PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY. DECEMBER 5, 1875 EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR. What's in the news? So We pick up the morning paper and find such startling i t e m s a s : • ' The Chicago Bears lost togain. L In the Masters tournament [two players get into a squabble <fmd walk away. -- And all these ears we thought of tennis as a love game. The Chicago Blackhawks tie (again. Ties count in hockey, but seem as unsatisfactory as eating soup with a fork. The economy is on the rise -and all will be peachy in '76. ^That's what the man said. Three different groups are on ^strike. Two of them can hold out for a couple of weeks without bothering too much, but that other one -- the gar bage collectors -- can stir up quite a stench if they don't show up for two weeks. Player of the weld SWIMMING BRUCE FETZER won both, the 200 and the 500 yard free style event against Larkin last week. Bruce was alsoeffe- ctive in the Warrior win of the 400 yard free style relays. "The Wednesday Bank" THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF McHENRY 3814 W. Elm St.,McHenry, III 815-385-5400 MORE NEWS-- The Chicago Bulls basketball team loses again. Chicago needs a winner in some sport. Anybody for dominoes? The Bears thought George Blanda was over the hill a decade ago. His magic toe sparkled again Sunday as he booted a field goal with three seconds left to tie the game and send his Oakland Raiders ,into overtime with Atlanta. That was a mere 18 yards. Then the old boy doubled his pleasure and doubled his fun with a 36-yarder to win the game. A handy man to have around. AND MORE - / Here's a picture of some male nut at the Packer game -- topless on a cold, windy day. Take away the cameras and those nuts will go back into their shells. Most of us are getting anxious for the basketball season to start at the high school. The Warriors stirred up a lot of interest in the King Korn tournament and should provide a lot of thrills and chills before the season is over. Gary Collins brought his sophomore team through to victory in' the tournament at Sycamore. That sounds good for the future. Our time is so taken up^since retirement that it is hard Yo~ figure out when we had time to work. ; From all the appeal letters that come to our house, it begins to look like they are using our address for Santa Claus Cub fan Mary Ann at our Post Office might forward those letters, but we don't think so. She read that contribution of Murphyisms and thought it referred to our Post Office. How could she! Hadn't seen our friend Rovena Marshall for some time. Met her on Green St., Monday and forgot to mention that people were asking about her at the Illinois Bell shindig at Woodstock. They also asked about Lillian Stilling, another long time operator. Old operators may ring off lor retirement, but they don't fade away. There was a time when a man wouldn't be caught wearing oxfords in the Wintertime. High and higher shoes were the accepted footwear. Then came spats. Where did they go? Baseball. players and fans mourn the death of Nellie Fox, the peppery "Little Nell" who sparked the White Sox to a pennant in 1959. He could find a lot of ways to beat the opposition -- head, heart and hustle. The ner vous, jittery Mc Henry frosh fell behind 11 Ho 0 before they started to roll. A late second half rally felt short as the Warriors pulled up to within four trailing 43 to 39. But the young "Cats" iced the game with a bucket and four free throws for a 49 to 41 victory. Bentz led the locals with 19 pts. and 8 rebounds. Dean Howard Grapplers Defeat Lake Forest 44-12 Warriors At Barrington In North Suburban Cage Opener Tonight By Dick Rabbitt The "Rassling Warriors" of Coach Marty Sobczak turned on the power Tuesday night when they defeated Lake Forest 44 to 12. Matt Schuster at 112 lbs did everything but throw the kitchen sink at his opponent, winning 13 to 0. To the many in the crowd, Matt had his man pinned a couple of times but the official thought different. Don Freund lost to a tough opponent, Gaddin of Lake Forest. Gaddin last year was one of • the few who defeated Ken Scanlin of our Warriors. Karl Swanson pinned his man in 54 seconds, but not to be outdone Gre.g Thornton followed with a pin in 35 seconds to put the Warriors out of reach. Tommy Hutchinson followed suit with a pin in the third period, and after Tom Lundelius won on a forfeit, Bobby Seaton won with his second pin. in a row in the first period. BANK N0TE$ BY DONALD DALEY PRESIDENT FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF McHENRY/ The Public Speaks and Would you presume that our currency system is sensitive and reponsive to opinion and reaction of the "person on the street"? Well, it truly is ahdalways has been., here are just a few examples: Adoption of "In God We Trust" on all coin and paper money is the result of a letter from a citizen...N.R. Watkinson, Minister of the Gospel, Ridleyville, Pa., writing to Salmon P. Chase, Sec retary of the Treasury, Nov. 13, 1861. The Lib erty quarter of 1917 was redesigned to provide a greater degree of mod esty in covering the leg and upper torso on the figure of Liberty..-far too many people complained. The one-cent piece of 1793 carried on its' reverse a design of 15 links of chain, the des igner's intention being to symbolize the solidar ity of the then fifteen states. Citizens reacted negatively, thinking that the chain design was too representative of the Washington Hears "chains of bondage", a social. circumstance in Europe at the time and too well remembered by Americans...it was pro mptly changed to a wreath design. The Flying Eagle cent of 1857, the first cent not to carry a portrait of Lib erty, lasted but two years., the public didn't like it, they made their feelings known and a new cent, the famous Indian Head (Liberty in Indian headdress) was designed and put into circulation by 1859. Victor D. Brenner de signed the Lincoln penny (1909) and won wide ac claim for the particularly fine rendering of Lincoln, but on the reverse of the coin he had placed his three initials in a very prominent place....the public did not like that... almost immediately the initials were removed. This list of early examples is brief., over the years many cases affirm that op inions and sentiments of the people are heard and acted upon.
