The coat of family travel jolted Mr. Day. an apartment developer, into launching the no-frills chain Now a multi million-dollar operation, it's a success story with a twist. The company annually donates 20 per cent of its after-taxes earnings to religious-oriented charites (not Baptist aloneK At the outset. Cecil Day obtained company agreement for the policy, citing the Biblical tradition of tithing (He and some other employees do the same with personal earnings.) 1 feel," says Mr. Day. who is also a deacon in his church in Atlanta, "that God is using me in an unique way " When he heard that customers take a third of the Gidefa Bibles placed in hotel rooms, he figured this into his plans As a result, Days Inns provides each room with a copy of the "Good News for Modem Man." an edition of the New Testament, marked "Take With You for Spiritual Uplift." In 1974, 200,000 visitors did just that. By I960, the total of Days inns and lodges is expected to swell from 240 to 1,000, including 100 in Canada Given the founder's deep sense of stewardship, those figures translate into a vast source of help, spiritual and material. Cecil Day is sure of the good will of most business men. He says of company tithing, "If we could get others to do the same, the potential would be tremendous " How about your stewardship - of a God given talent and its fruits? f \UI. J - I'L i. ••••. Extension Comments (By Getrge J Young. University of Illinois Extension Adviser, \ Agriculture. McHenn County* Kertilite Your Trees -- If your shade and flowering trees showed * short annual growth, sparse foliage, or light green and yellow leaves last summer, they may need nitrogen fertilizer And the time to apply that nitrogen is in early Spring when the buds begin to swell. Mid-summer fertilizing may stimulate new vegetative growth too late in the season and cause the tree to be unprepared * for winter Fertilizer should be applied in the feeder root area These roots are usually in the top foot or two of soil and extend just beyond the spread of the branches The fertilizer should be placed in holes about two feet apart Apply one to two pounds of fertilizer per inch of trur* diameter Although evergreen trees need less fertilizer, they usually benefit from an annual application of about one-third pound per foot at height T.B. Update - Approximately forty-five local herds had been checked as of Saturday.
