The better equipped your outdoor dining area, the less work it takes to entertain under the stars. There are some very basic basics, such as an outdoor charcoal or gas grill and a weatherproof dining table and chairs. After this come the con veniences, some not very expensive if you are handy. Ad<i<-d louche* Nice pluses are an out door electric socket for plugging in electric cook- ware and warming trays; an awning or patio um brella over the table; good-looking hurricane lamps to light the whole area or electric post lamps; an outdoor bar, stationary or on wheels; and a rolling serving cart to handle dishes, glasses, condiments, etc. all in one trip. Ultimate luxuries would be an outdoor sink and portable refrigerator. Do-it-yourficlf An outdoor bar can be, inexpensive to put togeth er. Two planks nailed to sawhorses or to orange crates on wheels serve very well. Clover with a pretty plastic cloth. At cocktail hour assem ble a big pitcher of water with an extra capped Jar under the bar, and a large < insulated picnic carry-all to hold plenty of ice. In addition, a less er-proof aperitif like Cam pari, and a dry white wine or Vermouth rounds out the selection nicely. Mix the perfect match Mixers can be limited to club soda, ginger ale, tonic and orangejuice, the lat ter both for the vodka and, surprisingly, th* Campari. "Campari arid orange" has become popular from New York to Kansas City to San Diego, probably be cause it's a taste-good, lively highball without any high-proof kick. A jigger of Campari to 4 oz. of orange juice over ice does it nicely, and puts you in the up-to-the-minute cate gory as a bartender. Don't bring your fine crystal outdoors. Invest in supermarket-sold old-fash- ioneds and tulip-shape wine glasses; these two will handle any sort of libation you're serving. Special hint: substitute lime and orange peel for the cliche lemon peel. An other nice new touch. Plant a windowshade For a refreshing change from standard Venetian blinds, shade your window with plants. This effect is especially nice for summertime as it adds a cooling touch of green to the room. You can suspend the plants at varying heights from the top of the win dow. Or you might want to build shelves and ar range the plants in stag gered rows up and down the window. (If the win dow is paned, there are special small plant shelves you can purchase to achieve this effect). Make sure the plants you use can withstand di- rect sunlight! - SNACKS FOR TRACKS No matter what your mode of travel, it's a good idea to keep a snack with you.
