J>M t MARTY ZELLER ROSWELL: Two 1975 McHenry High graduates were on the New Mexico Military Institute Bronco junior college basketball squad which rewrote the school record books in the course of stampeding to the Broncos' best season ever, a 22-8 finish and the semi-finals of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region V Tournament. Forward Marty Zeller won the important number-six-man slot in the course of the season on the merit of his strong board play and ball handling ability. An all-conference, all-area, all- state player for McHenry, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Zeller of 702 South Route 31, McHenry, Illinois, has con tinued to improve sharply in the competitive Western Junior College Athletic Conference. At 6-5" and 200 he has matched up well against taller, biggermen KENNE LUDWIG in even his first year of collage ball. Guard Kenne Ludwig, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Ludwig of 4421 South Street, McHenry, is actually a two- sports man this year for the Broncos. A talented golfer, Kenne also saw action in eight Bronco games this season. He is continuing to excel in academics, just as he did at McHenry where, as a five-sport letterman and basketball team co-captain, he had an excellent scholar-athlete career. Zeller is doing well academically at NMMI, where he is majoring in Business Adminstration. He had his best games of the year against Trinidad State and the nation's leading offensive power, Howard College. Marty netted 14 points against Trinidad in defense of Cahoon Armory on Janury 7th and 13 against Howard County in a January 29th home-court contest. EARL WALSH So I Hear U's all over in high school basketball until another season roils along. That finish in the state tournament was something a Hollywood script writer couldn't dream up. Aurora West had the game wpn, then flubbed it away. ^he Morgan Park boys must have what it takes. They won tl\eir first game by 5 points, the semi-finals by 1 point-- then another 1 pointer in the finals. Tliey won the close ones. -- ^We close out the season with sQme thoughts and reflections. $ Those fouls! Still think some changes are -SPORTS EDITOR J in order. Fans would like to see full strength in at the finish. Players should practice free throws in season and out. There used to be an unwritten law in the sportsmanship code that kept the crowd quiet while an opposing player was shooting a free throw. Fouls in the back court are foolish. So are reach-around fouls. Can't fault a player from going high to block a shot. Trouble is it doesn't matter if you have a hand on the ball or not it seems to be an automatic foul. Notice Spoils Pictures Since previous notices (starting last fall) have not been noted, this will be run from time to time. Being unable to use the many group pictures sent in, a decision was made to discontinue all league groups except cham pionship teams. Pictures taken by our staff photographers of athletes on the high school level will be selected as to their importance. Individual pictures of various sports will be appraised as to their newsworthy value and available space. It was a flood of group pictures last year that made this decision by the management necessary. state tournament, it was ob vious that players who moved out to take passes didn't suffer interceptions that befell those who stood flat footed and waited. Our Warrior guards could bring the ball across the line when the full court press was on. Some play makers couldn't- - and mates didn't come to their rescue. There is some comfort in the fact that McHenry lost to a state finalist one that should have taken the title. Now we would like to see a couple of high school baseball games if the sun will shine. That was the week that was. Busing came to McHenry, but it was to haul hundreds of students and followers to tournament games. Of course, the week was topped off with a St. Patrick's Day celebration. Things were going along pretty good at O'Bimbo's when A Salute To The Warriors By Dick Rabbitt Many fine things have been said about the McHenry Warriors during the past two weeks, but I think it was all summed up last Wednesday morning when Mr. Robert Swartzloff Principal of West Campus made a brief an nouncement during the morning homeroom period. I would like to share with all of you this announcement which I feel expresses the feelings of the entire McHenry community. Elsewhere on these pages you will find a poem that was given to me about the Warriors., The author is unknown to me, but I suspect it was from a student. Good Morning! It is not my purpose to make any kind of a long speech this morning, but I do feel it is necessary to briefly express the feelings of a great many people in our school and community. The McHenry Warriors may- have socred fewer points yesterday afternoon at the DeKalb Super-Sectional than their opponents-but by no stretch of the imagination were they "losers". No Way! If we stop to think and reflect about what has happened over the last two weeks, it is apparent that our team came out of yesterday's game a real "winner" for their school and community. They were "winners" all the way and can feel a real sense of pride in their accomplishment. Why were they winners? Because winning means success and our team was successful in: 1) being one of the 16 best basketball teams in the State of Illinois. 