STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD for your child s safety There is no more enjoyable way for a youngster to cool off during the hot summer months than by taking a re freshing dip in the water. However, swimming fun can easily turn into disaster if children are not taught water safety rules, cautions Dr. Albert H. Domm, child safety specialist and former medical director of the Prudential Insurance Co. "Indeed," says Dr. Domm, "the best life preservers can be parents w h o a r e concerned enough to make sure their chil dren know and observe the basic f undamen- tals of water Dr. Albert safety." H. Domm With that in mind, he gives the follow ing seven tips for a safer summer: 1. Beginners should swim near the shallow end of the pool. 2. Swimmers should -have adequate supervision in the water 3. Children should be taught to respect water, not fear it; fear leads to panic, respect dictates caution. 4. Don't swim around or underneath the diving board. 5. Look before diving, be alert for shallow water and obstacles. 6. Avoid horse-play. 7. Walk, don't run, around the pool. • * * * The truth hurts people who don't like to face facts. Ring wood Activity Includes Visitors And Wisconsin Trips Linda Billikas arrived in Ringwood last Wednesday afternoon to spend an evening with the girls. Guess Evelyn Zvonar, Ida Mae Adams, Linda Billikas and Sue Thornton really had a session. Linda spent the night at her mom's and when she went home on Thursday, niece Donna Erwin went with her. Sunday, Sue Erwin, Eddie and Marcy traveled to Dubuque, Io., to pick up Donna Lynn. On Sunday last, Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Brennan, and Wayne and Wendy, visited grandpa and grandma Brennan and great-grandma Hepburn and later in the afternoon, aunt Nellie and Art Jenson visited with Alma Brushabor and the Matt Schied's. A mini-vacation was enjoyed by Olivia Bauer, Dorothy Bauer, Georgia and Jennifer Bauer, Fran Schmitt (Georgia's mom) and Delores (Lor) Brennan and Linda at the Dells last week. We heard that they enjoyed the pool as long as they didn't get wet. How do you do that? The best way to beat the heat was iced tea and air- conditioning. TO THE PEOPLE OF RINGWOOD A very upset lady called one of the reporters and asked if the people of Ringwood knew where their children were and what they were doing. Inasmuch as we still have a railway and people still ride it and have been leaving their cars at the station, there has been quite a bit of vandalism on autos. The lady who called has had to have a windshield and two side windows- replaced becHuse of rocks and bricks. The brick was used to get a bat and ball. < Also clay or mud had been pressed into the locks. Because commuters never know what condition they are going to find their cars in when they return home, they do not like to leave them at the station. So please, correct children now before it gets out TORKELSON LINCOLN-MERCURY Summer $avings! -4 W 1976 MERCURY MARQUIS 2 Dr. H.T., V-8, auto., P.S., P.B., fact;air, steel belted whitewall tires, full Wheelcov- MQ7k ers, stock no. 76-251. * V 1976 MERCURY COUGAR XR7 k 2 Dr. H.T., V-8, auto., P.S., P.B., twin lounge seats, landau vinyl roof, steel belt- - _ _ -- ed whitewalls, full wheel covers, stock no. With retail beef prices at their lowest levels iji months, consumers should be seeing remarkable buying . op portunities at their meat counters, according to the National Live Stock and Meat board. Beef prices at the store have fallen 20 cents per lb., and more compared to last year, says the Meat board. The 20 cents per lb., figure is quoted by Meat Board President David H. Stroud as an average based on national statistics and the drop in price will vary for each particular beef cut and in different cities and stores. But some of the normally higher priced cuts have been cut even mote as retailers have tried to give consumers the benefit of dramatically lower cattle prices, Stroud said. "Most people consider beef an excellent buy in terms of nutritional quality and eating PORTRAYS LINCOLN Richard Blake, who has portrayed Abraham Lincoln in more than 1,700 perforamnces, will present his popular one- man show, "A Look at Lin coln", at the Illinois State Fair. Blake will perform on the Illinois theater stage Aug. 15 at 11:30 a.m., Aug. 16 and 17 at 1:15 p.m. and Aug. 18-22 at 7 p.m. He will also appear on the Heritage Square stage Aug. 16 at 7:30 p.m., Aug. 17 at 5 p.m., Aug. 18 at 11 a.m. and Aug. 19 at 3 p.m. All shows will be free. Each show will be presented in two parts. The first act will feature Lincoln as he enters politics, including the Lincoln- Douglas Debates and Lincoln's election as president. The second act will show Lincoln during his presidential years. Blake studied. Lincoln history for two years before portraying the famous statesman. He has appeared on several national programs, including NBC's Today show in a Bicentennial salute to Illinois and the PBS television special "The Selling of Abe Lincoln-1976." Blake is exactly the same height as Lincoln and bears a strong resemblance to him. A native of Davenport, Iowa, Blake now lives in Springfield satisfaction," Stroud said, "but for the next several weeks, shoppers will find more beef at lower prices than we anticipate for the rest of the year." Meat industry sources said several factors have caused the beef price decline. In some regions of the country con tinued drought is forcing far mers and ranchers to market more animals. And feedlot placements also were much higher as cattlemen last Spring anticipated cheaper feed and a strong market. ^ But, the Meat board pointed out, total beef production has jumped by 11 percent over last year - an increase sufficient to upset normal supply-demand economics and movement of cattle to beef. "Unfortunately," said Stroud, "this good news for consumers, coming in the form of mid-summer bargains in beef, presents an extended red ink situation for the cattle in dustry. Current cattle prices received by farmers and feeders are well below costs of production. "We encourage consumer buying at this time in order to insure a reasonably priced beef supply over the next couple of years," Stroud said. "If the severe economic strictures go on much longer, it could drive too many of the people who are producing beef out of business," he noted.
