PAGE 7 SUPPLEMENT TO THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 1976 Storm windows pay for themselves: install them and save up a storm! Here's one which is guaranteed to stump your friends: What can you buy which will contribute greatly to the comfort and llveability of your home -- and which will pay for itself? There are precious few items which fit in this cat egory, but Frank Gorell likes to cite the product he manufactures and backs up his claim with official Government figures. Frank Gorell is presi dent of Season-all Indus tries, Inc., the world's largest makers of custom storm windows and doors and replacement windows. "If you don't own storm windows," he says, "you're paying for them, whether you realise it or not, in the form of heat loss." The U.S. Government puts it just -as bluntly: "Storm windows will cut in half the heat that is needlessly lost through the windows of your house." While every homeowner knows that the jump in his fuel bills has been "dramatic," perhaps not as many are aware that the payout period for an investment in storm win dows has been shrinking steadily. The National Bureau of Standards used to esti mate that an investment in storm windows would pay for itself within a decade, and thereafter re turn an annual dividend of 13% or more on the investment. This applied to areas where the aver age winter temperature was 45°F; for colder cli mates, the payout was es timated at less than seven years with an annual re turn of 18% or more. Since oil prices have gone up considerably since these estimates were made, the Federal Energy Office has now cut its estimates of the payout time to four years for storm windows and five years for storm doors. Ob viously, as fuel prices go up even more, then these figures will have to be revised downward once more. Another "hidden" main tenance cost is frequently overlooked by homeo\ ers, who feel that the! fuel bills stop when thej shut down their heating plants in the spring. The use of air conditioners, whether the window type or a central system, is ^ | - ^ A J:::-- . •/ WAINSCOT KIT -- Every thing you need to wainscot u 12-foot wall is included in the new Marlite wainscot kit, which retails for under $40. Four different types of Mar- lite plank are available the kit. An easy way to give a room a "new look** over more expensive than it has ever been -- again thanks to soaring fuel bills. Here, once more, the use of storm windows and doors will cut heat gain in summer and effectively reduce the load on the cooling system, cutting fuel bills. Storm windows and doors go to work, as soon as they are installed, on the job of cutting fuel bills -- winter and sum mer. And that's precisely what Frank Gorell means when he asks, "What can you buy which will con tribute greatly to the comfort and llveability of your home -- and which will pay for itself?"
