Lohse of 3502 Lake Vista lane, Wonder Lake, has reported for duty with the 3d Marine Aicraft wing at the Marine Corps Air station, E! Toro, Calif. Major and Mrs. Mark Vycital and daughter, Jamie, and son, Jason, visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Munroe and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vycital, the first part of July. Major Vycital has just completed five years with the Alaskan Air Command, Elrnendurf Air force Base, Anchorage, Alaska. He is on his way to his new assignment as an instructor at the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs* Colo. Major Vycital received his promotion to Major May 1. The can­ didates will be permitted to secure renewals of old sub­ scriptions as well as new ones. They will count for the same number of votes. Radio fans received a pleasant surprise Sunday evening when "Sundogers" our local orchestra broadcast a musical program from the WGES radio station at Oak Park. The "Sundogers" is a seven piece orchestra,* the members being Hubert Schoewer, Carl Weber, Ernest Barbian and Miss Dorothy Knox of our city and John Young and Paul Anderson of Woodstock and H. McCullah of Waukegan. They played ten numbers Sunday evening. A very pretty wedding was solemnized July 17 in the Loretta chapel of St. Mary's college, South Bend, Ind., when Miss Rosemary Nye of this city became the bride of Mr. Walter Carey, also of McHenry. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Father Murphy. Stilling's garage has discontinued the sale of Hudson and Essex cars. He will in the future sell the well known Nash Motor line. Work of making quite ex­ tensive repairs has been st arted at St. John's Catholic church at Johnsburg. Among the alterations and repairs that are to be made include the rebuilding of the entire ceiling and upper walls, the in­ stallation of a new and modern 77.5 Million Acres In Corn For All Purposes X Corn planted for all purposes totals 77.5 million acres, vir-' tually unchanged from 1974 but 8 percent above 1973. Acreage for grain, at 67.0 million, is up 3 percent from last year and 8 percent from 1973. Sorghum" plantings of 18.2 million acres are up 3 percent from 1974 but 5 percent below 1973. Producers expect to harvest 14.9 million acres for grain, a 7 percent increase from 1974. Feed grain planted acreage (corn, sorghum, oats and barley combined) totals 122.7 million acres, nearlv equal to the acreage planted last year. Acreage intended for grain harvest is 104.5 million, almost 4 percent larger than 1974. All wheat seedings total 74.4 million acres, up 5 percent from last year and 26 percent above 1973. Growers seeded 55.8 million acres of winter wheat last fall, the largest acreage since 1953. Durum wheat acreage seeded is 4.6 million, up 13 percent from 1974. Spring wheat other than durum seedings total 14.0 million adres, down 5 percent from last year but 9 percent above 1973. Acreage for harvest is indicated at 50.9 million acres for winter wheat, 4.5 for durum and 13.6 for other spring wheat. Food grain seeded acreage (wheat, rice and rye combined) at 80.4 million acres,is up 4 percent from 1974. Acreage harvested and to be harvested for grain is indicated at 72.6 million acres, up 5 percent from 1974. Soybean planted acreage of 54.6 million is up 2 percent from 1974 and the second largest of record. Growers intend to harvest 53.6 million acres for beans. FORTV YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 25, 1935) That a college course will be offered at the McHenry com­ munity high school this year is becoming an assured fact as arrangements are being completed and plans made by those interested inN this educational project. William H. Althoff, West McHenry hardware merchant^ recently won a $50 cash prize offered by the Illinois Bottled Gas Co. for selling the greatest^ number of new Dri-gas systems during the first fifteen days of July. The local fire department responded to a call at the J.C. Holly filling station when the motor of a pump in the basement caught fire. David Payne of Chicago, a former resident here, has purchased the Ibsh house west of the railroad tracks which has been occupied for nearly thirty years by Mr. and Mrs. Will F'eltz. Miss Virginia Engeln en­ tertained a party of friends Thursday evening In honor of her birthday anniversary. Dancing and music were en­ joyed. A day's outing at the beautiful Pistakee Bay home of the Carl Buehlers was enjoyed by more than eighty elderly men and women, residents of the St. Paul Home for Old People, Chicago, July 18. The guests arrived in a special bus and in cars which had been volunteered for that purpose. George Kinsala, who is employed in Chicago, spent the first of the week at his home here. The enforced vacation was made necessary by an injured leg. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 3 1950) Two McHenry girls are among eleven 1950 high school graduates 'in the county who have been awarded Normal school scholarships. The local girls are Jean Brooks and Rosemary Doherty. Arnold Rauen, state director of bond sales for the state participated in the Quiz Kid program broadcast on N.B.C. last Sunday. The program originates from the Mer­ chandise Mart in Chicago. W.C. "Peggy" Feltz, 72, died at the Woodstock hospital, Aug. 2. The John Justen family moved last week Saturday from the old Justen place north of the McCullom Lake blacktop road, now the property of Frank Howard, to the former George Tonyan home on John street which the Justens recently purchased. McHenry's Marine Day queen, Johnnie Simon, did herseif proud at the McHenry county fair in Woodstock. While she failed to bring home the coveted title of county queen her beauty and personality made her a runner up for the title. Donald Busch of Johnsburg and C.L. Hanson of McHenry .an employee of Anderson's Tree service, narrowly escaped serious injury when their car left the road and overturned near Volo. A gathering was held at the home of Mrs. Zena Bacon on Sunday in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Bacon and family of Trenton, N.J., who are visiting here. Dr. and Mrs. C.W. Klontz have been spending sometime at Pearson, Wis. Miss Patti Gray of McHenry and Ronee Sommers of Wonder Lake are this community's two entries in the 1965 Miss McHenry county Fair contest to be judged Aug 5. Something new and exciting is promised to McHenry residents when the Men of Brass sponsored by the local post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars present the first all senior Drum Corps show on Mc- Cracken Field Saturday evening Aug. 28. There will be six corps in competition in­ cluding the state champions of Wisconsin, the Kenosha Kingsmen, State V.F.W.- champs of Ohio, the Maumee Demons of Maumee, Ohio. Miss Catherine Beattie, 52, of Wonder Lake, died July 24 at Memorial hospital, Woodstock, following a heart attack. Miss Lynn Krebs, who was elected to the high post of governor at Girls State last month, was a guest speaker before the forty-fifth annual department of Illinois Legion auxiliary convention of Illinois, held at the Conrad Hilton hotel in Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Adams announce the birth of their first child a son on July 25 at the McHenry hospital. Susan Orsi of Summit, 111., suffered a broken ankle, when she fell in the river.
