Woodstock pitcher Al Church desperately awaits the throw as umpire Stan Block eyes the action. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) "EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR I In the last two weeks we saw three cars breeze through red lights (not green, not yellow -- red). In the same period of time two drivers amazed us by entering "DO NOT ENTER" drives. And two boys on bikes rode through an intersection without looking right or left. They were moving fast, too. Most of us could use driving lessons. In another city recently we stopped at a red light, then waited and waited. The mechanism must have been out of order. So our eyes gazed off to the right watching a store window,, blond or something, didn't notice the green come on. , Wow! the way that guy in back of us blasted his horn it woke us up for the rest of the day. As if our Sox didn't have enough troubles, along comes a line drive to knock Wilbur Wood out of the box for the rest of the season. The only good that can come out of that accident is that one or two young pitchers will get a lot of work and may come through. Hate to mention those pom* Cubs, but must admit it struck our funny bone when one announcer said, "The Cubs have been giving up two touchdowns a game this week." This column recently carried one kind word about those wonderful Cubs and it sent "Biff Meyer into orbit. "Biff", the artistic one, (or was that Esther's doing?) made up a sheet with our comments attached. Of course, he had some comments of his own. Also a newspaper heading where Owner Wrigley gave orders to buy some pitchers. Suppose he could float a loan. While we have had to limit pictures in the sports section, one came in this week from the Johnsburg P.T.O. that we wanted to use. Too bad. It had light streaks and our experts couldn't get a clear print from it. That's show business! Kathy Bolger Wins Class "A" Singles Kathy Bolger of 906 N. Allen avenue, McHenry, recently-* won the Class A Women's Singles tournament held at the Racket club, Crystal Lake. She came from behind in two matches to defeat her opponents. Kathy drew a bye the first 'round and played the following matches in the quarter, semi and final rounds: Mary Harwood of Cary, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1; Margaret Stinem of Woodstock, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 and Eleanor Hertrich of Woodstock, 6-2, 6-3. Chapel Hill Golf Gals P.A.R. By Lois Anderson Another coolish day was enjoyed by sixty-seven gals last Tuesday. By June when the remainder of the league starts the weather should be near perfect. We played for Low Gross, the winners were: Class A, a three- way tie, Dorothy Kreamcheck, Lee Nimsgren and Laura Schmitt with a 61. Class B also had a three-way tie with Chris Amore, Lorraine Freund and Jo Ready, a 61. In Class C only one winner, Marilyn Ehlen a 59. There were three chip-in approaches this week; Betty Gende and Dorothy Kreamcheck on No. 12 and Isable Stilling on No. 15. Most of the ladies signed up for a Blind Bogey event and those lucky winners were Lorraine Houda, who won a pair of golf shoes, Gladys Blair, an umbrella and Linda Seaborn, six golf balls. We were pleased with the response to the mini contest for the name of this columQ. Next Tuesday there will be a designated place for your entry. Some of the ideas already expressed were great, however, not correct, so you have until Tuesday to come up with the right one. Happy golfing YAMAHA "Someday, you'll own a Yamaha.' Men's 16" Softball By John Weyland The men's 16" softball league started its season off Monday night, May 10 at the VFW softball field with a game between Hettermann's and Sunnyside Inn. With rain threatening throughout the game. Hettermanns kept up the winning tradition by beating Sunnyside 10 to 2. Sunnyside got their 2 runs in the first inning from hits by John Pitzen, Tom Coskey and Don Prazak. Hettermanns got all the runs they needed in their half of the first inning by scoring 6 of their 10 runs. Wayne Hiller, Floyd Smith and Rick Wakistch picked up all the RBI's for the first inning. The second game on Monday night between Hautzinger Concrete and Fox Hole was rained out and was played Tuesday May 11. The first game Tuesday was between Hiller Construction and Teko's. Hiller Construction stayed ahead of Teko's to win the game 7 to 4. Bruce Miller who had two runs, two hits and 3 RBI's showed the fans the first home run of the year. Mike L.E. Good of Teko's had 3 hits for 3 at bats and 1 RBI. The second game was between Old