Corson and the McHenry County Sheriff's auxiliary police for their cooperation Nov. 6. "Until the need for traffic control arose with the presentation of the Defenders' Energy Fair at the fairgrounds, we were unaware that such a service was available. The auxiliary was of great help to us in avoiding traffic congestion when busloads of students arrived at the exhibit hall during the day and hun dreds of cars in the evening. "As a volunteer group our selves, we well know the kind of commitment it takes to make any volunteer effort successful, and we commend auxiliary police members for the ef ficient and important service they are rendering our com munity. EDITORIALS School Discipline It is well to take stock of our local schools every so often, and the first months of the new school year is a good time to review local conditions. Parents of children-many of whom have been raised on progressive theories which are now largely discredited--have an obligation to cooperate with school authorities in every way possible and to make their task easier as they attempt to guide, train and educate the children of this community. Children must be disciplined, as well as educated, for if they are not disciplined they cannot be educated. This is one point parents must keep in mind. Also, it should be remembered that proper disciplining never hurt anyone, and is a prerequisite in our social order. As the school year gets under way, parents should cooperate with teachers and school officials, and encourage their children to approach school with an attitude that will provide a suitable climate for all to learn. Escape In Drugs A University of Michigan study finds that more than half the young men in the nation have smoked or tried pot (marijuana) in the past twelve months. The study is not necessarily accurate for, like polls, it's a projection based on interviews with only 1,600 individuals. But it shows that pot is widely used or has been tried by many young Americans. After twenty-three, encouragingly, three-quarters of the users have kicked the habit. Thus most Americans reject use of the drug, which recent studies have shown as dangerous psychologically and physically. But the use of drugs, nevertheless, is a subject all Americans must cope with, especially since the same study showed six per cent of all young men interviewed had tried the extremely dangerous hard drug, heroin. Most of these, however, also kicked the habit, though some two per cent of the individuals interviewed had a hard drug problem. The central fact to keep in mind about drugs, for young people, is that drugs take one out of the real world. With all their idealism (and disillusionment), young people sometimes opt to escape from the real world and live in a dream world erf love, happiness, pretty pictures and thoughts. This sort of refusal to face the world as it is, is unproductive. If enough Americans follow this course, shunning responsibility and refusing to expend the energy, ambition and work necessary to build a life and business and family, the nation will decline into weakness and chaos. The end result will be a loss of freedom, democracy and our present living standard. Some dreamers think that would not be too bad. They have not lived under undemocratic systems or in unproductive societies where the people have traditionally lacked ' industry and the work ethic which built our country and civilization. For ^our Information Dear Friends, Just as the funeral is a ceremony where none is invited but all may attend, so is the condolence or sympathy visit It is often most helpful to the bereaved. Friends should avoid the mistaken belief that the mourner prefers to be alone. Pain suffered in soltude is heav ier to bear than pain which is shared.
