as most of the cemeteries formerly under other government agencies are now incorporated into a national cemetery system within VA. You would be eligible for burial in any national cemetery having space, except Arlington where the few remaining spaces are reserved for those who die in active duty or retired status and high government officials. Q -- My 20-year-old daughter, whose father was killed three years ago while on active duty, plans to be married. Will she still be eligible for war orphans' educational assistance? A -- Yes. Marriage of children eligible for this benefit is not a bar to entitlement. COMPLETE POLICE COURSE - Two McHenry City Police department officers were among thirty-four officers from twenty-two departments who recently completed a six-week Basic Law Enforcement course conducted by the Police Training Institute of University Continuing Education, University of Illinois, at its northeast Illinois facility in Lisle. From left, Gerry Stevenson, PTI course advisor; Officers Thomas J. O'Meara and James C. Blue. Q - As a Vietnam-era veteran, I am eligible for a GI home loan backed by the Veterans administration. What papers should I take when I go to a lender to apply for a loan? A -- Get a Certificate of Eligibility from the VA regional office in your state because the lender will need assurance of your eligibility before making a commitment on a GI loan. Application for a loan may be started, however, even before you secure the certificate.