Bridge and Coppermine. Old Bridge had no trouble hitting the ball and ended up winning by the 15 run rule in 5 innings. Coppermine had trouble hitting and hanging on to the ball. They collected only 3 hits and committed 3 errors. Al Stilling got 2 of the 3 hits Coppermine had. Everybody on Old Bridge wound up with at least 1 hit and most everybody had an RBI. The rained out game of the night before was played as the 3rd game on Tuesday night. Hautzinger Concrete and The Fox Hole (which was Apple Inn last year) battled it out to the end and Hautzinger ended up beating last years 2nd place team 7 to 6. Marty Conway provided the hitting for The Fox Hole by getting 2 hits and 3 RBI's, but it wasn't enough. Bill Funk and Tim Farr did the hitting for Hautzinger with Funk getting 4 hits and Fan- getting 3. Look for the next games on the schedule in this sports section and, see you there at the VFW. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Baseball Warriors Win District, Advance To Regional At Elgin By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Swanson's McHenry High baseball Warriors defeated Woodstock on Monday 8 to 1 to advance to the Elgin Regional on Saturday. The Warriors will play either Crystal Lake or Genoa Kingston in the opening game at 10:00 a.m. A big 4 run fourth inning paved the way for the Warrior victory in the district finals on Monday. Behind the 3 hit pitching of Lee Steinsdoerfer and the 4 hits of Joel "Leech" Wakitsch, the Warriors won in a breeze. "Steiny" struck out 7 and walked only three, all of these in the final inning as he held the Streaks at bay throughout the game. Christy, Ludwig and Jaskowiak each contributed 2 hits to the Warriors victory. It was a happy Coach Swanson and a group of Warriors who avenged a earlier defeat at the hands of the Streaks 4 to 2 at the conclusion of the final game. The win was the Warriors sixth in a row and leaves them with a season record of 11 wins and 9 defeafts. Tomorrow the Warriors travel to Dundee where they take on the Cards in a North Suburban league game. McHenry 385-1321 Open Mon. thru Sat. 9-6 lr SOFTBALL In the longest game so far this season Robin-Ladd went 13 innings before scoring the winning run. Joe Lafontaine legged out a three base hit and Ray Simon hit a deep sacrifice fly to right as Fireside Inn bowed out 10 to 9. Lafontaine's hit would not have been possible if Robino-Ladd center fielder Tom Roach had not come up with a great throw to home plate on an attempted advance from third after a Fireside Inn flyout. That was back in the tenth inning and it turned out to be a game saver. Robino-Ladd was led by Gary Snell and Joe Lafontaine who each hit safety three times. Snell batted in 5 runs on a triple and a homerun; Lafontaine added a double along with the game winning triple. Dick Dohetty had two hits with a double and an RBI, plus two runs scored. Fireside Inn 220 Robino Ladd : 102 120 200 000 - 9 002 400 001 -10 Fireside Inn had 20 hits in the ball game but during the critical Jinal five innings they could come up with only 3 team hits. Jeff Lehman had a triple, double and went 3 for 4. Jim Williams, Ted Juske and Bill Haak all had 3 hits each with Haak hitting a homerun. Mike Riley had 2 hits including a double. Rob Varese added 2 hits for the losers. McHenry Hospital was probably wishing last Wednesday's rainout vs. Cork and Cleaver could have gone a half inning longer .Leading 16 to 14 when the rain fell cancelled the game. This Monday Cork and Cleaver scored 5 runs in each of the first two innings and led 12 to 0 after 4 innings. Final score 16-3, Cork and Cleaver the winner. McHenry Hospital Cork and Cleaver 000 020 1 550 204 x - 16 WISDOM TEETH SHOULD BENEFIT EACH TIME YOU BITE OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW. Cork and Cleaver was led by Doug Freund who clouted 2 homeruns and a double good for 5 RBI's, going 3 for 4. Chuck Marke hit a two run homer in going 3 for 4 and Bill Cable added 3 hits. Mark Hansen, Guy Hansen and Jim Whitman all hit safely twice while Jerry Bellak had a solo homerun in the second inning. McHenry Hospital hit safely seven times contrasted with the winners 19 hits. Rich Hopper went 3 for 4 while Jim Mowry came off the bench to hit a two run homer in deep left plus a single in going a perfect two for two. Games May 19 include: Robino Ladd vs. McHenry Hospital. Cork and Cleaver vs. The Chalet. Fireside Inn vs. Old Bridge. Rusty Nail vs. House of David. Patrick Wirtz The boy who plans his course and completes his job is gettingto be a man.
