This man is protected from a shwking experience because his hedge trimmer is plugged into a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) receptacle made by General Electric. The GFCI will detect a ground fault and shut off the current before injury or electrocutibn can occur. Electronic eliminates If you forget to mow your lawn or trim your hedge and the neighbors complain, it's your fault. But if you get a shock while mowing your lawn or trimming your hedge with an electrical tool, it's probably a ground fault. Most electrical shocks from ground faults are caused by careless use of electricity or by break down of insulation on elec trical tools or appliances, especially when used in wet or damp areas. You can protect yourself against shocks caused by ground faults with a new electronic device called a ground fault circuit inter rupter, or GFCI. A current flow as small as 11 milliamps can freeze you to a power source, and a current as low as 380 device shocks milliamps, or one-third of one ampere, can be fatal. GFCI's trip at 5 milli amps, which protects you , against becoming uninten-Jf tionally a part of the cir cuit while the current seeks a path to ground. Conventional household fuses and circuit breakers, which are designed to pro tect house wiring only, trip at current levels in excess of their normal am pere ratings. According to General Electric, GFCI circuit breakers are used in new home construction, par ticularly for bathroom and outdoor receptacle cir cuits, while a variety of GFCI receptacles now available are ideal for in stalling ground fault pro tection in and aro'und existing older homes.
