(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Golfers Lose To Harrington 167-179 By Dick Rabbitt Playing their poorest golf of the season Coach Chuck Cuda's McHenry high golfers lost to Barrington last Thursday at Biltmore Country club by the score of 167 to 179. The inability of the upperclassmen to keep pace with the youngsters led to the 1 golfers downfall Sophomore Bob Lunkenheimer led the locals with a 39, followed by sophomore Tom Pepping with a 44. Lowell Kively had a 48, matched by Bob Buenzli, and Jim Burke had a 51. Tim Beyers 44 paced the sophs to a 190 to 195 win over the Bronco's underclassmen. SNOWMOBILE I.C. Wins Over Hurricanes 15-0 By Dick Rabbitt Coach Tom Parker's Marian "Hurricanes" tried, oh how they tried, but they could not get the job done and lost to I.C. of Elmhurst 15 to 0 Saturday at Marian. It was a Northeast Catholic Conference game, and left I.C. with a 2 and 0 record, while Marian stands 0 and 2 in the conference, On a perfect afternoon for football, the two teams battled it out on the Marian gridiron, but the badly outmanned Marian eleven finally went down to defeat. The gallant Marian defense time and time again stopped the I.C. offense deep in Hurricane territory. Midway in the opening period the I.C. eleven marched to the Marian 3, only to be halted on a power sweep. Taking over on the three, Marian put on a march of their own, only to fumble near midfield. As their period ended the I.C. crew was headed for the Marian goal. After making 4 first downs in a row, on second and six, Kevin Strasser flipped a pass to brother Shawn for 25 yds and a I.C. T.D. Frank Ferrara's kick was good and the Hurricanes trailed 7 to 0. (The Strasser brothers are son- of former I.C. Basketball coach Don Strasser) no stranger to former St. Mary's fans and this reporter, who coached against him for four years. Throughout the rest of the contest it became a battle of the defensive squads. Twice in the second half Marian receivers were in the open on pass situations, but both times the receivers were not able to handle the perfectly executed pass. With just over a minute remaining Marian had the ball on their own 20. On third and 10, Fred Quinn a linebacker in tercepted the pass and went unmolested into the end zone for the final score, and put the game out of reach for the Hurricanes. Again Coach Parker had nothing but praise for his team. The defense played ex ceptionally well, holding the I.C. team six times within the 30 yard line. If those two passes were caught, it could have been a Marian victory. But that is part of the game. Marian played well, were outnumbered, but they were not outfought. Vic tories will come if the team continues to play the way they did Saturday. A Great Time A great time was had by all who attended the Annual Get Acquainted Picnic of the N o r t h e a s t e r n I l l i n o i s Association of Snowmobile Clubs at the Gages Lake Picnic Grove. This year's picnic was the biggest and best yet. The weather was great and the food was superb. Members of most of the 25 snowmobile clubs in the association attended the picnic with many other snowmobilers and the general public. The picnic was a cooperative undertaking with members of the various clubs being responsible for the many different activities, games, food, drawings and beverages. A half dozen of the local snowmobile dealers showed their wares and these were all closely examined by the hundreds of people in at tendance. Many thanks to all who worked on the picnic for their time and effort. Everyone I have talked to who attended, enjoyed themselves and most ate too much of the delicious food. A bigger and better picnic is already in the planning for next year. Hope to see you there if I don't see you before out on the Snowmobile Trails. Think Safety Mel The 1975 Hurricane cross country squad is off to a tremendous start! Because the majority of Harriers who reported to practice were underclassmen, Coaches Hans Rokus and Tom Blenner have placed the team's strength on the Frosh-Soph level. Of the fifteen members only three are upperclassmen: Seniors Mike Nitz (McHenry), Joe Mc- Cormack (Woodstock), and Chris Crowley (Algonquin). The Sophomores on this year's squad are Bill Johnston (Marengo), Ernie