PAGE 8 - PI 1DAY, MAY 14. i«l WMMWM mmi ' ' FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 6, 1926) Miss Harriet Bobb, who has been acting as assistant cashier at the Fox Valley State bank, resigned her position on May 1. Miss Viola Stilling, who was an employee of the Cary State bank for about a year, has accepted the offer of the place made vacant by Miss Bobb's resignation. The local community was shocked this morning by the news that Dr. Carl Strueh, owner of the sanitarium in Orchard Beach on the Fox River just north of McHenry, had died very suddenly. He was found on the ground in the garden. Dr. Strueh was 65 years old. He came to McHenry about twenty years ago. Walter J. Vogt, Jr., of West McHenry, has announced in^ tentions of running the "Rivera" ice cream parlor, located on Riverside drive, formerly operated by Fred Miller. , Kent and company have installed a new electric sign in front of their Riverside drive real estate office, which adds to the nightly appearance of that thoroughfare. Rev. Fr. Paul Bourke, a former pastor of St. Patrick's church in this city, dropped dead of a heart attack April 28. Rev. Bourke was born in Ireland in 1867. in 1906, ne was pastor of St. Patrick's, McHenry. and in 1909, went to Rochelle charge. Work is progressing rapidly on the new Justen block in West McHenry on the same ground where fire destroyed three business places. City pavements near com­ pletion. All unfinished gaps will be completed by the end of this week. FORTY YEARS AGO . (Taken from the files of May 7, 1936) Miss Mabel Knox, a teacher at the Holcomville school this year, will teach the Terra Cotta school next year. She will take the place of Mrs. Marie Bon- cosky. The "New Russ", the very latest type of soda fountain, has been installed in the Albert Krause store on Elm street, where arrangements are being made for a busy summer season. Mr. Krause sells Hydrox ice cream which nearly everyone has heard advertised so temptingly over the radio. Booths have also been in­ stalled. About 150 employees of the National Tea company in this district enjoyed their annual May party at the Fox pavilion, Sunday. A. Kredler is manager of the district. The committee on arrangements for the party was made up of Alby Krug, McHenry; Eleanor Kinsala, Fox Lake, and the managers from Crystal Lake and Woodstock. The Jensen family has moved from the Steinsdorfer house west of town to the Bobb studio, recently vacated by Andrew Worick. The girls of the glee club at the Community high school were delightfully entertained by their director, Miss O'Gara, at a party after school on Tuesday. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 17, 1951) The Choral club will present "Gypsy Caravan", a three act play, May 19 and 20. The crowning of the May queen will take place at St. Mary 's church Sunday evening. May 20. At that time the beautiful new statue of Our Lady of Fatima, donated by E H. Schuberth in memory of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry F. Schuberth, will be blessed. The May queen, who will crown the Virgin, is Mary Ellen Nye. Three local residents and one Chicago man were confined to the Woodstock hospital late Saturday night as the result of an auto accident which oc­ curred near the Skidmore estate at Pistakee Bay. The injured girls were Evelyn Hay, Lorraine Freund and Delores Michels. The third and final organization meeting of the Cub Scouts was held May 10 at the American Legion home. The new group organized recently is sponsored by the public school P.T.A. There are four dens in the organization, volunteer den mothers being Mrs. Thornton of Pistakee Lake; Mrs. Adams of Crystal Lake road; Mrs. Ed Frett of Country club subdivision and Mrs. Paul Baitrum of Emerald Park. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 12, 1966) Anthony Corcoran, ad­ ministrator, announced this week that the public's first look at McHenry's magnificent new hospital will be on Sunday afternoon. May 22. There will be open house that afternoon to show off the $112 million health care center. Little Jana Kim Darnell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Darnell, suffered a skull fracture last Thursday evening. She was watching >er brother in a Little League game on McCracken field when she was accidentally struck by a bat. She was transferred to Wesley Memorial hospital, Chicago, from McHenry hospital where she underwent surgery. Mr. and Mrs. Karl Steuben became parents of a daughter May 7 at McHenry hospital. Harold Palmer has been elected post commander of the AMVET Post No. 260, McHenry. Mr. Palmer suc­ ceeds Stanley Krueger, who efficiently served the post as corr.rr.nnder the past year. Plans are under way for the tenth annual McHenryCountry Art fair to be held June 17. 18 and 19 at the McHenry Junior high school, sponsored by the Woman's auxiliary to McHenry hospital. Mrs. Lee Gladstone will present the one-woman show. Co-chairmen of this year's event are Mrs. Richard Wilhelm and Mrs. Lee J. Cooney. Alan M. Meyer of the McHenry Kiwanis club presented an electric adding machine to William Bolger, president of the McHenry Puttie Library board, for the local library. The Kiwanians voted to present the gift. Featured On Pops Concert The annual "pops" concert will be presented by the music department of West campus high school Sunday night, May 16, at 8 p.m. in the West campus auditorium. This annual event is always popular among the community's concert-goers. The primary performers on WEST CAMPUS SWING CHOIR the pops concert are the stage band, and the chorus. A Bicentennial theme is employed. The swing choir will sing a medley of historical songs arranged by the director, John Leighty. A small admission will be charged to defray some awards expenses. The public is invited. ORGAN RECITAL St. Mary's Episcopal church, 210 McHenry avenue, Crystal Lake, has announced that William H. Murray has agreed Daily Luncheon Special!
