fl Grandma Sez . Here we be, launched into th' new year, wi' all th' excitement o' th' second century a com in't' an end, an' th* beginnin' o' th' third at hand. We wonder what th' future holds for our b'loved America, but me own reasonin' tells me, that we'll survive what-so-e'er providence may send our Way. We're a strangely unique sort, we Americans, wi' patience unsurpassed, wi' faith , that somehow, we're able t' wi'stand th' worst, an' come out on top o' th' heap. There's a strong self-confidence built into th' majority o' us, indomitable belief in our ability t' build an' rebuilds construct an' re construct, if need be. We look for'ard t' th' com in' elections, wi' hope that our leaders ha' learned lessons which may enable 'em t' govern us wi' better understandin' o' what is needed t' correct th' errors o' th' past. A sittin' here, rockin' away, in me ol' rockin' chair, me mind goes o'er th' years, past 'n gone. Like a panorama th' pictures pass, from president t' president, a seein', from me own reasoniif, th' steps which ha' brought us t' these problems we bear. Seems t' many o' us, experienced in years o' livin', that wise men may ha' been able t' see, as many o' us did, th' errors which i New member* of 8hepherd of the HiUs Lutheran church, pictured left to right, front row, are Pastor Arthur Knudsen, Irene Tice, Edith Knudsen, George Anderson, Colleen Bringie, Violet Bringle, Mabel Gnadt and Jackie Smith; second row, Judy White, Susan Reeves, Jody Reeves and Patty Beeves; third row, Robert StoH, Bertha StoH and Pastor Roger W. Seems that much careful ad ministration o' th' power, wi' which we ha' endowed those, who hold the destiny o' our coUntry in th' palm o' their hands, must be observed, in order t' preserve th' freedom, to which we've fallen heir. No other gover'ment has been so graciously endowed, an' folks'd be wise, t' not take it f'r granted, f'r th' reason that we may lose this wonderful gift o' freedom, an' our way o' life, wi' careless inconsideration o' th' facts. This country wouldn't exist t'day, if folks depended on support from th' government, while unemployed. There's enough work f'r ever'body, if folks weren't picayunish about th' wages. We need t' get back t' bein' able an' willin', t' work f'r what folks 're able t' pay. Where'd we be, this day, if folks had th' attitude they have now- a-days, in days when this country was in its infancy. It ain't so long ago that a body'd be glad t' work, happy t' have a job t' do. We, all, need t' be willin't' put th' shoulder to th' wheel, wi'out considerin' if we're a gettin' th' top dollar f'r th' labor. Folks don't realize that many o' th' problems we face, in flation, recessions, an' Iioooooeoooooooooooc Hospital Notes i MOOOOPOPOOOOaOOOOOO 3 reception in honor of the new members will be held in the fireside room in the near future. We need t' take a hard look at ouraelvee. an' see our faults. We've allowed ourselves t* be led into sitiations which 're a goodly part responsible f'r th' high cost o' living'. There ain't any profit in raisin' income, when each time it happens, th' coat o' livin' increases along wi' it. Folks don't seem t' realize that th' higher th' wages, th' greater th' cost o' pervidin' th' things, necessary t' life, these days. Our dollars bought more, in times past, 'n they do t'day, an' things ain't a goin't* get better, until things level off, an' th' balance o' economy evens up. There ain't any profit in in creased wages, f'r th' reason that it only throws another spoke in th' wheels o' th* economy. We're in need o' some smart fellers, t' some standards in competitive business. There ne'er will be any relief, if we allow ourselves t' fall into th' hands o' large, corporationally controlled business. We've seen th' warnin' effects o' that, in our large oil companies, con- trollin' th' fuel supplies. Where 're th' enterprisin' Americans, interested in protectin' this great country, an' what it stands for. We need help from people like that, t' put us back on th' pedestal, from which we've fallen, in th' eves o' th' other governments, in this ol' world. May this new century see us started on th' road back, t' our state o' presitge an' honor, an' when that next birthday comes around, wi' God's help, may we Americans be able t' sit back an' say, "WE MADE IT."
