STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Eastwood Manor Mary Ann Bellak 385-5705 Church Break-In Second This Month Faith Presbyterian church was broken into either Feb. 29, on Sunday night or early Monday morning, March 1. Nothing was taken, however a communion plate was damaged, and door locks were broken. This has been the second robbery at Faith church in the past three months. Pastor Jack Mclntyre of Faith church, and also a local resident of Eastwood Manor, asked me to write in my column the following information: There is never any money in the church! The Sunday of fering is banked immediately and there is never any money left in the offices. Shortly before this robbery had taken place, a few cars parked in the church parking lot had been also broken into, and glove compartments had been gone through. Please, once again, might I stress to keep your cars locked when left out overnight for youi? own protection, this was not the first time for such an occurence in our subdivision. Financial assistance to help farmers and farm land owners establish a forest of trees for timber production, windbreaks and environmental im provement is available. Help is also available to plant those trees, but the deadline is coming fast -March 15 for financial assistance from the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service of the USD A Robert Fleck, president of the McHenry County Soil and Water Conservation districtt has called attention to the availability of trees as he reported the district has a tree planter service available at established prices. A wide selection of seedlings are still available for spring planting, and seedling order forms can be obtained at the district's office on North Seminary street, Woodstock. Jim Lucas of the, ASCS said the USDA is making funds available to encourage farmers to plant trees. The ASCS will share costs up to $36 an acre to plant trees and up to $24 an acre for land preparation, or 50 percent of the actual costs. That financial help represents a sizable portion of the total cost. Fleck pointed out, and he said a large number of farmers each year take advantage of this conservation and environmental im provement program. "However, we believe a great many more farmers would take advantage of this conservation and forestry program if they knew about it, so we are asking the help of the county new* media 'o communicate this fact to farmers Throughout the years, our information about conservation and best land use has been expanded through the county press, and this seedling program is a major effort on our part to improve McHenry county's land " PUiE • - PLAINDEAURR Here are a few of the seedlings available Autumn Olive. Naturalist Will Present River Program Saturday evening, March 13, the McHenry County Audubon chapter will present a program entitled "Canoeing the Fox River." The speaker will be Peter Dring, president of the Illinois Audubon society and director of the Little Red School House Nature center. The program, open to the public, will be held at the Elks lodge, Throop and Cass streets, Woodstock, at 8 p.m. The hour long program is a combination of several Spring and Fall canoe trips made by Dring. There are beautiful slides of the river, its sand bluffs and islands. While narrating his slides, he in troduces the viewers to many of the various mammals, birds, reptiles and insects that have been seen along the river, and takes the viewers on a short trip along a creek that leads to a beautiful waterfall. Typical vegetation and wildlfowers are also shown. The presentation is a good introduction to the ecology of a river and will be enjoyed by anyone interested in nature, the Fox River or canoeing. There is no charge for admission. The mind of a child is like a narrow-necked bottle-it takes plenty of contents, in little drops, but a large dose will spill out and be wasted.
