About two months ago a family that owned a pair of Bassett Hounds moved from Lake in the Hills to Cflpiintersville. Hie pete wer^scheduled for the last trip _ from the old house. When their ^wri^returned for them, they were/both gone and her sear- ches*turned up nothing. If only she'sh4d checked the county shelter! At just about that time two Bassett Hounds were brought in to the shelter as strays. When time passed and they weren't claimed, they were offered for adoption, One was adopted and taken ffom the shelter. Then the sedlitd 'bhe was ad6pt*d, , but latjflr returned to the shelter as it Was found he did not get ajfong>with the other jXt^nJiis new household. So onw TJM»re Mo. 2 was offered foivadbptlon, hjet picture takeri'/and used in a couple of newspapers in the county.. The original owner of the two Bassett Hounds was employed. Ond day a co-worker happened to bring in a copy of the newspaper with the dog's picture, and she showed it to her friend. The original owner immediately recognized her dog and went to the county shelter and claimed him. She could have recovered both dogs if she had acted immediately after the loss by checking the county shelter. But since No. 1 was formally adopted she had lost her claim to him. If anyone loses a pet, please, please remember to check right away with the county shelter, or, brief them so they will have a record of your loss and can contact you if the pet is brought in. Helping Paws maintains an office staffed by volunteers, open Monday through Friday from 10 to noon, and from one to 3. Phone 459-2641. Listing your lost animal with them is also a good idea. The oranization has helped to recover many a lost pet. And those who are found, in a great many cases, are restored to their owners. MtMRf * FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 25, 1926) Ray McGee, the popular McHenry clothier, announces in the advertising columns of this week's issue of the Plaindealer that he will carry the famous Hart Schaffner and Marx suits and top coats for men. It is safe to say that this is the best known line of men's ready to wear clothing sold in the United States today. The McGucken and Vander Heyden company is back in McHenry and expects to resume work on the paving of the streets. Green, Pearl and Waukegan. Miss Evelyn Thurwell, daughter of Mrs. Anna Thurlwell of McHenry, and Mr. Walter Patzke of McHenry were united in marriage March 20 at the parsonage of Rev. H. A. Laufer at Woodstock.. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Patzke were the attendants. The McHenry Kiwanis club has invited as its guests for Saturday evening, the two high school basketball teams that (Hayed in the district tour­ nament. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 26, 1936) A big political meeting has been scheduled by the McHenry Township Republican committee to be held in the Bridge ballroom, McHenry, on Tuesday evening, March 31. Two of the best speakers in Illinois will address the audience, being C. Wayland Brooks, candidate for the nomination for governor on the Republican primary ballot and the Hon. "Dick" Lyons, the Eighth district's representative in the Illinois general assem­ bly. William J. Stratton,. candidate for secretary of state, will also have a message. The McHenry Junior college, now well launched on its second semester of educational work, has proved itself to be a real success, is an assured fact and prospects are bright for a continuation of this project, which will probably become a permanent institution in connection with the local community high school The Junior college is a WPA project which was commenced here at the beginning of the school year last September. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Zvonar and their two children, Paul and Rosemary, are quaran­ tined at their home in Chicago with scarlet fever. Mrs. Zvonar is the former Miss Rosina Freund of McHenry. H.C. Hughes has purchased the Mrs. Martin S. Freund farm on Route 20, west of town. The farm is tenated by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Weber. C.H. Duker, superintendent of the community high school, and several students par­ ticipated in the program for the meeting of the P.T.A. at Ringwood Friday evening. Supt. Duker was the guest speaker. Bob Hapke gave a cornet solo; Louise Stilling, a marimba solo and Bob Kilday and Adele Froehlich delivered a speech prepared in Public Speaking class. Adele spoke on "Switzerland" and Bob talked on "The Blackhawk Rebellion". TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 5, 1951) One thousand, six hundred and