LEGION NEWS In May the American Legion auxiliary Unit 1169 of Wonder Lake will again this year offer red paper poppies to the public to remind our communities of not only the sacrifice of those who died, but the hope of those who lived. These poppies are the hopes of those hospitalized veterans who make them. Let us always remember that a poppy is not just a crepe paper flower, but a symbol of that sacrifice which made us free. Honor for the war dead, aid for the disabled, his family, his children and the widowed, these are the purpose of the poppy. The poppy program is the only one of our programs that is wholly concerned within the American Legion auxiliary organization that does not ask us to go outside the interests of the veteran and his family. This program is a special therapy and a means of employment to the disabled veterans in making the beautiful poppy. The work kefeps the hands and minds busy and helps the veterans to help themselves, giving them faith, courage and hope to continue. Lois Haak, poppy chair person, emphasizes the monies derived from the poppies are totally used for the rehabilitation program of veterans. The little "red flowers of remembrance" will be distributed on poppy day by volunteer workers of Unit 1169. Mrs. Lois Haak hopes that all will wear a poppy proudly. Please wear a poppy in 1976 to brighten your community; brighten the lives of veterans; bring smiles to those who make them; bring funds for rehabilitation and bring joy to those who offer them. Poppy day in Wonder Lake will be on Saturday, May 22. Lois Haak, Communications Chairman President Marge Hartung reminds all members of the unit that the regular monthly meeting has been changed to Thursday, May 13 at 8 p.m. Special guests for the evening will be the eleventh District president, Mrs. Jerreene Merritt, Elmhurst; eleventh District first vice president, Mrs. Carrie Petrie, Elburn; eleventh District secretary, Mrs. Pat Huxman, McHenry county council president; Mrs. Iolene Biangardi, Fox River Grove and her secretary, Mrs. Becky Gabel, Fox River Grove. IK* HENRY COUNTY Patrolman James Downing, center, is presented a certificate by Sheriff Arthur Tyrrell, right, on the successful completion of an Advanced Police firearms Training course. Patrolman Downing to range officer for the McHenry County Sheriffs Auxiliary Police, a volunteer group of trained people who assist in routine duties of the Sheriffs department. Shown on the left to Auxiliary Police Captain Dennis Malysiak. PHOT-LYLE KRAUSE Veal, Calf or Beef? The correct term is based upon the age of the dairy or beef animal from which the meat comes. Age also has a distinct influence on taste and tender ness characteristics of the meat --and its price. Veal is meat from milk-fed animals less than three months old, while calf is from animals past the veal stage, but younger than beef. Beef is the meat from animals usually marketed at 1 Vfe to 2 years. James Downing Completes Police Firearms Course Patrolman James Downing was congratulated by Sheriff Arthur Tyrrell and Auxiliary Police Captain Dennis Malysiak on the successful completion of an advanced police firearms training course. Downing is the range officer for the Sheriff's Auxiliary police, a volunteer group of trained individuals who assist the Sheriff with routine duties. The volunteers receive 150 hours of training by Sheriff department personnel. Downing, who is very proficient with his weapon, holds an N.R.A. (National Rifle Association) distinguished expert rating. Reaction by reflect without hesitation to dangerous situations can be gained by drill and legal advice. Designed to develop the confidence and ability of the individual officer, this course included in-depth instruction in the judicious use of technical skills and weaponry in addition to range exercises. A wide variety of techniques in police combat shooting was covered, both in discussion and actual practice. The methods of several police training facilities including the FBI, Chicago Police department, California Highway Patrol, in addition to the National Rifle association, the military and many privately operated schools were used to prepare this course of instruction. Besides physical skill with handgun and shotgun, there was an in-depth study of the legal and moral aspects of the use of weapons with special emphasis given to liability v Any person age 21 or over is eligible to apply for mem bership in the Auxiliary Police and reserve.
