PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, APRIL t. I97C Candidates For School Boards DISTRICT 15 Anna Mae Cuda Anna Mae Cuda of 3911 Clearbrook avenue, McHenry, has filed for a three-year term on the grade school board. She and her huaband, Charles, have lived in the McHenry area twenty-five years with their two sons. Mrs. Cuda, a housewife and part-time secretary, is a high school graduate and has taken various business courses at Junior college. r She previously served for six years on the grade school board. • * Mrs. Cuda is an auxiliary member of the American Legion and McHenry hospital. ' Major Problems ' "State financing - School districts are required by the state to •provide various special kinds of programs which are not adequately funded. Consequently, local boards must cut back on ' some programs or not adopt others in order to finance the state required programs. Transportation is also a problem - .maintenance is very costly." '* *' Ideas For Meeting Them "Better legislation - Local districts should have more of a choice where the money should be budgeted, knowing where the needs are greatest in the local school district. Transportation costs could be lowered if the district could operate the buses completely within the jurisdiction of the district - garaging maintenance, fuel, etc., all handled by the district. That's easier said than done." M.DAVID CAIN Seeking another term on the grade school board is M. David Cain of-3331 Bayview lane, McHenry. Lester L. Smith of 311 N. Green street, McHenry, is seeking re election to the grade school board for another three-year term. He has served four years on this board. A lifetime resident of McHenry, Smith graduated from McHenry schools and attended the University of Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Smith is employed as a long range planner for G.T.E. Automatic Electric Late. He is an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts and American Legion. Smith and his wife, Betty, are the parents of five children. Major Problems \ "Major problem is the loss of public confidence in education due to current world economic and social problems. Current educational practices are being criticized but the public fails to realize that a majority of current labor, government and business leaders graduated from elementary schools twenty-five or more years ago." Ideas For Meeting Them "If re-elected, I. will continue to support the District 15 administration's current educational philosophy which stresses basics, humanism and relationships between man and his environment. Continuance of this program will enable the student to better cope with this rapidly changing world." DISTRICT 156 James L. Althoff James L. Althoff of 508 N. Green street, McHenry, is seeking his third three-year term on the high school board. He is serving at this time as president of the board. A lifetime resident of McHenry, Althoff attended McHenry schools and graduated from MCHS. He is president of Althoff Industries and is actively associated With the McHenry Township Fire Protection district as a trustee. He is also trustee of the Plumbers Welfare fund, past board member for the Girl Scouts, board member for Illinois Mechanical Contractors and member of the Illinois Citizens' Advisory Council for the Illinois Office of Education. Althoff and his wife, Joan are the parents of seven children. Comments "One of thelnajor problems facing the school district is the two- campus system. Somehow these two buildings must be combined which will provide the student with a greatly improved educational experience. Additionally, there are some significant financial savings in the operation ot one school versus two schools. Another problem is the upcoming separation of District 12 from the McHenry Community high school system. Last, but certainly not least, is the ever increasing cost of education. All school board members should dedicate themselves to buying the best possible education for the student with the dollars available. It is time that we as citizens re-emphasized the so-called three 'R's." DAN McNULTY Dan McNulty of 2004 N. Woodlawn Park, McHenry, is seeking a one year term on the high school board to fill the unexpired term of Phillip Bartmann who has resigend because he now resides in District 12 which will be operating its own high school district. McNulty, who is a TV news editor, has lived in the McHenry area for eight years with his wife and two children. He is a graduate of Villanova university, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. McNulty served as co-chairman of the District 156 Long Range Planning committee and taught a course in communications at McHenry County college. Major Problems "Generally, providing the best quality education possible with the funds available. Specifically, manage the orderly withdrawal of students from the new Johnsburg District and prepare for operation of the high school with reduced enrollments." Ideas For Meeting Them "1. Continuous reevaluation of the curriculum. 