ten McHenry township voters went to the polls Tuesday to elect Miller, Smith and Hallstrom. Lt. Gloria E. McCafferty, Army Nurse corps, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mc­ Cafferty of Spring Grove, is at Brooke army medical center, For Sam Houston, Texas, completing basic military training in the woman officer's basic* course at medical field service school. She will report to Camp Chaffee, Ark. The McHenry Sportsmen's club will hold a shoot on Sun­ day, April 8, on the beautiful new club grounds at Pistakee Bay. Mrs. B.J. Brefeld, 79, passed away at her home on Green street Saturday evening. Major Norman E. Blomgren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis A. Blomgren, Sr., of Pistakee Bay, has recently been assigned as commanding officer of headquarters and headquar­ ters squadron of the Fourth Air force, at Hamilton AFB. During World War II, Major Blomgren piloted B-24's with the 449th Bomb group, fifteenth Air Force in Italy. He also served in Panama. Eighth grade pupils of the public grade school were guests at a party given last Friday, in the Legion home, with Howard Useman of Lake Defiance as host. The boys were attired as cowboys and the girls in full skirts and blouses. Square dancing and different games were the entertainment. The caller for the square dancing was Mr. Useman's father, Ernie Useman. TEN YEARS AGO One of the most tragic ac­ cidents of the year in the McHenry community occurred last Wednesday evening, taking the life of one-year-old Roger Lee Marunde on his first bir­ thday. The youngster, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Marunde, drowned when he fell into a semi-sunken bath tub in the family home. The regular monthly meeting / of the McHenry barracks of the Veterans of World War I will be held April 14, with a dinner preceding the discussion. The date commemorates the forty- ninth anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I. Chris Newkirk, a sophomore at the University of Illinois, is on the 1966 varsity golf squad. Fri ,Mar 26.1976) Legal Notice McHenry Shores Ordinance No. 2.7 BUILDING CODE GRADING AMENDMENT ORDINANCE BE IT ORDAINED BY THE PRESIDENT AND THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE OF McHENRY S H O R E S , M c H E N R Y COUNTY, ILLINOIS, AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1: Article one section 110, paragraph B, is. amended to include: FINISH GRADING OF NEW CONSTRUCTION Every ap­ plication for a building permit shall show the foundation grade and the -finish grade of the lot for each elevation of the building. Floor line elevations and existing grade elevations of all four property corners shall be shown on the plans. These elevations shall use as a bench mark the elevation of the in­ tersection of the road cen- terline and the driveway centerline. SECTION 2: Article 3, sec­ tion 303 is amended to include: The actual finish grade line must provide a minimum of 3'6" of soil or fill for frost protection at any point away from the footing. All foundation and finish grades shall be established in such a manner as to achieve the free natural and unobstructed flow of surface water. Further all finish grades will be established in such a manner as to carry any water shed from any gutters, downspouts, overhangs, roofs, or sump pumps away from any septic installation and in such a manner as not to drain onto any abutting lot. The maximum slope of the finish grade shall not exceed one foot of fill for each two feet of horizontal measurement. For slopes exceeding this amount, retaining walls must be built in a manner approved by the Building and Zoning Officer. CONFORMING WITH LOT GRADING PLAN If during construction of any building, the Building and Zoning Officer finds that non-conformity with the lot grading plan on file is causing or is likely to cause flooding of any adjoining lot, such Officer may issue an order stopping all work on such building. No Occupancy permit ap­ proval of new construction shall be issued or given by the Building and Zoning Officer unless and until all grade requirements set forth in these articles have been met. BUILDING FOUNDATIONS Foundation walls, exposing concrete or concrete block, shall extend at least six inches above but not more than twelve inches above the finished grade adjacent to the foundation at all points. Any facing material used to cover foundation walls must match materials covering house or have the approval of the Building and Zoning Of­ ficer. Foundations for all buildings where the grade slopes shall be stepped to minimize foundation wall exposure.
