Distr ic t 156 appointed Clyde Leonard as the director- ,"-">her of the new McHenry Alternat ive high school The al ternat ive school is designed to provide an educat ional opt ion for twenty- f ive selected s tudents who have lef t the exis t ing high school program before earning a diploma. Appropriately, the goal of the a l ternat ive program is to provide an opportuni ty for these s tudents to earn a val id Distr ic t 156 diploma through par t ic ipat ion in learning ex per iences which meet the graduat ion s tandards of the State ot I l l inois , the North Central associat ion, and the local school dis t r ic t . Leonard formerly was* associate director of Peoples School Number 1. in a widely publ ic ized a l ternat ive school located in Seat t le . Wash. He has a Master ' s degree in a l ternat ive educat ion from Indiana univers i ty and his teaching experience has also involved a l ternat ive educat ion approaches. Leonard, his wife Susan, and son expect to purchase a home in the McHenry area When asked about his a l ter nat ive school phi losophy, Leonard suggests that educat ion should be a imed at some mastery of basic ski l ls , reading, wri t ing, and math. He suggests that many/of the learning experiences which the a l ternat ive school wi. i l provide wil l be s t ructured into con t racts worked out between s tudents and s taff members . An important par t of the Alternat ive high school program wil l be community par t ic ipat ion I t i s expected that the off-campus bui lding which is located a t 3701 West Waukegan road, across from Landmark school , wil l en courage community vis i ts to observe and take par t in school act ivi t ies . Two other s taff members wil l work with Leonard this sum mer to prepare for the opening of the school this school year The al ternat ive program is an unique thrust in I l l inois educat ion. The idea was in t roduced in McHenry through the hard work of a small c i t izens ' commit tee interested in providing qual i ty educat ion for McHenry s tudents . Funding lor the program is provided by the Continental Trust Bank in Chicago.
