SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Day camp activities are available, five two-week periods from 9:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Camping while living at home, for seven through twelve year old girls and boys, are now available at the Lake Region YMCA. New periods begin on June 28, July 12, July 26, August 9 and August 23. The first game of softball was played in 1887 at the Farragut Boat Club in Chicago. The first ball was a boxing glove and the first bat was an old broom. It was great fun for a large group of Rotarians and guests to hear Bill Veeck last Thur sday. The smiling Irishman, Bob O'Neill, brought Veeck to our midst as he has brought other celebrities in the world of sorts. Some wondered how come Bill Veeck could spare time from his busy schedule to come out to the boondocks. Maybe Bill is a little smarter than other big wheels. He wants people to come to his ball park. Veeck was full of stories about his years in baseball and was the kind of speaker you could listen to for another hour without getting tired -- unless you got tired from laughing. Veeck is just one helluva guy. A regular fellow -- and to meet him is to like him. He made friends in McHenry. Would you believe? Clyde Blackwell is 86 years young. You would never believe it to see him stride down the street. He wants a picture of me riding my pony. Wonder what he has up his sleeve? Riding through the country we get the idea that a lot of corn will be knee high the Fourth of July. 'Twas a beautiful day Saturday for 150 golfers to tee off at Chapel Hill Country Club. It was the 4th Annual Joe Frett Day. A year ago it was raining pitchforks in McHenry while the Joe Frett friends had clear clear skies. Lloyd Freund said it best when he decided that "Uncle Joe" was watching down from above and wouldn't let it rain to spoil the day. With Marie Oeffling at the helm, those Community Club gals served us one darn fine meal in the evening. Harry Caray says you can't beat fun at the old ball park. Could add you can't beat sitting down to a home cooked meal. Harry May stepped to the microphone and showed how to get a program rolling. crowd in the park Thursday night to enjoy a big time band in a small community. Bob Freund has assembled a group of outstanding musicians. He also had a vocalist named Dave Walsh entertain last week. Dave is not a relative of the local Walsh clan where vocalizing has never been a claim to fame. Guess we liked him because we could understand the words he tossed into the mike. It is wonderful to hear Happy Father's Day once a year. King for a day! The Queen takes command again tomorrow. Baseball is a game designed for diamonds, not courts. SUDDEN THOUGHTS - How come a shoe lace always breaks when you are in a big hurry? WOMEN'S SOFTBALL LEAGUE By Katie Gende The Women's Softball League is going into its fifth game of the season. We have two new teams this year which have added more competition to the League. One of these teams, Brake Parts, is un defeated with 4 games under their belts. Last week's games included Hennegan's Pub beating Pistakee Ladies Golf League Ethel Broderick was the super star who showed the Thursday Ladies League how the game should be played. She birdied that long monster no. 9 to card a 46 low gross. Those 14 putts helped, but it was just beautiful playing by a beautiful gal. Our Pres. Bernice Dolce and Yvonne Matt tied with Ethel to win the days event of low putts. Yvonne is happy that her game is so much improved. Even though she is so busy overseeing the restoring of the barn on beautiful Cresent Bay, she is playing more, which helps. The more you play the better you score. Ask Pat Barber! Libby Johnson was on the putting green canning them in like duck soup. Her Doc. says to wait a few weeks before playing a round, but she's out there practicing. Helps your tan too. Not me though. I'm staying away for a few days. Over golfed and peeling. Two teams in Grafton, Iowa played that non stop game in 1974. Wayne's Creamy Cone in the last inning 6-5. Old Bridge made a valiant effort to try to beat Brake Parts, but lost 25-4. Ed's Rental, after being tied with the House of David in the second inning, went on to beat them 25-10. The women would appreciate more fans rooting for their teams. This will have close co-operation and active assistance of Duke Haven and the Illinois Conservation Commission, the Garcia Corporation of Teaneck, New Jersey. Garcia is the world's largest fishing tackle company. Garcia will bring some of their famous line of fishing tackle and lures. Textbook for the fishing portion of the seminar will be "How to Catch Fish in Fresh Water" and "Fishing Tackle and Techniques". The Instruction of Gun Safety and Hunting will be personal; targets and game birds will be plentiful. We will teach gun care and storage, range and field safety, and shooting skills of shotguns. We'll have actual shooting with the shotgun at targets and, finally, a real bird hunt over well-trained bird dogs. Sid Ellis, a Certified Hunters Safety Instructor for the State of Illinois/will help with Hunter Safety instruction Those successfully completing the SEMINAR will receive graduation certificates. Illinois law requires a completion of a Hunter-Education Course beforetheywill issue a first-time license. This shooting, hunting, and fishing SEMINAR will team up -"partners"; one experienced sportsman and one who is still learning. Most experienced partners will have as much enjoyment as their novices. Anyone is invited to bring a wife, son, daughter, grandson, nephew, or any deserving teenager for this weekend of fun and learning in the out doors. The minimum age for youngsters going on the upland bird hunt should be 12 years old - but we can accept younger children in the hunter safety, target shooting and fishing portions of the SEMINAR. It is not necessary to be a member of Duke Haven Game Club. This expert instruction in the use of sporting arms and fishing tackle will add im mensely to the success and pleasure of a hunting or fishing trip. It can effectively bridge the "generation gap" and teach you to share as a "team" the camaraderie - and deep natural understanding of target shooting and busting clay birds, tramping ?the hunting fields together and behind a good bird A Vega GT driven by Ralph DeFreece of LR8CC speeds for turn number one in the Sports Car Club of America "Blackhawk Challenge" last Sunday. NEW OPEN COMPETITION RACING SUPER MOMREDS * SPORTSMAN There were no practices or parade laps, and many drivers including the LRSCC team, walked the track prior to the driver's meeting, checking for rough areas and pylon locations. v Many drivers found three seconds added to their times as they displaced a pylon during their lap around the course. Others recorded a Did Not Finish (DNF) when they missed a maneuver or put three or more wheels off the course. Corner number six found many drivers collecting DNF's as they sped into that turn only to discover a tight group of pylons with no time to prepare their maneuver. The first set of pylons prior to corner number one cause many DNF's and a few spin-outs as the drivers found themselves at too quick a pace with little time to correct their speed. The team results will not be tallied for a week, though the results for LRSCC found Paul Musschoot with a fast time of 2:10.4 in a Corvette, followed by Ralph DeFreece with 2:24.5 in a Vega GT, Wayne Gaylord with 2:24.8 in a Triump Spitfire, Steve Smith with 2:25.9 in a Monza and Terry Gabel with 2:28.2 in a Datsun 280Z.
