t PAGE I - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JUNE It, It?* EARL WALSH I Hear .SPORTS EDITOR J Has anybody ever been successful in putting a washer in a garden hose nozzle? Getting them in is not one of our greatest problems. It is turning the water on again and finding an entirely new pattern of spray coming out where it isn't supposed to be. Met Cathy Freund Sunday night after the Sox dropped a doubleheader to Cleveland, She wasn't happy. Cathy's husband, Walter J. Jr., didn't help. He's not a baseball fan like his wife or his father, the late Walt Sr. Our meeting with Cathy happened in Bimbo's where it seemed a flock of Cub fans had come out of the bushes. Their team had won four straight. We couldn't brag about our Sox and couldn't find a bush big enough to hide behind so went right down and faced the barrage of those happy Cub fans. Newcasts about the extra curricular goings on in Washington are getting sickening. Too many good men will be branded by the same iron used on the mavericks. Thursday noon of this week will find Bill Veeck at McHenry Rotary Club meeting in the American Legion Home. That should be the greatest event in McHenry since the first settlers layed claim to the territory. Everybody loves his or her own birthday. Seems the 200th birthday of our Country is also reaching the hearts of all. Patriotism bogged down for a while during undeclared wars, but the old American bounce- back is with us. Just looked back through a book where we write down reminders of things to do. Bumped into a memo that read "Take off snow tires." That we did. Need you be reminded that "Joe Frett Day" will be this week? It looks like baseball players have the owners over a barrel. Now it's: Play me or trade me. Pay me or trade me. Pay me or I'll play out my option. Yankee Doodle Dandy Of Sports Kicks Off A $5,000 scholarship and a trip to West Palm Beach, Florida, will be awarded to the winner of the "Yankee Doodlt Dandy of Sports" contest which kicks off this month. The contest, sponsored by the Athletic Institute, a not-for- profit organization promoting sports, physical education and recreation since 1934, is open to all boys and girls 18 and under. The Athletic Institute joins in celebrating the Bicentennial with a special salute to young Americans who participate in sports and recreation. Contestants simply must tell in 300 words or less about a special sports achievement and how that achievement helped them learn sportsmanship, and, in turn, made them a better citizen of the United States. 300 silver belt buckles will be awarded to finalists of the #« Vacation at the JmiiBNim W* OF 0RLAI\ID0, FLORIDA flHERE all roads LEAD TO VtMJ DISNEY VVQff/p © Walt Disney Productions X o***&• HILTON INN GATEWAY HIGHWAY 192 KISSIMMEE, FLA. 32741 305-846-4400 5 MINUTES TO DISNEY WORLD 360 ROOMS Each with 2 Double Beds and Color TV. McHenry Shamrocks Win Two In Shoreline League Tuesday, June 8 Old Bridge met Tekos with Old Bridge winning a close game 11 to 8. After 4 and a half innings Old Bridge was losing 8 to 7 with Tekos coming up with a 7 run top of the 5th. The McHeniy Area 12" Softball June 2 Highlights: House of David swept two games from the Chalet as a hitting attack second to none took the stuffing out of the losers in game one. The Chalet recovered enough to make game two more interesting but timely hitting again by the House pushed across 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th to insure the victory. House of David The Chalet 2 10 6 8 0-26 1 0 0 1 0 - 2 Everybody is aware that Hank Aaron is now the all-time home run leader. But what you may not know, Hank started out in softball and not baseball. The school Aaron went to as a boy didn't play baseball but they did play softball. Batting around in 3 suc cessive innings the House of David had 27 hits in 40 at bats in the 12-run rule shortened game. That is a .675 team batting average which is hard to beat in any league! Tom Les, Wayne Frantz and Dave Schaefer each had four hits, with 11 runs scored between them and 8 RBI's. Frantz hit one of the longest homeruns, a 3 run blast, while Schaefer had 3 doubles. Joe Dehn had a single, double and homerun in going 3 for 3, plus a walk, sacrifice, 3 runs and 4 RBI's. Gene Hester had 3 hits, 3 runs and 4 RBI's while Pete Merkle and Paul Rogers had 3 hits and 2 runs each. Merkle had 5 RBI's. Ron Miller added 2 hits and 2 runs. The Chalet's Don Harris doubled in Twig Miller in the first while Ray Franklin's double led to a run in the 4th inning. Keith Iceman's pinch hit single scored Franklin. The Chalet 5 2 3 0 0 1 0-11 House of David 3 0 3 5 0 3 x-14 In game two The Chalet scored 10 runs in first 3 innings and then cooled off except for a lone homerun by Twig Miller in the sixth. House of David outhit The Chalet 20 to 14 giving them 47 hits for the day! Wayne Frantz hit 4 for 4 with 3 runs including a 2-run homer and 3 RBI's. Greg Freund went 3 for 3 plus a sacrifice with 3 runs, a triple, homerun and 3 RBI's. Dave Schaefer went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's and Joe Dehn supplied a double, Homerun, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI's. Robino Ladd 0 141200-8 Cork & Cleaver 0 2 6 2 0 0 x-10 Standing after June 9: w 1 House of David 7 1 Cork and Cleaver 6 2 Rusty Nail 6 2 Old Bridge 4 4 The Chalet 3 5 Robino Ladd 3 5 Fireside Inn 2 5 McHenry Hospital 0 7 The biggest news this week is Robino Ladd's upset 7-4 over The House of David in game one of a doubleheader. The House rallied their forces to gain a split with a 13-5 win in game two. The Rusty Nail had the chance to move into a tie with the House as they whipped Cork and Cleaver 14-2 but fell in an extra innings second game 10-9. Both teams stay hot on the trail of first place House of David. Old Bridge won two big games versus The Chalet 18-9 and 14-2. For the winners it made 4 wins in a row while the slumping Chalet has now dropped 4 in succession. McHenry Hosptial lost game two of a doubleheader to Firesde Inn by a score of 9-2. However, the Hospital's defense is improving and their 1-0 lead after 3 innings shows much improvement over the beginning of the season. Game one is suspended after 4 innings with the score 9-1 in favor of Fireside. The game will be* completed before a single game scheduled on July 28 between the two teams. Doubleheaders this Wed nesday, June 16: House of David vs. Cork and Cleaver. Fireside Inn vs. The Chalet. Rusty Nail vs. McHenry Hospital. Robino Ladd vs. Old Bridge. This week's predictions see House of David taking two from Cork and Cleaver, but these could be a close game. Cork and Cleaver goes from hot to cold in the hitting department and this has cost them two games already. The House should be keyed up for this game as they always play better when they play against a first division team. The Chalet should rebound after 4 losses in a row and take two. Although the Fireside Inn has only a 2-5 record, pitcher Mike Reilly, 25 strikesouts so far this season, could make the difference. Also fielding, the Fireside's biggest nemesis, must be better to give the Inn a chance. But do not count the last place team to lay down and die this week; they are playing better ball these days. Robino Ladd was really up for last week's game versus the league leaders; the question is - will they be able to do it again this week versus an Old Bridge team which is finally putting it all together? Old Bridge is a tougher team than they were a year ago and after 3 close losses they have won 4 straight and pulled into fourth place. This doubleheader should be a tossup, but I will go with the Bridge. Pat Wirtz Did you know that softball got its start in Chicago in 1887?
