SCHLESSER WED IN JOL1ET -=• St. Raymond Nonnatus cathedral, Joliet, was the setting for the wedding of Miss Kathleen M. Curran, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Curran, 908 Farragut Place, Joliet, and Mr. James M. Schlesser, son of Mr. and Mrs. John V. Schlesser, 211 E. Rt. 120, McHenry, Saturday, July 19. The young couple will live in Normal, III. I follow him, step by step.... with my eyes...he can't 6ee me.... I know he is trying to escape to live happy, good and free. Now, he has almost reached the other side should I allow him to live? Or does he deserve to die? His life rests now in my own hand, there is noplace for me, if I fail.... in this here, our own land.... FALL FASHIONS - Committee members are shown planning the third annual Parade of Fall Fashions and chicken salad luncheon for Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 12:30 p.m. at the V.F.W. clubhouse. From left to right, Mrs. Donald Pascareila, Mrs. Edward (This poem was written for the 14th anniversary of the Berlin Wall constructed in August, 1961) THE WALL IN BERLIN "O, God, please don't make me shoot.... he is my friend... we come from the same neighborhood. We grew up together, in this our land. We played together, as little boys, we walked together, to school each day. We shared all the fun, tears and joy we were always good friends... and nothing could tear us, away.... ...until that day in June of 1953 when I saw him, walking on the other side. I was in uniform, he did not recognize me, yes, I felt like a coward ... and was looking for a place, to hide. He was marching with the crowd.... their slogan, their belief, was so different from mine. I saw his face in the bright sunlight at this moment, I felt like Kine (Cain)... I \vould have been able then, to kill... for I was young and -strong and had my own will.... „ # ' On this day of 1953 our friendship died... right on that loud and dirty street. \ I never saw my friend, again... until today, here in Berlin. My duty is now to stand guard... here near this wall... To preserve freedom on our side, to see that no one is breaking the law, and runs across...to hide. I have my rifle, I am ready to shoot, the decision is made for me... To kill a stranger, who is running on foot... to stop and force him down on his knee.... ....but today it is my friend... who is trying to escape. The gun is shaking in my hand, I have to pull the trigger - before it is too late.... He will never know, who took his life, while running here, near that wall.... It is my duty and I have to survive... but somehow, I am trying to stall. Community Calendar AUGUST land2 Gigantic Rummage Sale -- 2618 S. Maybe the day will come when our land is free then we will walk together again... my friend and I, in our Germany... by Maria Heiser NATIONAL NEWSPAPER mOCUTION BsB 1HT The "Fed"...the gener ally accepted nickname for the AmericanFederalRes- erve System. While the act ivities of this unique or ganization are too legion to cover in one writing, and further insights will be provided in later columns, suffice to say that in ad dition to controlling credit and the money supply in our economy, the twelve Federal Reserve Banks perform several day-to day services to facilitate operations of the ' 'the bank on the corner". two of which are mentioned here. Each District Federal Reserve Bank Supplies all the currency and coin in circulation, constantly ab sorbing it from, or releas ing it» to, the member of banks in its' district as the ever fluctuating dem ands of the public dictate. They order more money printed or coined, as re quired, retiring the worn- out and mutilated by re turning it to Washington. Also, the District Fed eral Reserve Banks pro vide the primary facility for the "clearing" or col lection of checks so that money need not be shipped between banks in order to settle accounts. The proc essing and collection of checks between banks was, historically, the banking industry's biggest "hang up" but thanks to the Fed eral Reserve System and today's electronic proces sing, keyed to the cust omer's account number by the magnetic ink symbols on each check, the monum ental task has been made very manageable. Recog nize that about 15 years ago the most skilled oper- / ator could sort and list maybe 1,300 checks in an hour...today the electronic equipment processes over 2,000 checks per minute. With over 23 billion checks written each year, the absence of such a total system would have sent bank customers, service charges skyrocketing instead, they have gone down. < !\ Whether you are interested in saving money. . .or bor rowing, you'll find FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF McHENRY most accommodating!