2) not only winning the first Sectional game, but in winning the first Sectional cham- pionship and playing in the finals of the State Tournament for the only time in the school's history. 3) uniting not only our school for a common purpose, but the entire community as well. 4) providing the school and community with an experience we shall never forget. It was something that very few schools are ever fortunate enough to experience. We have it to remember and treasure for the rest of our lives. 5) displaying the highest level of good sportsmanship and fair play- and they set an example for our student body and community to follow. 6) providing all of us with a great deal of fun and en joyment-something we need very much in our hectic lives. 7) giving us yesterday-a day which we will never forget. The Pep Rally, the spirit, the decorations, the 2,300 cheering fans, the 22-bus caravan, the bands, the two schools being together, the excellent conduct of all McHenry students-East and West, the excellent cooperation of the teachers and staffs of both schools, the fun, the excitement, the thrill of being in the "Sweet 16." .And so you can now see why the young men who represented our school at DeKalb yesterday came off of that basketbal floor at the end of the game as winners. They can and should hold their heads up high and feel very proud of themselves. So can every person in the school feel that sense of pride, for we all con tributed to it and were a part of it. It was all worthwhile. We are grateful. All I can say to the team this morning is "thank you" for giving our school and community this "winning" experience. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. During the last three years this powerful team has walked away with most of the trophies. Their toughest competition has come from the Woodstock girls, who unable to win the big ones, have dropped out of the league looking for greener pastures in another league. That they did! Under the table was a green carpet. On top was a table cloth befitting the day. * As the party progressed, out came a cake decorated with colors and emblems of the day. As if we didn't have enough green with a high hat, green cane and all the trimmings, along came Eddie O'Bimbo to place a green lei around our neck. Straight from Hawaii was that lei. There was singing. There was dancing. There was fun in the air. And 'twas all in honor of that great Saint of Ireland. Another staunch McHenry resident, Carl (Charlie) Freund, who spent his 77 years here, was called to his Maker last week. Charlie was a conscientious tradesman and one who led a good christian life --a solid man. We never thought of him as an Old Timer until he died. In fact, we never thought of him as getting old. Hope they have good fishing up there, Charlie. We know it was a favorite sport of yours. MCHENRYSCHOOL LEAGUE 3-10-76 The McHenry School League may not be able to draw crowds as the Warriors do, or generate the same kind of excitement, but we are still in the battle. "Spare Parts" should find it fairly easy to maintain their lead for the next 3 week as their opposition is from the latter half; however upsets are possible, and no one is calling it quits. Tim O'Toole rolled a "smashing" 218 for high game (don't mention his second game to him, tho), and Walt Coari took high series with a 574. Barb Miller beat B.Thompson by 7 pins with,a 179 for high game, and Elaine Rogers racked up a 472 for high series. Splits were hard to come by and only Roy Homo (4-9) and Lyle Luzum (5-7) had any. Only 3 week of regular bowling and then the "FUN NIGHT" on April 7th, and we will close out this season. MCHENRY SCHOOL LEAGUE 3-17-76 Although there was a lot of "The Wearin' Of the Green', it didn't help everyone and certainly made things at the top a lot hotter. One-half games separates first and second place, and that is no edge for comfort. With only 2 weeks of regular bowling left, I am glad all I have to worry about is staying out of the cellar. A1 Boeldt had his heart set on taking over first place for high series and really gave it a try by taking high game of the week with a 198 and high series with a 553. Lauretta Homo got a 170 for high game and Elaine Rogers totaled a 482 for the high series. 'Martha Kangas was delighted with the 3-7 split she picked off, and Roy Homo liked the feel of clearing off the 6-7 split, while Elaine Rogers added to her glories by taking care of the 5-10.
