Wed., Mar. 24,1976) Winter Wheat Acreage Largest In Past 27 Years U.S. farmers increased winter wheat plantings to 57.2 million acres for 1976, despite faltering prices and dry con ditions in some areas. Ac cording to USDA's latest wheat report, this was 2 percent above last year's and the largest planted acreage since 1949. Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Arkansas led the increases with 37 percent, 29 percent, 27 percent, respec tively, over 1975. Plantings increased or were constant in 20 states and fell in 22 states. Th*afr« Group Pntintation In Last Two Wookonds Pam Messel of McHenry, as Leslie Maugham, rehearses a scene from "The Girl in the Freudian Slip", to be presented March 19, 20. 26 and 27 at the McHenry Country club. Winter wheat production is forecast at 1,496 million bushels, 9 percent below last year's record large crop. The smaller estimate in the face of increased acreage is the result of lower predicted yields and harvesting rate. Dry conditions are expected to lower the winter wheat harvest to around 87 percent compared with 92 percent in 1975. As of Dec. 1, much of the Great Plains area was still suffering from dryness. Since then, topsoil conditions ha vie improved although subsoil moisture is still in short supply. Improved moisture conditions generally have not resulted in improved top growth because of unusually cold weather. Lack of adequate snow cover has caused concern over the possibilities of winterkill and wind erosion in some locations. The American Repertory Theatre system's dinner- theatre production of "The Girl in the Freudian Slip" is in its last two weekends at the McHenry Country club. Auditions for the next offering, "Butterflies are Free", will be held at the same location. When a man is young and a bachelor and moves into his own apartment for the first time, even if it's a cramped cold-water flat, he knows what exhilaration is. And if a pretty actress moves into the apart ment next door, it's even a better beginning. Don had it better, the actress proposed true friendship, the breaking oF all barriers and th^ removal of the connecting door. He is also escaping a well meaning but over-protective mother and trying to go it alone, learning whether or not he has the talent to become a song writer. Of course, mother and girl meet, and the two simply do not mix at all. Mother succeeds in breaking up the match when the actress packs herself off to live with a Broadway director. But then mother realizes how she has demoralized her son, and wishes the other woman were now back in his life. In comdey, of course, wishes can come true. Auditions for "Butterflies Are Free" will be conducted from 8:30 to 11 p.m. March 18 and 25. To. make reservations for the current show, "The Girl In The Freudian Slip", directed by Barbara D. Miller, or to arrange for a personal in terview interested persons may call 815-675-2066 days or write to A.R.T.S., Box 542, McHenry. | SERVICE NEWS | McHenry Youth Enlists In Air Force Program Mark Blankschen of 814 Southside avenue, McHenry, has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force's Delayed Enlistment program, according to Staff Sergeant Steve Loy, Air Force recruiter, working at McHenry » County college.
