St. John's Lutheran Church Woodstock 1-338-5159 or 1-338- 7222 Walt Freund gave McHenry baseball a great boost in the thirties, first putting a team on the diamond at the Newell Colby farm west of town. Later Walt built a diamond north of Anderson's Bar-B-Cue where the First National Bank now stands. A fine covered bleacher stand was erected at the site. Walt's wife kept score for the team until we inherited the job. Those were good days. Walt knew his baseball and made his own decisions. Crowds poured out for the games. Getting out a Centennial paper is a job of great magnitude. Editor "Brenda" worked day and night to lead the way. Foreman Dick worked, planned and worried. The entire staff had some part in the tremendous effort. Most people will preserve a copy. McHenry history is written in these pages. There are some pictures we would still like to get. Who has a picture of the Johnsburg Tigers when they won the State Championship? And our print of the famous town team basketball group of the 1930 era didn't come out good enough to use. So--there will be some to follow. We may push some regular copy aside for a couple of days to make room for Centennial pictures. Be patient. So -- So long. It's been nice to know you. Back row; f (RHOTttCOURTESY OF LeROY SMITH) Cleveland, July 25-- Questions from boaters and livery operators show that confusion and lack of awareness till cloud the question of the legal respon sibilities borne by both the renter and"rentee" of small craft. For instance, how many people realize that certificate of numbers are no longer required on board rental boats in certain circumstances? If a recreational boat is less than 26 feet in length and is to be rented for less than 24 hours, the owner may keep the certificate of numbers on shore. The operator must, however, have on board a copy of the rental agreement giving the boat number and duration of the agreement. Federal boating law requires certain safety equipment in boats, such as Personal Flotation Devices, fire ex tinguishers, backfire flame arrestors, bildge ventilation, navigation lights, and sound producing devices. These requirements are the same whether the operator owns or rents the boat. Few realize that a violation of any of these regulations can make both the owner and operator subject to penalties under federal law. These penalties can range anywhere from a warning to one year in jail and a fine of $1000.00 for each violation. In order to protect them selves legally, both the livery owner and the person renting the boat should assure that the rental agreement lists equipment required by local and federal law and show that such requirements are met. Such an agreement should have the number and type of Per sonal Flotation Devices, fire extinguishers, and of other safety equipment on board the boat at the time of rental. Such practices will prevent con fusion in fixing the blame for requirement violations. In many cases, because the person at fault for violations could not be determined, both the livery owner and boat operator were given fines. Three increases in five years have been made in com pensation payments to service disabled veterans, according to the Veterans administration. Out of those 100 years, we Jv^have spent 40 years getting out column and editing your .'Sports page. m. • *.*?.«* There has been a lot of water £?J#ver the dam in those years, ;*v4>ut our enthusiasm for sports has not diminished. , ̂ ,• It is only that we no longer sit out in the hot sun to score a baseball game. Nor do we head for the locker room to get the official score book after a basketball game and head for home to write a ~ "story while the game is fresh in our mind. The years brought changes, but with able help your sports section goes rolling along. In the days of a weekly paper, something of note could happen on Thursday and be stale news by the next week. George Sullivan of "Put and Take" fame* was sports editor of the Woodstock Sentinel, a daily newspaper, and could scoop us on stories that we had to sit on for a week. Anyhow, we helped each other at times when the chips were down. We have a flock of old pic tures. There won't be space for all. Those that cannot be squeezed in at the last minute will be run from time to time until all are in. Of course, there are some that are not clear enought to ever use. " Forty years ago! Yep. The records show that our first column appeared August 5, 1935. "Zeke" Bacon and his "Bacon's Strip" moved on to greener pastures so Editor "Mose" handed the ball to us. We had a great time with "Mose" and Publisher Renich, both staunch Republicans. Mrs. Renich (another staunch Republican) saw the fun in our ribbing the bosses and egged us on to "give it to them". Before our whirl at writing, we kept score for some mighty good ball teams at Johnsburg. We became a close friend of Joe Frett, a friendship that lasted many years. Joe is gone now, but his memory lingers on. By Evelyn Sanford Tuesday, July 29, Low Grass was the event for the day. Winners were: Class "A" Nancy McAuliffe with 47, Class "B" Verna Schmitt with 50, and Class "C" Shirley Montalbano with 60. The only birdie shooter for the day was Betty Gende, who had a bird on No. 2. Pat Mays sank her approach for a par on No. 10, and also sank her ap proach on No. 15.