2. Maximum utilization of physical facilities and 3. Explore the economic feasibility of consolidating the East and West campuses into one high school building for all students." EDWARD J. NEUMANN, JR. Edward J. Neumann, Jr., a United Airlines pilot, is a candidate for re-election to the high school board for a third term. He has previously served for six years on that board, five of them as secretary. Neumann, who is single, has lived in the McHenry area for the past seven years. He is a former teacher, having taught school in Ohio, Michigan and Illinois. He is a graduate of the University of Toledo, Business Administration college. He also did post graduate work at that university in the School of Law. Neumann is a member of the Johnsburg Community club and serves as president of the McHenry Country Club Subdivision association, Inc. Major Problems "The continued inadequacy of our Vocational Education program which should be providing vocational, trade and technical education to the two-thirds of our students who acquire no additional schooling past the high school level." Ideas For Meeting Them "Continued steady improvements in this area of our program so that over a period of years, operating within the constraints of balanced, yearly operating budgets, we might have a Vocational Education program that provides to our students who seek it, a vocational skill or a marketable trade that will bette&enable them to take their place in society." HENRY F. NELL Henry F. Nell of 1710 N. Court street, McHenry, has filed to run for a board member on the high school board. He has served the past fifteen years as a member of the grade school board, six as president. Nell and his wife, Sue, are the parents of three daughters. Major Problems No comment. Ideas For Meeting Them No comment. COLLEGE CANDIDATES There is no competition for the three three-year terms on the board of trustees for McHenry County college. Incumbents, Herbert Lutter of Cary, Barbara Pautz of Crystal Lake and Leroy Schuppert of Crystal Lake, have all filed for reelection. Two candidates have applied for the one-year term on the board. They are Henry Marlowe of Huntley and David T. Murphy of Cary. However, through a misunderstanding of legal requirements regarding the Statement of Economic Interest, Marlowe's name will not be listed on the ballot. Marlowe had filed an Economic Interest statement with the county for the McHenry County Regional Planning commission, of which he is a member. He was of the opinion that it was not necessary to file such a statement for the County college board since one had already been filed with the county. However, attorney for the college board, William Carroll, informed Marlowe that it was necessary to file a statement for each position he serves on or was seeking to serve on. Marlowe has been a resident of Huntley for forty-fiVe years. He is married to the former Helen Harrison of Ringwood. They have five children, all of whom have attended college. He taught Vocational Agriculture in the Huntley schools for twenty years. At present, he serves as president of Marlowe Feed and Hatchery, Inc. and Marlowe Enterprises, Inc. He is also vice- president of the State Bank of Huntley. He served as a 4-H leader for twenty-five years and is one of the men who helped reorganize die McHenry County Fair. He served on the McHenry County Fair board for fourteen years and was president for four years. He was a former member of the McHenry County Board of School Trustees, serving for eighteen - years,. Presently, Marlowe is a member of the McHenry County Regional Planning commission, a member of the McHenry County Extension council and the University of Illinois Citizens committee. Marlowe says that in his opinion, the prime task of the McHenry Community college board of trustees is to provide education to all citizens of McHenry county. Basically his concept of a junior college is a trade school. "In order for a student to learn, he must be able to read. If we find that the student has not acquired the ability to read and comprehend, Quickie Fruits Dip banana chunks in lemon juice and roll in finely chopped nuts. Spear on toothpicks. Once he has acquired that ability, we can teach him the skills he will be using in his trade or profession," Marlowe said Murphy lives in Cary and is employed as an operations analyst for Kemper Insurance company, Long Grove. His background includes twenty years in banking and investment banking business. He said he has particular expertise in the municipal bond field. Murphy feels all of this experience should be of value as it relates to the board of trustees of McHenry County college. Murphy is an elected first vice-president and director of the Cary Lions club and is an active member of St. Mary's Episcopal church, Barrington Hills. His three teen-age children provide one of the reasons for his strong interest in MCC., Murphy believes in "quality education at a reasonable cost with maximum utilization of the tax dollar. The role of the junior college will become more important due to the ever rising educational costs which are becoming prohibitive for many families relative to private and public four-year universities. The curriculum at MCC should be aimed at providing the opportunity for employment for our citizens, both young and old. Maximum community use of the college building should be implemented."
