\ Ringwood News 653-9008 653-9262 728-0295 England Trip Travelogue To Appear Weekly Ila Hogan of Ringwood, has recently returned from a trip to England and this column will carry the interesting news concerning the journey. Following is the first of a series of articles. On May 12, at 11:45 p.m. I left O'Hare for my second trip to England to visit my daughter, Mary Linn and her family. They have been stationed at RAF Mildenhall in the county of Suffolk, about eighty miles north of London, since January, 1973. Time changes make the flights interesting as we were served dinner at 1:30 a.m. and the sun began to come up at 2 a.m. We circled London about 7 a.m. and the view was like a yellow and green checkerboard with the red tiled roofs sprinkled here and there. The countryside is so lovely and green with lots of mustard fields scattered about. We landed at 7:15 a.m. Illinois time but it was 1:15 London time. I was surprised to see Earl waiting for me only to find out that Mary was just home from the hospital from surgery and was convalescing! Communications are not always the best in the family. I didn't appreciate the ride to Freckenham in Earl's MGBT - That little sports car is not for me. It was good to see the grandchildren although hard to believe how tall they have gotten and how they have changed. Randy will graduate from Lakenheath high school on June 6 and was busy with track meets and baseball. Sherri is a sophomore, class treasurer and National Honor society and a big help to her mother. Jeff is a ninth grader at Lakenheath Junior high school and also is playing baseball when he isn't at some girl's house! Scott is in seventh grade and also playing baseball and was tapped for National Junior Honor society while I was visiting. The family will be leaving England in late June or early July and as I arrived, they still weren't sure just where they were being sent. The family had grown quite a bit since I last" visited. Besides the ftrtir children, they had a chocolate poodle named Sam and a black cat named Nuisance. Within the last year and a half Mary has gotten very interested in the Tibetan lion dog, the Lasa Apso, and has a female named Dede and a male named Napi. To make it really hectic, Sam had five puppies the middle of April so there was quite a kennel club to greet me. The first evening in England was a nice reunion with dinner at home including English trifle for dessert. The next day we did some checking on the Moose con vention being held at Blackpool but after getting all the details, Mary's doctor wouldn't permit her to go, so I gave up any thought of tackling the British train system alone. Earl's schedule had i been rather hectic the entire time I was there, never having more than a day or two off in a ten or twelve day period. It was going to be difficult to count on Earl to drive and since Mary couldn't drive, I didn't expect to get around much this trip. However, we did manage a couple of short trips plus our later trip to Spain. I got to rest a lot and Mary had a nice (fckitimmlfpkn) RENT OUR RINSE N VAC-tha mw portafcls. my-to-wi hot water attraction carpot daaaiai machine t h a t f m r t f f . . . r watar and daaaiai sohrtion laooona and lifts all Art. vrtma sntf raaMwa to tfco CLEAN. ILL selection of historical novels so I got to do some reading which I usually don't have time to do at home. On Saturday Earl drove us to the two bases nearby where we shopped in the gift shops, commissary and ended the day by the entire family going to the Officer's club for steak night. Sunday morning at five Earl had to go on a three day alert tour (one of his regularly scheduled things) and Scott was going into the hospital for Monday morning surgery on his ears so we had to rely on a neighbor to drive us that day. After admitting Scott which took two to three hours, we went home for a rest and then after an early supper we went back to visit Scott. Again, I got to do quite a bit of reading and got a lot of rest which felt really good. Monday, May 17, we checked on some tours to the Continent, visited Scott at the hospital and made a couple of stops at the shops in Mildenhall village. One stop was at the Iron mongers which is the hardware store! Tuesday we again visited the hospital, had lunch at the Lakenheath Officer's club and did a little bit of shopping. Earl got down from flying and off alert and took us to Newmarket (the famous horseracing town) to Onassi's, a Greek restaurant for dinner. I had Afilia - a pork in sauce over rice dish that I enjoyed very much" On Wednesday we did some housework in the morning and in the afternoon I rested and read while Mary went to a recognition punch party for her work as Parliamentarian of the Officer's Wive's club. Thursday Mary had her last obligation to the Wive's club and that was to conduct their election at their end of the year luncheon. After the luncheon Mary and I went to watch Jeff and Scott's ball game at Lakenheath (Scott with bandaged ears just out of the hospital could only watch!) That evening Earl and Mary were recognized at a special dinner by the base chapel for their work in the Protestant program. On Friday we did a little shopping and went for lunch at the Red Lion inn at Icklinham. We had "bar snacks" light lunches that are served in formally in the lounge. I had Shepherd's pie and salad. The inn was a thatched roofed cottage built in the mid- 1800 s with dark timbered ceilings and huge fireplaces. The exterior was the Suffolk "pink" with dark brown tim bers. I am still not sure why there are so many pink houses in the county of Suffolk. On Saturday, Earl was free and we went to London for the day. We shopped a little in the Piccadilly and Haymarket area and then had lunch at the Regency hotel. We went to the Matinee Queen's theatre for a new modern play "Otherwise Engaged" by Simon Gray. The play was good but the language and nudity was a little shocking. We left one theater and headed down the street to the Criterion theatre for the final performance of the thriller, "Gaslight" which Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer filmed years ago. I really en- ioyed this play more. It was a long day and I was glad to get back to the car but I did get to see Piccadilly in its color both day and night. MORE TO COME WEDDING Friday, the eleventh of June, was a beautiful day weather- wise and a beautiful day for the wedding of Resae Ackerman and Charles Robinett, both with the U.S. Navy of Milton, Fl.