Pieroni (McHenry), Pete Wilt (McHenry), Jim Wickman (Johnsburg), Mark Streit (Crystal Lake), Tony Mc- Cormack (Woodstock), Mike O'Leary (Woodstock), and Bruce Davis (Woodstock). Rounding out the team are Freshmen Bill Heric (Algonquin), Darryl May (Johnsburg), and Fran Mc- Cormack (Woodstock). Marian's dual meet Fresh- Soph record at this point of the season stands at 7-0. Their victories have come over St. Edward's, Grayslake, Round Lake, Burlington Central, Grant, Lake Zurich, and St. Francis. In the three Invitationals that the Hurricanes have par ticipated in, the young squad placed eighth in the 21 team Kaneland Invitational; Sixth in the 18-team Warren In vitational' and captured a third place team trophy in the 12 team Wauconda Invitational. Pacing the Hurricanes in both the dual meets as well as capturing individual trophies in the Invitationals thus far have been No. 1 Darryl May, No. 2 Mike O'Leary, No. 3 Tony McCormack, No. 4 Bill Heric, No. 5 Mike Gallagher, No. 6 Bruce Davis, No. 7 Pete Wilt and No. 8 Fran McCormack. Commenting on the progress of the season thus far, Coach Hans Rokus stated: "I am extremely pleased with our fast start. Our returning Sophomores have come through for us as we expected and our Freshmen have given us the needed depth. In the big Invitationals we have done a super job and in the duals we hope to remain undefeated in our conference!" r Montini Mustangs Defeat Harrison MARIAN CENTRAL'S-Pom Pon girls recently returned from the Badgerette Clinic in Rockford with three first place ribbons. "MARIAN POM POM GIRLS SHOW TALENT AT ROCKFORD CLINIC" Some of the busiest girls in town have been the Marian Central Pom Pom girls for the 1975-76 season, who have just returned from Rockford where they attended a Badgerette Pom Pom camp held at Rock- ford College. While at camp the girls learned two routines per day, with daily evaluations and competition every night. Each squad was required to prepare a poster depicting "Spirt Week", a scrap book, a sixteen count original step presen tation, an original routine, and a candidate for "Miss Badgerette' ; who competed for the title with the candidates from the other squads. Special ribbons were awarded to the winners of each category and first through fourth place ribbons were awarded to deserving squads after each category and first through fourth place ribbons were awarded to deserving squads after each nightly competition, with correspon ding point values which were tallied up at the end of the week, to determine the overall competition winner. The first game on Sept. 16 was against St. Mary's of Wood stock, Paula Hansen started the game with a home run that gave Montini a lead they never gave up. Another home run by Paula along with home runs by Priscella Kasprzyk, Peggy Freund and Kathy Sabatka inspired the team to a 23-3 victory. On Sept. 23 the team traveled to Barrington to play Coun tryside. It was a very close game until the fifth inning when Debbie Mauer hit two home runs helping Montini break ahead. In the sixth inning she hit a third home run. Sue Dixon also contributed a home run and the final score was 24-16. It was a real pitchers duel when Fox River Grove came to For the second time in three years the McHenry Hornets Junior football team won the annual Mayor's trophy game against Fox Lake. The mayor's trophy is presented to the winning team after the game. The first team to win it three times gets permanent possession. In 1973 McHenry won 7-0. In 1974 it was Fox Lake, 31-0 and in '75 McHenry won 33-12. After losing to Deerfield 6-0 and Rolling Meadows, 35-6, the Hornets had to face an un defeated team at Fox Lake high school stadium Sunday, Sept. 21, for the annual game. After Fox Lake kicked off to McHenry and failing to get the first down, McHenry punted to Fox Lake. On the first play, Fox Lake scored on a 55 yard run, and it seemed that it was going to be a long day for the Hornets. After receiving the kick off McHenry marched down the field and scored. First quarter score, McHenry, 7, Fox Lake, 6. In the second quarter both teams scored and at the half it was McHenry 14, Fox Lake, 12. The girls will face Harrison on Wednesday at Harrison for their next game. The game will start at 3:30.
