Rte. 120 McHenry Phone 385-4619 Help is here for DIYs A current American phenomenon is the re birth of the homeowner who handles his own re pairs. And it has spawned a new acronym that is gain ing a strong foothold in the language -- DIY, for do-it-yourself. Today's DIYer is one who has the good sense to do for himself those things not requiring spe cialized technical knowl edge, and which will help him stretch his budget. Doing it yourself, how ever, does not necessarily mean going it alone. Help is available to the DIYer in the form of a variety of instruction manuals, . installation kits, how-to- advice clinics, handbooks, plans and the like. For example, General Electric is making it eas ier for home handymen to replace out-of-date kitchen appliances. The latest DIY aid is an illustrated six-page . book ft>r replacing a food waste disposer. It provides step- by-step instructions and diagrams on how to han dle the electrical and plumbing work. And GE even has changed the de sign of three models to simplify their installation. • Another self-help is a replacement dishwasher installation kit which pro vides instructions, parts, materials and special tools needed to install a new GE model. The kit retails for $14.95, but en ables the homeowner to do a job that might other wise cost $40-$60. Upholstery maintenance Upholstered furniture adds warmth and beauty, to any home, and with some simple, basic care, it can stay attractive-looking for years. * Many people tend to overlook upholstered fur niture during the course of .their regular cleaning routine. This is an unfor tunate mistake because, although the soil is not as readily visible, uphol stered furniture collects just as much dust and grime as the tops of wood or even glass tables. Neg lecting it allows gritty dirt particles to wear away and discolor the * furni ture's fabric -- creating a stale odor in the process. To maintain your up holstered furniture, vac uum it regularly using the appropriate attachment from your vacuum cleaner. Be sure to get into the seams and tufts where dust can build up. Remove spots and spills as soon as possible. Spills usually sponge right up with a bit of water and a rubdown with a clean, dry doth. And many stains can be as easy to remove with a spray of K2r® Spot- lifter. Just apply K2r to the soiled area, let dry to a fine white powder and then brush or vacuum the powder -- and the spot -- away. . . If you have down-stuffed cushions, use an uphol stery brush instead of a vacuum to clean 'them. Vacuuming will pull the feathers through the fab- dc, and you 11 have to spend hours plucking •• them out.
