Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Stenger were guests of honor at a "China Wedding" celebration at the Polly Prim Sunday evening. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Covalt, Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Nye, Mr. and Mrs. AH. Purvey, Mr. and Mrs. William Spencer and Mr. and Mrs. R.I. Overton. Thirty-five charter mem­ bers, the required number for organizing a Kiwanis club in McHenry, have been secured and the names forwarded to headquarters in Chicago. The Sun Dodgers orchestra of our city is fast proving one of the most popular in the coun­ try. During the summer they have proved a delight to radio fans by the55 programs broad­ cast from the WGES station. Mrs. Truman L. Flanders, the former Lorena E. Colby, passed away at her home near West McHenry on Sept. 1. She. was born in Nunda township on March 18, 1875. I. Levinsen will have a car load of peaches and plums on sale this weekend. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 12, 1935) Mrs. Ada Bobb, 64 years old, died at Freeport last week following a long illness. Mrs. Bobb was a former resident here, her husband being the photographer here for several years. She has continued to own the home and studio now oc­ cupied by. A. Worwick. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Barbian were among the guests of Thomas Brennan on his sport cruiser on Lake Michigan. ' Miss Margaret Nelson will be at the K. of C. hall Tuesday afternoon. She will give lessons in tap, acrobatic, toe, ballet and ballroom dancing to beginners or advanced pupils. Eugene Sayler, who has completed a preparatory course at DeKalb, will enter the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in Chicago, this fall. A display of musical in­ struments from the Lyons Band Instrument company will be exhibited at the high school Saturday evening. They will be handled through A.E. Nye. All parents and children interested in playing a musical in­ strument are invited to attend. The plan will be to rent the instruments on a three months basis. Ivory H. Pike, 91 years old, a veteran of the Civil War and a pioneer of Pistakee Bay, as well as Illinois resident, died Sept. 5 at his home in Oak Park. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Williams are now keeping house in a flat in the Mrs. Catherine Schneider building on Riverside drive. Mr. Williams is an employee of the Gas company and is well known in this vicinity. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO r(Taken from the files of Sept. 21, 1950) Henry E. Kinsala, a lifelong resident of this area, died unexpectedly Sept. 18 in Vic­ tory Memorial hospital at the age of 75. Paul Steinle, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Steinle of Wonder Lake who operate the Wonder Food Shop at Wonder Lake, was taken to St. An­ thony's hospital, Rockford, suffering from polio. The young man was preparing to enter the University of Illinois as a junior when he was stricken. The McHenry Methodist church is celebrating its cen­ tennial year Oct. 20-21 when Bishop Ralph McGee will be present to dedicate the new parsonage. The Society of Methodism has been in McHenry for the past 110 years. It was Republican day in McHenry and throughout most of McHenry county last Tuesday and the sun shone brightly as the caravan moved from city to city on a hand shaking tour. Roy Kent has be^n re­ appointed to the zoning board of appeals by chairman T.F. Nolan and confirmed by the county board. His term runs for five years. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Dietz have sold their home and part of their spacious grounds on East River road to Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Seggert of Chicago who will make this their permanent home. Mr. and Mrs. Dietz have gone to Glendora, Calif., where they will make their home. TEN YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 16, 1965) Richard Bitterman, 18, of Lakemoor, died in Delta Community hospital, Sikeston, Mo., Sept. 14, of injuries sustained in an auto crash. Three McHenry area men received fifty year pins and aprons from District Deputy James Crout at Past Masters and Fifty Year Member Night of the local Masonic lodge held last week. They are Arthur J. Starts Mailing 1976 License Plates Michael J. Howlett, Secretary of State, announced that his office has started mailing of 1976 calendar year license plates to passenger car owners requesting reassign­ ment. Howlett cautioned motorists that calendar year plates may not be legally displayed on vehicles until Dec. 1. "It is estimated that over 1 million sets of plates will be mailed this year for reassignments," said Howlett. Reassignment of present license numbers is guaranteed under state law if application is made by the specified date. The new Illinois Bicentennial license plates, which will be red, white and blue, will be displayed on all passenger cars in 1976. Kelley Jordan, 11 of Normal, submitted the winning design in a state-wide contest sponsored by Secretary Howlett. Authorities in the field say that it marked the first time in history that any state involved the public in the selection of color or design of its license plate. More than 400,000 school children participated. Howlett said that license plate applications will only be accepted and processed with the pre printed renewal forms. Someone will go blind every 12 minutes, says the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness, adding another 45,000 people to the nation's sightless in the next 12 months. The real tragedy, points out the Society, is that current medical knowledge and techniques could save the vision of at least half of these people. What remains is to reach them in time. Rudat of Woodstock were renamed Memorial Gift chairpersons of the McHenry County Heart association. Their appointment was an­ nounced by Richard Szura, president of the local heart group. The Rudats will accept gifts from McHenry county. The special advantage of memorial gifts to the Heart association is in the many benefits they bestow, they said. Memorial gifts are a lasting tribute to the person honored. They also help the Heart association, which is doing something about heart disease. Memorial gifts support heart research, public education and community programs such as the Blood Pressure screenings held throughout the past year. To make a memorial gift, send the name of the person to be honored, your own name and address and that of the person to be notified, together with your check or money order in any amount to McHenry County Heart association, in care of William Rudat, 1900 N. Seminary, Woodstock, 111., 60098. Gifts are promptly acknowledged with a dignified card naming the donor and the person in whose honor the gift is made. The amount of the gift is not stated.
