"The outbreaks of measles * ace occurring primarily in the northern part of the state," she said, "and the majority of the cases are occurring in children of junior high and high school age." • ' "Many children in this age group," Dr. Lashof explained, "either have not been im munized against measles, or were vaccinated with the inactivated, or killed-virus vaccine which was generally given before 1967. This vaccine is not as effective as the live- virus vaccine in use since the end of 1966." The state health department is working closely with local health departments, physicians and school officials in the af fected areas. Outbreak con tainment clinics are being conducted, and in the Whiteside - Henry - Bureau County area, where more than 50 cases have been reported, 10,000 children ages one through high-school, have been immunized. Dr. Lashof advised parents to have unimmunized children vaccinated as soon as possible. "If your children receved measles vaccine before 1967," she added, "the probability is that they were given the inactivated vaccine, and should be re-immunized." Dr. Lashof noted that measles is not a harmless childhood odisease. "Many children are left with hearing, vision of mental deficiencies as a result of measles," she said. "Having your children im munized is the one way to assure thery will not suffer from the tragic consequences of this disease." Measles immunization can be obtained from a private physician or from a local health department. Persons who cannot see a private physician and who live in an area where there is no local health department should contact the Illinois Department of Public Health, Immunization Program. 535 West Jefferson, Springfield, IL.. 62761. recently and brought home the following honors: West Campus First division soloists: Scott Chesler, vocal; Cathy Byers, horn; Joy Vyduna, vocal; W. brett Jackson, vocal.
