Marl U* Soecief Consultant to 4TAVCO FINANCIAL SERVICES in* ft* ************************ I by William J. Martin The time comes in every driver's life when he has to sell his car. Whatever your reasons for selling, the manner in which you handle the deal can make a difference of hundreds of dollars in the price you get. If you simply take the car to a local dealer and accept his offer, chances are you'll be getting the wholesale value of tne car or possibly less. If you sell the car to a private party, you stand a better chance of getting the retail value of the car. Before you start showing your car, put it in showroom condition. Look at the car from two points of view: running condition and appearance. Repair only the cheaper mechanical items such as brakes and steering. A major engine overhaul will not pay for itself when you sell. Most buyers will pay a lot of attention to appearance. Make sure the car is clean inside and out, and waxed. To spread the word about your car, place a newspaper ad listing the year and make of the car and the options it has. If you're the first owner, say so. And list your price, but don't ^use a phrase like "Best offer," because that suggests you'll settle for less. When you talk to the buyer, be as honest about the car's faults as its good points. Don't let a customer take the car for a test drive alone. And accept only cash or a certified check for payment. Readers' questions are „ welcome and should be sent to P.O.
