Allphin. Allphin said there are some taxpayers each year who discover a need to change a tax return after it has been filed. And that can be done by filing an IL-1040X, the form used for amending earlier returns. The IL-1040X is available by writing the department's Taxpayer Services Division, Box 2844, Springfield, 111., 62708, or by calling the department at 641-2150 in Cook county or 800-252-8972, a toll- free number, elsewhere in ..Illinois. The director *said taxpayers could avoid errors by: -Checking to see that their social security number has been entered correctly. -Double-checking arith metic. --Making sure they have taken advantage of all the exemptions to which they are entitled. < \ \< >\.
