Act quickly and do what the situation demands. If time and conditions permit, approach the victim from downwind, letting the sea carry him to the boat. By Dick Rabbitt The Blacks coached by Greg Johnson and Bob Swartzloff won the Annual Soap Bowl game at McCracken Field pn Friday night on the last play'of the game. Ron Rode pass to Tom Ludwig covering 92 yds as time ran out proved to be the only scoring of the game. Although Bill Hurckes leftfooted boot for the extra point was good and the Blacks won 7 to 0. The teams played two nineteen minute halves, and no kickoffs were allowed. The coaches did a fine job of dividing the squad into the two units. The Whites coached by Don Seaton and Vern Peterson had two long marches during the evening, but could not get into paydirt. Early in the game the Whites with quarterbacks Jeff Damiani and Lee Steinsdoerfer leading the attack marched 62 yds only to lose the ball on the Blacks 11 yd line. Late in the game the Whites started another march. With Brian Nuss and Jim Engmark making good yardage, the Whites were finally stopped at the one foot line, with 58 seconds remaining on the clock. Johnson and Swartzloff threw caution to the w ind, and elected to go for broke. Rode hit Hurckes for 8 yds, and then calmly stepped into the pocket and put the ball into the arms of Tommy Ludwig on the 20, and the big fullback outraced the defenders and scampered all the way for the touchdown. Billy Hurckes P.A T. was good and the final was Blacks 7 Whites 0. Earlier Jim Engmark of the Whites intercepted a pass and raced 56 yds for the T.D. but a penalty nullified the play. Brian Nuss of the Whites had a 50 yd run and it seemed that Gary Olson and Gary Schweder were in on a lot of tackles. Mistakes were frequent in this warmup game and the fine team of offficials of Gary Fields, Ed Moricoli, John Widmayer and Ed Splinter were seen explaining the various infractions of the rules to the boys. The coaching staff will be busy this week, correcting the mistakes and getting ready for the season opener on Friday against North Chicago. "We hope to have at least 600 riders in the event," said Ross Poore, president of the McHenry County Horsemen's Association, which is organizing the ride. "While McHenry county has what is believed to be the second largest horse population of any county in the nation, we have very few horse trails," Poore explained. "Our ride is designed to point out to county and local government officials that there are many residents here who want trails." For the convenience of riders, there will be four separate starting points, with each course leading to the McHenry County Courthouse. The courses will follow regular roads and each group will be escorted by four members of the Sheriff's Posse for safety. "The ride will demonstrate the fact that it wouldn't be necessary to use roads if trails were available," Poore said. The "Ride-A-Thon" is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., with riders due to reach the courthouse by noon. After a lunch break, they'll begin the return ride. The round trip is approximately 10 miles. A water wagon at the Courthouse will be furnished by the Hooved Animal Humane Society and crews will be on hand to make sure the~£ou£; thouse grounds and roads are* kept clean. "This is in no way intendeafcs a protest ride," Poore said. "It is a demonstration of strength." Rain date for the ride is Sunday, Sept. 28. The four starting points and courses are: North: Elmer Shaid farm, corner of Thayer and Queen Anne roads; Queen Anne to Charles Road to Route 47 to the courthouse. South: Jerome Hancock farm, 4518S. Route 47; Route 47 to the courthouse. East: Sam Diamond's "Our Farm", on Bull Valley road; Bull Valley Road to Country Club Road to Route 47 to the courthouse. West: Nancy Williams home, 18309 Kishwaukee Valley Road; Kishwaukee Valley Road to Jackson Street to Judd Street to Route 47 to the courthouse. Riders may join any of the groups along the route, ac cording to Poore. Participants in the "Ride-A- Thon" are asked to sign up for the event by calling any of the following coordinators: Ross Poore, 312-639-3526; Ruth Anzinger, 815-648-4012; Jan Alfano, 312-669-3383; Donna Peterson, 815-344-0465; Kathy Dam, 815-675-2254. the finishing touches" in readiness for the Warhawks. Coach Day will not commit himself to a starting lineup at this early date, but senior quarterback Don Rode seems to have the nod to pilot the Warriors. Because of the late start for practice, and the early start of school, there is not much in formation about the Warhawks, although they should have a Hock of lettermen this season. returning However the Warriors were the surprise of the North Suburban last year, finishing third with a 6 and 3 record, and again could prove a worthy foe for any conference member. William R. North, Com mander of Chain-O-Lakes Squadron comments, "Any skipper who takes a boat out on the water is responsible for the safety of himself and passengers, and with the in formation he may gain from this free instruction, he can have his boat properly equipped and be able to cope with the many situations he may face on the water." The Chain-O-Lakes Power Squadron is a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, largest volunteer educational organization for boatmen in the world. We are ever loyal to our home team, but went home with the thought that Coach Bill Day and his assistants have a lot of work cut out for them. Graduation took its toll after a very successful season last year. Now it is up to the boys who moved up to the varsity to show what they can do. It is too early to mention names in this corner. However, we saw some boys on the field who have what it will take to give us an exciting season. The North Chicago Warhawks will give our team its first test this week. How sweet it would be to start off with a victory. NEW YORK, NEW YORK 10001 Dear Mr. Walsh, We w ish to thank you for your letter and picture which we recently received. However, we will not be able to use your body in our centerfold. On a scale from 0 to 10, your body was voted minus 2. The rating was done by a panel of women ranging in age from 65 to 75 years old. We tried to have our panel of women in the 25 to 35 year old age bracket rate you, but we couldn't get them to stop laughing long enough. Should the taste of the American women ever change so drastically that they would want you in the centerfold, you will be notified by this office. Meanwhile, don't call us -- we'll call you. Sympathetically, Amanda Smith - PLAYGIRL MAGAZINE The letter was mailed in McHenry. It is the work of some genius. It gave us a big laugh. But, it sounds like a rejection! We folded. Isn't it great to have friends who try so hard to do things for you9 It was down to the Soap Bowl football game Friday night for a preview of the Warrior football team.
