"Reading, 'ritMg and 'rith* metic," the old saying goes, "taught to the tune of a hickory stick." Most adults remember chanting this rhyme as a child whether or not they ever ac tually felt that hickory stick. Somehow the rhyme makes learning seem very unpleasant, and for many, it was. It also seems to project learning as memorizing, with no thought about learning why and how things happen. ILLINOIS ORNSBYS fami ly centers^^* RT. 47 A CNTRY. CLB. RD WOODSTOCK. ILLINOIS Today's students still learn to add and subtract, multiply and divide, and most of the other things their parents were taught. But todiay there is an added dimension. Arithmetic has become mathematics in the elementary school curriculum, and this is a significant dif ference. As the World Book dictionary defines the words, arithmetic is "...the art of practice of computing with n u m b e r s . . . , ' ' w h i l e mathematics is "...the science of dealing with the measurement, properties, and relationships of quantities, as expressed in numbers and symbols." Thus today children are learning the basic skills. There is another difference between today and the day of the hickory stick. As a result of creativity on the part of teachers and others, "games" have developed which make learning the basic skills more stimulating than the old methods of drill. It is impossible to remove all the unpleasantness from some necessary learning processes - learning the multiplication tables for example. However, the more stimulating a teacher can make learning experiences the greater the possibility that students will approach them with a positive attitude. „ WHAT ABOUT METRICS? The Illinois Office of Education has mandated that metrics will be the primary system for teaching mathematics by next year. Our students have been exposed to varying amounts of the metric system at various grade levels for several years. This year, the district has of fered numerous workshops, college courses, etc., so that teachers may become proficient in teaching the metric way. PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER..What is the mathematics in District 15? Is it drill? Is it learning concepts? Is it preparing for higher education and the adult world? Yes, it is all of these things. Basic skills and concepts are taught to all children from the time they enter school. It is important that students learn to develop sufficient conceptual knowledge to analyze a situation, transfer it into mathematical format, com pute, and transfer the result back into terms of the real world. As the Conference board of the Mathematical Sciences National Advisory Committee on Mathematical Education said in a recent publication, "In the creation, introduction, and support of mathematics programs, neither teachers, educational administrators, parents, nor the general public should allow themselves to be manipulated into false choices between: the old and the new in mathematics, skills and con cepts, the concrete and the a b s t r a c t , . . . s t r u c t u r e a n d problem solving... The core of every mathematics program should contain a judicious combination of both elements of each pair..." It is the district's aim to help students learn the basic skills and the concepts they will need to go on to high school and also to function competently in the world in which they live. Ancient man rode the donkey, while Wifey held the tail. Maybe that was the origin of our back-seat driving.
