The Alumni, made up of graduated cross country runners from McHenry high school, defeated their op ponents by a score of 24-32. The hilly course was run around a lake just off Bay View road, in Pistakee. John Mclnerney of the alumni won the race in the blazing time of 14:10. Andy Oakley, who was mysteriously pushed into six feet of water early in the race, recovered in time to take second place for the Alumni. Mike Burman of the high school team came in third. Other runners placing well for the Alumni were Jerry Pepping (sixth), Kevin "Oscar" Wynveen (seventh), Tim Tonyan (eight) and Tim Wilt (tenth). Rounding out the scoring for the high school team were Kevin Weisenburger (fourth), Greg Schaeffer (fifth), Dan Schaeffer (ninth), Don Dona van (eleventh) and fresh man Randy Fergen (twelfth). McHenry high . school's assistant Cross Country Coach Earl Kyle seemed to be im pressed with his^team's results. "They're really improving a great deal," he commented. "We should have a tough team this season." Last year the McHenry cross country team brought home the coveted North Suburban Conference championship trophy. However, this year the team will be missing runners like Most Valuable Runner and co-captain Andy Oakley, Co- captain Ron Himpelman, Greg O'Halleran, Jerry Pepping, Steve Thorns and Terry Reilly. The loss of these all-conference runners will be somewhat of a let-down for this year's cross country team. Freund, Inc. But with hard workers like Vince Linnane and natural runners like Mike Burman, the 1976 cross country season may become McHenry's best year ever. "These guys are good," said Head Cross Country Coach William Hutchinson. 'But they've got to want to work. Each team member has to constantly run all summer if he wants to get anywhere. "I think most of the guys have been training this sum- rper. If they have, we'll be the team to beat in the conference. "The key to cross country is dedication. Without dedication, without constant training, a team is lost." Coaches Hutchinson and Kyle are all set for another suc cessful season. However, the entire year depends on each cross country individual. As Coach Hutchinson put it: "They've got to want it."
