Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hale of Cape Coral were in the fishing party and Eighth Annual Soap Bowl Game Tonight At McCracken Field By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry High School Football Warriors will par­ ticipate in the 8th Annual Soap Bowl game tonight at Mc­ Cracken Field. Game time for the varsity is 7:30 P.M. The Frosh-Soph will begin at 6:30 P.M. The coaches have divided the squad as equal as possible. However this year, the losing coaches, Bob Swartzloff and Greg Johnson will have first pick in the draft . Winning coaches last year, Don Seaton and Vern Peterson, will have the second pick, and then they will alternate choices. Competition is keen at least among the coaches, and if you can recall last year, the Whites coached by Seaton and Peterson won on the last play of the game. Swartzloff and Johnson have been attending practice the last several days, and from reports have a good scouting system worked out. Seaton and Peterson from East Campus have been bogged down with work the past several days, and have missed the daily workouts. Completing their season last week, the girls brought back 3 first place trophies to their sponsor Dennis Conway. Losing only I game, they won their division by defeating Wood­ stock 14-9 on a ( grand slam home run by Deb Mahon in the •Ith inning. The team was paced by three hits by Kathy Rogers and Taina Olsen. McHenry played Woodstock JJI the playoffs and again came home with a 21-17 victory. McHenry jumped off to a quick 8-2 lead after one inning paced by doubles by Greta Martin, Betsy Stephenson and Mary Ellen King. Roth teams scored in the second inning with Woodstock getting 4 runs and McHenry 3 runs. Woodstock scored 8 runs in the next 2 in­ nings while McHenry only scored 5 to lead 16-14 after 4 innings. Eileen Connell replaced Sharon Lively pit­ ching at the start of the 5th inning and allowed Woodstock only 3 runs over the last 3 in­ nings McHenry came back to score 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning paced by consecutive base hits by Mahon. Martin. Barry. Stephenson and Olsen alter a pair of walks to finalize the score of 21-17. McHenry then competed in a tournament over the weekend in Algonquin and won their third trophy of the season. Playing Hebron in the opening game, they won 14-6 behind the 6 hit pitching of Lois Anderson. The team was paced by a homer and triple by Mary Mclnerny.. In game two, Sharon Lively- pitched a 1 hitter and McHenry swamped Marengo 18-0. Game 3 again found McHenry winning by the lop­ sided score of 18-3 over Algonquin. • McHenry again played Hebron in the final game for the championships A very fine game was played by both teams with Hebron scoring 1 run in the first inning. After 3 innings the score was 1-0 in favor of Hebron w hen McHenry scored 3 runs in the 4th on a 2 run triple by Kathy Rogers. w ho scored on a throw ing error PLAYER AVERAGES by the shortstop. In third place at 301 was defending champion Ed Buss followed by Tim Martin in fourth place with 306. There never w as much doubt as to the outcome as Art played steady golf to capture his fifth club championship. Ted Spengel coasted to victory in the Handicap division with a net score of 275 for the 72 holes. Ted had a net of 73 in the final round ending up 12 shots better than second place Tom Burke who had a total of 287. In third place was Clary Fields with 289, followed by Dr. Jay Savler in fourth place at 290. Congratulations to Art and Ted on their impressive victories. Twenty-five teams will be competing in the 2 day Labor Day event which will be held at the club on Sunday, Aug. 31 and Monday, September 1. Should be an interesting week-end as anyone of the teams has a chance to win this event. Travelling to Springfield for their second time in 3 years McHenry County came back with their second championship. Three weeks ago McHenry County had to win in the Sterling Sectional to advance to Springfield. Their first match against Kane County, an an­ nual rivalry, was no match as McHenry rolled to an 18 to 2 win. The final game in Sterling was not quite as easy but the County Farm Bureau team held on to win a close 14-13 decision versus DuPage County. On Monday, August 18 McHenry played their first game in Springfield; they 'creamed' Jersey Countv 20-5! Game two versus Lee County was a li t t le closer but McHenry again was on top by the score of 13-5. The championship game held on Tuesday was a classic versus a strong team from St. Clair County. A clutch grand slam homerun by Len Ackerman put McHenry ahead to stay but a last inning rally needed the heroics of pitcher Gary Miller to save the w in With two outs and runners on second and third, Miller pulled in ahard line shot to keep the lead at 11-10 and give McHenry County the cham­ pionship.
