Luther League Enjoys Party Thirty members of the Luther League or youth group at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, 404 North Green street, McHenry, en­ joyed a Halloween party in the fireside room of the church Sunday evening. Everyone attended the party in costume and enjoyed an evening of games, refreshments and fellowship. The group recently com­ pleted a very successful paper drive in order to earn scholarships for a weekend winter retreat planned in January at Lutherdale Bible camp in Elkhorn, Wis. It will be held Nov. l, and 2 after all the Masses at both St. Mary's and St. Patrick's. All parishioners, Montini parents, friends, neighbors and anyone who would like to donate bake goods, can bring them to Montini Middle school Mary K hall or St Patrick's church hall Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and before all the Masses Sunday. The public is welcome. The history of Beta Sigma Phi from its growth of seven members in Abiline, Kas.. back in 1931 until the present time was presented by Vice President Jan DeVries at the regular meeting of Pi Alpha, chapter of Beta SigmajPhi, Oct. 16. Guests Sandy Etten and Sue Van Riper were present at the meeting which was held in the home of Kahhy Johnson. Members, guests and tran­ sferees listened with interest to the background history of their organization. Along with the history of Beta Sigma Phi, its goals and pur­ pose. was a complete ex­ planation from all officers and committee chairmen on their duties in the chapter. President Sharron Powers read the opening and closing rituals so guests would hear the meaningful^ words more clearly. Transferee Dianne Johnson from an Elgin chapter and Isabel Taylor from Jackson­ ville, Fla., were warmly welcomed by members of Pi Alpha. The chapter is presently trying to get an official week established to honor Beta Sigma Phis all over the United States. 1 Also, the chapter is looking for women who have been of great service Jo their com­ munity. The wdman chosen will be honored as "Woman of the Year". Refreshments were served following the business meeting. Reciprocity Day At Woman's Senior Citizen Club Meeting Thanksgiving TEACHERS MARRY - Miss Kathie Scales of Lake Geneva, Wis., and Mr. David Rigby of Woodstock, both teachers in Johnsburg, were married at the First Presbyterian church of Woodstock Saturday, Aug. 23. The Rev. A.W. Murschel officiated at the evening, double ring ceremony. The bride is a second grade teacher at James C. Bush school and the groom teaches seventh and eighth grade science at Johnsburg Junior high schooL The bride's parents are Mrs. Ruth Scales of Grant, Mich., and David Scales of Melrose Park. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Rigby of Woodstock. The newlyweds are now making their home in Wonder Lake. PHOTO BY RANDY SWIKLE VFW Kickoff Dinner Held For Membership The Fifth district of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies auxiliary gathered at St. Andrews Country club Saturday, Oct. 25 for their annual membership kickoff dinner Guest speakers for the evening were Mildred Leff, president of the Ladies Auxiliary, and Quentin Bowers, commander of the Veterans of foreign Wars of the state of Illinois. Both expressed their pleasure for the many mem­ bers who have already paid (heir 1976 dues. I Attending from McHenry and $11 members of either V.F.W. Post 4600 or their Ladies auxiliary were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Jende, Mr. and Mrs. K.W. Abbink, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kuck and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Roberts. Mrs. Jende is president of the Ladies auxiliary and Mr. Roberts, commander of the post. "Preparation For Parenthood" Classes Nov. 3-10 A reminder to prospective parents comes from Bert Hanson, executive director of Memorial Hospital for McHenry County at Woodstock. Hanson announced the next "Preparation for Parenthood" free instructional course-a two-evening session- will begin at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3. The informational program will be held in the hospital dining room on both Nov. 3 and Nov. 10, as a free community service program of Memorial hospital. Both prospective mothers and fathers are in­ vited, and in the past frequently both expectant parents have attended these sessions. Prospective parents are asked to obtain the routine permission slip from their doctors. Mrs. Fran Scholpp, R.N., Obstetrical department supervisor, will take part in the program, which includes a tour of the hospital's maternity department, movies and talks. Dinner Set On Oct. 21, fifty-four mem­ bers of the Pioneer club and two guests met at the American Legion hall, Richmond, for the regular meeting. A committee in charge of arrangements reported that the Thanksgiving turkey dinner will be held at Andre's, Richmond, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18. Reservations were taken. President Marian Pretzman attended tri county meetings and reported that the Pioneer club is the only one that had its own registered nurse in the group. Frances Foley, a registered nurse, has offered her services in checking blood pressures. Publicity chairman, Eva Freund, told of the offer of free flu vaccine to be given to senior citizens at Harvard hospital, Memorial hospital inWoodstock and McHenry hospital. This offer is through the County Health department, local hospitals and the McHenry County Senior Citizen's council. The Christmas party was discussed. The next meeting will be Monday, Nov. 3 instead of the usual Tuesday date. The com­ mittee for this meeting lists Mae Weber, A1 and Mary Tomasek, Elizabeth Witt- mayer, Wanda Todd, Frieda Wolff and Jeanette Arp. Kaufman, chief of the division of the Attorney General's office of Consumer Fraud and Protection. Members are reminded to bring food for FISH. BIRTHS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WOODSTOCK A son was bom to Mr. and Mrs. David Simms of McHenry Oct. 23. McHENRY HOSPITAL Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie McLaughlin of Wonder Lake became the parents of a boy Oct. 25. Theodore Dlugosz of McHenry is the proud grand­ father of a boy born to Mr. and Mrs. Michael P. Dlugosz of DesPlaines at Lutheran General hospital, Park Ridge. The baby, William Joseph, was born Friday, Oct. 17. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. William J. Kennedy of Park Ridge. By Sarah Anne Sheridan Here is an easily pre­ pared recipe for that uni­ versally appealing meat- chicken. Chicken with Dumplings 5 pound chicken 1/8 t salt 2 t pepper Few stalks of celery Cut chicken in pieces and cover with boiling water. Add celery. Reduce heat and cook slowly until ten­ der, about 2 to 2Vi hours. Add salt after 45 minutes of cooking. Let stand until fat collects on top. Remove most of fat with a spoon. Take chicken out and re­ move skin and bones. Heat stock to boiling point. Add dumplings. Dumplings 1% c flour 1 t salt 2 t baking powder \ c milk Sift flour, salt and bak­ ing powder together. Add milk gradually. Beat until smooth. Drop into hot stock by tablespoons. Cover tightly. Cook for 15 min­ utes. MAIL EMBARGO Due to strike conditions, there is an embargo on all classes of mail to Canada. Any mail sent to Canada will, of necessity, be returned to the sender by the local postmaster. This is the season when many sleeveless dresses can get a new look by sew­ ing in long sleeves of a dif­ ferent fabric or color. The layer look of the past sea­ son has made this a good style.
