PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1975 Mundelein Team Spoils Warrior Homecoming 10-0 By Dick Rabbitt The homecoming jinx still prevailed for the McHenry Warriors as they lost their sixth straight homecoming football game 10 to 0 to Mundelein For the second straight game an inept offense on the part of the Warriors proved their downfall. They managed 67 yds on the ground in 29 carries and only 59 thru the airways. The Warriors have not scored a touchdown in the last eight quarters of play. The Warriors won the toss and chose to receive. Engmark brought the kick back to his own 23. The Warriors failed to gain, and Rode punted to the Mustang 47. Using the twin quarterback system the Mustangs marched the 53 yds in 10 carries for the T.D. Running backs Jim Fricker and Bob Kluga moved the ball to the Warrior one, where quarterback Tim Wilson went in for the T.D. at 3:45 of the period. Wilson's kick was good for the P.A.T. and the Mustangs led 7 to 0. The Warriors started a march after the kickoff that took them to the Myndelein 26 before they lost the ball on downs. The Warriors defense went to work and took over on the Mundelein 48. With a 4th and 7 Rode punted into the end zone. After several first downs, the Mustangs were again forced to punt, this time to the Warrior 38. After an exchange of punts again the Mustangs took over on the Warrior 56. Again the Warrior defense arose to the occasion and forced another punt by Reece of Mundelein. With time running out in the half, Rode, Warrior quarterback was sacked twice for losses of 27 yds as the half ended. Charged Up Warriors A charged up Warrior team returned for the second half, and after kicking off to the Mustangs, the defense again held, and forced the Mustangs to punt again, to the Warrior 49. With 4th and 6, a bad pass from center enabled Rode to pick up the ball, and miss by inches of gaining the first down. After an exchange of punts, the Mustangs took over on the Warrior 40. Again with Fricker and Klug carrying the mail they moved to the Warrior 6 as the third period became history. Failing to make the necessary 6 yds, on 4th and 8 Tim Wilson booted a field goal from a difficult angle to make the score 10 to 0. Later in the period a Rode to Dodge pass was complete, aided by a 15 yd penalty against the Mustangs put the ball on the 41. Again the offense failed, and the Mustangs took the punt on their own 15. Steve Mai moments later recovered a Mustang fumble on the 42, and it looked as if the Warriors might come alive. With Brian Miller now at quarterback replacing Rode, the Warriors took to the air. A completed pass to Klapperich was good for a first down, but a penalty brought the ball back. Miller on a broken play raced for a first down, and another 11 penalty against the Mustangs put the ball on the 30. After another first down, as the game ended Miller completed a pass to Nuss on the Mustang 11. It was a dejected Warrior crew that walked off the field after the game. Again the jinx seemed to be there. Other teams are successful at their homecoming games, but not in the case of the Warriors. It was the sixth homecoming loss in a row for the McHenry high team. The defense played good ball. After the initial march by the Mustangs the Warriors held their own. During the third quarter alone the offense ran only five plays, and the defense was on the field the rest of the time. On the other hand the coaching staff must get the offense together. In the past two games the Warriors have managed to total only 94 yds on the ground, and just a little better in the passing game. This week I'm sure that the offense will get plenty of work. Next Saturday the Warriors travel to Tigertown for their homecoming. So Warriors let's turn the trick, and knock off the Crystal Lake eleven on their homecoming. It's about time we spoil the host school's festivities. WARRIOR STATS Out Of Bounds? Bill Hurckes of the Warriors grabs a Rode pass good for a first down on the Mundelein 41 yard^line. Only, the ref who is not near this action ruled that Hurckes is not in bounds. It appears in this photo that Hurckes has at least one foot in bounds but it will remain a question as a couple of Warriors on the side Line are Mocking this view. Crystal Lake and Larkin of Elgin tied for first place with a team score of 303. The Warriors with 315 were in sole possession of fifth place. Cary Grove with 306, and Elgin with 313 finished above the Warriors. Once again Coach Cuda called upon 'his sophomores, and they didn't let him down. Tom Pepping and Tim Beyers each carded a 77 over the par 72 course. Bob Buenzli had a 79, Bob Lunkenheimer an 82, and Lowell Kively had an 87. The McHenry team will host both the North Suburban and State District next week. More about those matches on Friday. ,? Anyone interested is invited to attend. How come big time athletes pick off such good looking gals? Couldn't wait to see what Dick Rabbitt's surprise was so we drove down to the game a little earlier Friday night. Walked in with Jim Althoff, President of School District 156, and his wife, looked up and saw a crow's nest built on top of the press coop. No way were we going to climb the ladder to see the new addition, but know it housed the cameramen and Ken Ludwig at the telephone to the bench. A new counter extends the whole length of the press coop. A great start has been made and a couple of more im provements may be coming. Robert Swartzloff, West Campus Principal, climbed up to see how our gang liked the change. Think he got tired of i FALL FREEZER SPECIAL! Green Street 385-55U0 Harriers Split With Mundelein And Lake Forest ^re hearing about the crowding in the old coop. Homecoming crowd was large, weather was good, John Leighty's band and all the bouncy gals were great. Trouble was -- we lost the football game 10-0 to Mun delein. Might have known a tough game was coming, Coach Bill Day had his jacket off (bare arms) as he marched up and down right from the opening kickoff. The visitors lined up two quarterbacks on offense. Rather confusing at the start, but not so hard to catch as the game moved along. Dick Rabbitt told us that Mundelein had only 27 players turn out for football. They may be small in numbers, but show real gusto and enthusiasm in the execution of plays. Lest we forget. That honey of a baton twirler, Dawn Welch, is all class. In the spring we wondered when to take off the snow tires. Now we wonder when to put up the storm windows. Remember back when a man wouldn't think of buying a new suit without two pair of pants? And - when you bought a new suit from Ray McGee, he asked you to pick out a necktie on the house. How come so many football teams have their series of plays set up for a pass on third down? Everybody knows it is coming. If we told you "Running Warriors" how we lost the report on your events last week, you wouldn't believe. Anyhow, we can't blame it on anybody else so will run it this issue. Like the old song: "What can I say dear after I say I'm sorry?" For many moons we have thought of a campaign to get drivers to watch and read all signs to the right. Even thought of asking Secretary of State Mike Howlett to pick up the idea with the thought of cutting down accidents. So -- we pulled up to Mrs. Math (R6se) Schaefer's house on the John St., side the other day, parked and went inside. Rose said, "Aren't you afraid to park there? The police are giving out tickets." Hadn't seen that "NO PARKING HERE TO COR NER" sign. So v/e moved the car. t> Parts of this women's lib is too much. Always did favor equal pay for equal work and some of the other ideas. But, now we can't say chairman or chairlady. It has to be chairperson.
