I*AGE 4 - PLAINDEA1.ER-FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 1976 Thoughts By MCC Vet Your Garden (by Chuck Gauer) Howard Miller, veterans' coordinator at McHenry County college, recently at tended a meeting of the Illinois Veterans congress^ This organization consists? of the veterans' advisors from all of Illinois colleges and univer sities, with the express purpose of bringing the veteran, the educational guidance and public representation he deserves. One of the more important topics of discussion, was legislation concerning the delimiting date for both federal and state educational assistance. The I.V.C. has gone on record as opposing the proposed ten-hear delimiting date. This proposal states ihul ten years is enough time tor any veteran to obtain a degree. While this may be true for a single vet, the I.V.C. maintains that this legislation does not take into consideration the vet who is working full-time and supporting a family. There are countless occupational and domestic barriers that the married vet has to overcome before he can pursue a college degree. Another very important issue was that of bad discharges. Recently it has become ap parent that many of the bad discharges given during the Vietnam era were either outright illegal or simply products of mismanagement by the military. In a move that confirms this argument, the federal government his instituted and financed a number of programs to 'assist the veteran in upgrading other than honorable discharges. "Project Verdict" is the branch of this program that affects those in northern Illinois. The main office of "Project Verdict" is the office of Veteran Affairs at the College of DuPage, in Glen Ellyn. Those in McHenry county needn't go that far because Howard Miller and his staff at MCC have been trained in the procedures involved in the upgrading of discharges. If there are any problems they cannot handle through their office, they are in direct con tact with "Project Verdict" or a state run organization called Veterans Service center. So if you or anyone you know are being denied V.A. benefits, educational assistance, or jobs because of a bad discharge, there may be a way to help. That's what the Office of Veterans Affairs at McHenry County college is for! To power its large body, the florida manatee or sea cow needs 60 to 100 pounds of food each day. These mammals eat water hyacinths and other plants, and can eat their way through a half-mile of weed- chocked waterway in a week. Flowers For Shady Areas Most annual flowers produce less color when grown in shade. Some species tolerate shade, but become tall and flower poorly. According to G.J. Young, University of Illinois Extension adviser in McHenry county, fibrous-rooted or wax begonia which does well in full sun, is also one of the best annual flowers for shady areas. The new F-l hybrids have exceptional vigor and bloom continually throughout the growing season. You can ex pect color right up until a killing frost in the fall, says Young. The plants are ex tremely tolerant of wind and rain. Unlike the petunia, which shows the effects of a rain storm for a few days, the new fibrous-rooted begonias will bounce back in a matter of hours. There is a good selection of varieties. Available are those that produce green or bronze foliage. Flower colors range from white through yellow- green to pink and deep red. Leaf and flower size also vary, some varieties producing large blooms and foliage and others with small flowers and leaves. Coleus is another good species for shaded as well as bright areas. This plant is known primarily for its foliage. Many new introductions in recent years have established it as one of the better plants for shaded areas, according to Young. The foliage is quite striking and can be used to add contrast to flower borders. ^ Impatiens, a shade loving garden flower also does well in hanging baskets and new selections have dwarf growth habits. The Elfin series has exceptional vigor, and plants reach a height of about 12 in ches. Growth is uniform, nad the plants are covered with flowers throughout the growing season. Vinca rosea produces some very colorful plants that have exceptional foliage even in shade. The leaves are a rich green and somewhat waxy. While the plant may pot ..produce as many flowers as other annuals, its combination of very colorful > blooms and rich, green foliage makes this a suitable addition to the flower border. Young says. Plants will bloom throughout the summer until a killing fall frost. A number of other annuals will tolerate some shade. Lobelia, with its bright-blue flowers, makes a good border. Snapdragon, calendula, ageratum, and pansy may also be grown in a partial shade condition. Shady garden areas take less watering, and weeds are usually less of a problem than in full sun. Don't ignore the shady parts of your garden. They can be a gardening asset. "New Lease' SCENIC...Visitors view the Grand Canyon from one of many viewpoints just a few steps from the Grand Lodge. Charlene Tonyan, R.N., left, one of the instructors, helps these four residents of the Community Living Facility operated by Pioneer center celebrate their graduation from a Nurse Aide training course. They are now qualified to serve as nurse aides. From left: Mrs. Tonyan, Nadine Frett, Kathy Smith, Janet Garlick and Diane O'Rear. (DON PEASLEY PHOTOGRAPHY) Few people will have as sweet a graduation as did four young people who received a "new lease" on life last week. This is graduation time for grade school, high school and college students. Yet one of the most poignant ceremonies took place at Woodstock last week at the Community Living facility operated by the Pioneer center. Four young people received their credentials as nurse aides, people who have been handicapped because they are mentally retarded. The four graduating in this program, taught by Charlene Tonyan, R.N., and Marge Van Breda, were Nadine Frett, Kathy Smith, Janet Garlick and Diane O'Rear. All are employed. "What made this program so heartwarming," says an en thusiastic Bob Lambourn, executive director, "is the response and complete following we received from so many organizations." When seven nursing homes were asked about the possibility of placing a trained nurse aide, every one agreed- and agreed further to assist with the training. Earlier, Mark LeFebre, director of Adult Services, and staff members decided they were going to find jobs for people at the Community Living facility- people who need help but can care for themselves and are trainable with encouragement and patience. \ Their studies showed a potential for jobs as nurse aides described by LeFevre after a study as the sixth largest employment category in McHenry county. High school education is not necessary for employment, and the turnover rate is significant. "Nursing home ad ministrators told us the k Lucille Angelo, left, is the only new officer elected at the annual meeting of the McHenry County Association for the Retarded. She is the secretary. Reelected were John Maselter, McHenry, vice president, center; and Mrs. Dixie Meyer, president, right. Ormel J. Prust of McHenry was reelected treasurer. (DON PEASLEY PHOTOGRAPHY) characteristics needed in a nurse aide, and we found these four people started on this program all qualified," LeFevre said. Among qualifications sought: ability to relate well with patients, and to be able to work despite confusion; be depen dable and reliable; and have the basic skills of the job. LeFevre and Lambourn soon found present facilities and programs would not provide the training so they built a program with the help of McHenry County CETA, McHenry County college and their own staff. The four participants had a month's internship with the help of the cooperating nursing homes and Lambourn noted the fact that the nursing homes helped plan the program and were active agents in the training. "They were excited about it succeeding because they were an integral part of it." What did the four young women think about the op portunity? Lambourn smiles as he recalls their first reaction. "They had mixed feelings - excited but fearful, too. But they also had bad memories of past school experiences, so it was a traumatic experience. "Fortunately, the instructors were sensitive to their feelings and a good relationship was established early in the six weeks of training." "I can see that these in dividuals have benefited by this training. Their feelings of responsibility, their self-worth and their maturity have all improved."'
