Editor's Quote Book In commitment, we dash the hopes of a thousand potential selves. Buying Broilers When buying a counter-top rotisserie-broijer, choose one that 's easy to clean Make sure that all parts come apart for cleaning and that the rack and pan are immersible in sudsy water (by Fathet William O. Hanner, rector emeritus of Holy Comforter church, Episcopal, Kenilworth) When we arose on the mor ning of the twenty-fourth we found there had been a stiff freeze during the night. I remembered scraping ice off the windshield was a tough job sol surrendered to temptation and ran the motor for ten minutes. The inside of the car was warm, the windows clear. After an early breakfast we headed south. We dropped south on county G out of Rhinelander enjoying the sun through the leaves in the early^ light. Frost had crusted trees and grasses. Beside the multi-colored leaves we had a "begemmed forest about us. Sparkles were added to the colors. County route G wanders about the woods emerging near Pelican lake (where did they get that name from? I don't believe any respectable pelican would get that far away from warmth and salt water). We picked up Route 47 (45 too) near Pelican lake, where I stopped for picture taking. The colors were mirrored in the lake, white birch gave in teresting groups of parallel lines. It was easy to frame your photos. Another car stopped. Another hobby photographer got out. "Be careful dear," said his wife, "Don't waste your film. We've just started." (The eternal mother instinct.) After Antigo there were no more displays of color. We were a day or two early for it in this countryside. Before long we came to an Indian Co-op. There are numerous tribes in Wisconsin: Menominee, Ojibways, Oniedas, Chippewas, and others. We stopped to look over their wares. Thirty-five years ago Mrs. Hanner bought a woven basket from the Menominees for $4. On this day she bought a slightly larger one for $15. The old one is still strong. Now we have two when we go to the St. Martin's Farm fair, southwest of Milwaukee. Some of the work is fantastic. I saw a picture of a Roman Catholic bishop celebrating a high Mass for a big Indian powwow. Instead of a miter he wore an Indian chief's feather headdress. To my mind this was most fitting and a distinct compliment to original inhabitants of our area. Night found us in Fond du Lac, a city we love to visit. There, there is an order of nuns of the Episcopal church with whom Mrs. Hanner and I have been associated for over thirty years. We have often visited the House, and the Sisters have stayed with us on their travels both in Illinois and Florida. We have spent time with them in Fond du Lac where their mother house is and in Bay Shore, Long Island where they maintain a retreat house. We made arrangements to go around and call on the new Mother, Mother Boniface. This is a most fitting name for the mother for she was born a German citizen in Germany. St. Boniface is the Apostle of the Germah nation, lived from 680-754. She first became in terested in the Church through U.S. Army chaplains in the Army of Occupation. At first she sang in their choirs, was confirmed and eventually came to this country, where, in California, she became associated with the Order of the Holy Nativity and was even tually professed. A year or two back she was elected the Reverend Mother. I had long been aware that with the unrest of our times several of our orders had lost numbers and faced distressing difficulties. The Sisters of whom I write were such an order. But the Mother reported to me a busy convent, a full Novitiate (women preparing for profession in the order). The novices were college graduates, one had taught on college level, another had been an officer in the WACS in the Army, another was a nurse R.N. The mother was en thusiastic .She laughed and said. "God has rained blessings on this Order till I am exhausted taking advantage of them." This means He is raining blessings on Christians. Maybe those of us who have been discouraged at times had better render thanks and take new courage. 1 gave thanks to God for the witness of this happy, holy, industrious and courageous woman. I came home enthused all over again for my order. Somehow in His good time may God's Kingdom come In the meanwhile we had all better work harder, witness better and be thankful. The next day we left bright and early and were soon home watching the coming of the colors to Illinois and the busy fall season. Look up everyone. God is not dead. He still does great things when He finds a man or woman through whom He can work. Charity begins at home if it begins. Terry Fluger Is Enrolled In Bible Institute Terry L.
