STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Owners Return To Find Two Homes Burglarized All reports indicate a most successful junior-senior prom for MCHS students last weekend. We recall not too many years ago when young people would have placed their tatoo on any plans that called for busing them to a prom location. The custom then was to work feverishly for a week in advance of prom night decorating the gym. Late arrivals sometimes spent a maximum of a couple of hours there, highlighted by the king and queen crowning, then took to the highway to drive to some distant point for more celebration. Many parents (Continued on page 17) When Keith Nelson of 5422 Woodland drive, McHenry, returned home from a three- week trip, he discovered his home had been burglarized. Richard Fisher of 3107 Park, Wonder Lake, arrived home from work Friday night to find his home had been entered. Taken from the premises were (Continued on page 17) In announcing graduation plans at the Consolidated District 15 board meeting Tuesday night, it was noted that ceremonies at both junior high schools will be held on a Friday night this year. In the future, the high school and junior high schools will alternate the use of the last day of school for graduation ceremonies. This year, the McHenrv Junior high school exercise will begin at 7 p.m. May 28, while the Parkland school program will be held at 8:30. The two junior high schools also will alternate the times of their ceremonies each year. Guest speaker for both occasions will be Miss Maurie Taylor, a former high school teacher in McHenry for many years. In an effort toward a curriculum improvement program at McHenry Junior high school, the administration recommended adoption of a Middle school approach.- To implement the program needs, the board approved the employment of one new certificated staff member ut Junior high and the release of four non-certificated teacher aides at the same school. Middle schools were explained as not junior high or elementary schools. They focus on skills, but in small segments and in an action-oriented setting. Grade levels include 5, 6, 7, 8 or any combination of them. It is described as "a school for students to grow up". In compliance with requirements of Title IX, the board appointed Jack Adams as Equal Opportunity compliance officer for the district. A committee also will be named to report findings to the board. Title IX is aimed at preventing discrimination. Board Member Gary Lockwood noted that the law is good in theory, "but a club is held over our head". The matter of extra duty stipends was givm consideration before approval. The recommended stipend for bus duty supervision was altered in order to recognize the greater amount of time expended during the morning period. The A.M. stipend was increased from $350 to $400 and the P.M. stipend reduced from $350 to $900. Another slgnificSht stipend increase was for athletic directors at both Junior high and Parkland schools. The increase from $300 to $750 for each of the two athletic directors is not only in consideration of the "enormous amounts of time" these sponsors expend, but also a new role description for the position. The role requires that the directors evaluate, direct and supervise all intramural and inter-school athletic programs. In another area of education, chorus directors at Parkland and Junior high will receive an increase from $250 to $400. Copies of letters sent to public and parochial school parents were distributed to members, explaining Summer School plans. With state funding in serious doubt, parents were informed that in order not to disappoint the more than 1,100 children expected to be enrolled again this year, a free 1976 summer program will be offered despite the potential burden to district funds. Without state aid, the cost to the district will be about $60,000. Future plans beyond 1976 are uncertain.
