In this Bicentennial year, you can enjoy your vacation more if you make sure that everything • including your mail • is in good order back home. Postmaster Smith offers these tips to ease your mind about mail delivery: Ask the postman to deliver all your mail to a friend or neigh bor or ask them to empty your mailbox daily and to hold the mail until you return. Or you may prefer to ask the post office to hold your mail for any perid&jiup to thirty days; Toresume normal delivery, notify the post office promptly when you return home. This may be done when you come to the post office to pick up your mail; While traveling, post your mail early in the day, preferably in the morning. If you aren't near a post office, deposit mail in street collection boxes in business districts. These are serviced more often than those in outlying neigh borhoods; Buy enough stamps before leaving home to prevent run ning out when you are not near a post office. Stock up on Bicentennial issues to add a timely patriotic touch; Always use sufficient postage. Picture postcards not larger than the standard 4V< x 6 inches require a 9-cent stamp. Jumbo cards and letters weighing up to one ounce require a 13-cent stamp. Rates are 11 cents for each additional ounce. Undeliverable 9 cent post cards are not returned to the sender but are destroyed. Finally, Postmaster Smith suggests writing or typing the names, addresses and zip codes of friends and relatives and your own address and zip code on envelopes or labels before leaving home. Another suggestion is take the local telephone book and look up the addresses. This will save considerable time and help keep addressing legible and accurate. Extension Comments (By George J. Young, Extension Adviser, Agriculture, University of Illinois) Answers For Horticulture Question - Our newly trained Master Gardeners are going to help our office answer horticultural questions during our peak period of requests for horticultural information questions. These garden enthusiasts have received approximately forty hours of intensive instruction on horticulture problem solving from University of Illinois specilaists. They will be available to answer your questions on each Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, June through August. Visit them in the Extension office, 11909 McConnell road, Woodstock, or call them at 338-3737 or 4747 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 1 and 4:30 p.m. Agriculture Grads Return To Farm - One out of four University of Illinois Agriculture graduates are returning to the farm today. Back in 1965, this was only one out of nine. Agri-business opportunities are as good or better today as they were back in 1965, so you can't attribute this change to a drooping economy. Agriculture and farming are booming and continued world population increases and potential for U.S. food exports make the outlook attractive. Food production capability is our most important resource. Insect Activity - The larvae of European pine sawflies started feeding on McHenry County pine needles late last week. They are especially injurious to young pines, which may be killed by one defoliation. Suppression of this insect can be obtained by spraying the worms with either carbaryl, ma lathi on or diazinon, according to instructions on the label. Both the cottony maple scale and the terrapin scale insects are active on maple trees. Actively growing trees can tolerate a heavier insect population than weak trees. You may want to fertilize your maples to promote vigorous growth. Sprays are available to suppress the scales, but timing and insect population are important. The malathion should be sprayed after the crawlers have hatched and then repeated ten days lata*. When you spray, you also kill the twice stabbed lady beatle, which eats cottony maple scale crawlers. Production Cost • After making lots of assumptions, my current guess on average production cost in McHenry County for 1976 is $2.20-bushel for corn and $5.15-bushel for soybeans. I hope your operation is more efficient than the average. Our University of Illinois Farm Business Farm Management Service can help you with your enterprise records. Farm Appraisal Course - Eleven people have already indicated that they will enroll in Dr. Reiss's Farm Appraisal course that runs from Sept. 9 through Dec. 16 in Woodstock. You can audit it, take it for undergraduate credit or University of Illinois graduate credit. Call our office for details.
