On The Sidelines by Dick Rabbitt ; The football squad not to be outdone by their counterpart the Cross Country team also passed out some bouquets at their banquet. Co-Capts. Craig Smith and Guy Miller presented charms to the following young ladies, who happened to be the cheerleaders: Dawn Welch, Karen Day, Kristi Day, Cathy Pintozzi, Doreen Sturm, Sue Cable, Cathy Nellesen, Amy Leleux, Sue Wickenkamp, Patti Althoff, Patti Santi, and Kim Curry. A standing ovation was given to the genial trainer Earl Cooper who was also given an award, and also members of the coaching staff. Mike Shanahan's swimmers started off on the right foot with a big win over Elgin Larkin. The varsity squad is small in numbers, but big in heart. - The wrestlers of Marty Sobczak are coming along in good shape. They split in a double dual meet last Saturday. They handed Waukegan a 36 to 23 defeat, but were beaten by a strong Round Lake team. Marty is giving a lot of boys experience in these early meets, and when the conference season rolls around you can bet the Warriors will be ready.Their first conference meet is tonight when they host the Broncos from Barrington. First match is 6:45. Congratulations are in order to Coach Gary Collins and his sophomore cagers. They won the Kaneland sophomore tournament last weekend in fine style. I wonder where the nets camfe from that went along with the big trophy? As usual Bruce Peterson the Kaneland Athletic Director did another superb job in staging this tournament. Pete is the Kaneland track coach, winner of the Class A meet last spring. From all reports Pete has another powerhouse coming along this spring. They will be here next spring for the McHenry Relays. The Warriors put on another fine performance at the King Korn Tournament at Sycamore last weekend. After losing to a powerful West Aurora team, they came back with two wins and took consolation honors. Man for man the Blackhawks have to be one of the taller teams in the state. The Warriors are bigger than usual, but they can't compare to the West Aurora height. The North Suburban conference gets under way tonight. The Warriors travel to Barrington for their opener. From the looks of things this season it could be a wide open race for the crown. I'm sure this year no team will go undefeated during the conference season. Our Warriors along with Zion Benton, North Chicago, Libertyville and Crystal Lake seem like the cream of the crop. However, both Dundee and Barrington are much improved over last year, and it could go down to the final night of the season. Something will be missing tomorrow night when the Warriors play at Grant. John Schad for the first time in 14 years will be missing from the Grant bench. Schad gave up coaching last season, and it will be a loss to the coaching profession. John was a good coach, and his teams always showed it. He was very fundamental and win or lose the Bulldogs were always in the ball game. The sideline banter between Schad and Ken Ludwig will be missed by us who followed these two fine coaches. At times you would think that the game had four officials, with all the gestures and yelling from the benches. Yes, the Warriors and the Bulldogs will continue their rivalry, but to a lot of us it just won't be the same with John Schad not on the Grant bench.
